I was fortunate enough to watch Larry Bird's entire career. Highlights don't do him justice. He wasn't the best in any single stat (probably because he was too busy being a TEAM player), but I'd argue that he was the best all-around basketball player of all time.

Bird did EVERYTHING great. Scored, averaged double digit rebounds, steals, passing…everything. The most complete player ever. Don’t confuse athletic with being great. Bird did all this at a time when you could mug someone and not get a foul called. In todays soft ass NBA Bird would AVERAGE 40. He swept Jordan in the playoffs….twice. SWEPT him. The great coach Pat Riley said….if I need one shot to win the game I am picking Jordan…if I need one shot to save my LIFE, I am picking Bird. Game….set….match

You do have valid points, but it is what it is. I will say this, back in that era was nothing but greatness, all around......today's league is a lot softer. Here is a tidbit for you. MJ and Bird was putting numbers on people when hand checking was allowed. Today, MJ would get 60 and Bird would easily have 45 plus with a career triple double average.

Michael was in the league for 7 of Larry's playing years, but the only time Michael advanced farther in the playoffs than Larry did was in Larry's last two years, when Larry's back was so jacked up that he had to lie down on the floor in front of the bench when he was subbed out, instead of sitting on the bench with the rest of the team.
And in the first of those two last years, 1991 - the first year the Bulls won the title - the Celtics and Bulls met in a key late-regular-season matchup. At that moment, the Celtics were just 1.5 games behind the Bulls for best record in the East, and the Celtics won the game 135-132 with jacked-up Larry dropping 32/15/8/3/1 to bring the Celtics within half game of the conference-leading Bulls with 9 games to go in the season.
But by the time the ECSF rolled around, both the Celtics and defending champion Pistons had been wrecked by injuries, leaving the Bulls path to the finals wide open. And on top of that, the Pistons and Celtics faced each other in the ECSF, so the Bulls only had to beat one of them to take the ECF. So if one or two injury scenarios happen differently, it could easily have been a scene where the eventual-champion Bulls meet a healthier Celtics in the playoffs - and the Celtics did match up WAY better against the Bulls than the Pistons did that year - especially since the Celts still had Reggie Lewis, who was probably the toughest 1v1 matchup Michael ever faced. With a little luck, maybe Michael ends his career with 5 rings and Larry ends his with 4.

But keep in mind that game Larry had 36 pts, 12 rebounds, 8 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 40% from three point land, 6/7 free throws. The last key factor in Bird being the GOAT, was because he (and Magic Johnson) saved the NBA. Before they entered the league playoff games were being shown on tape delay after the late news. The NBA was dying. Ratings were terrible, there were serious drug issues with some players, and attendance was falling. There would probably be no NBA without those two individuals and what they brought to the game. Case in point, I worked a an auto manufacturing plant 1990-2005 and one of the guys I met there had played 6 years in the NBA in the 70s prior to Bird/Magic and his top salary was $30,000/year. Larry Legend once had 41 points, and was one steal away from a quadruple double at the end of the third quarter. He then pulled himself out of the game because the Celtics were ahead by more than 20 points. Someone asked him why he didn’t go back in just to get his last steal, to which he replied, “I can get a quadruple double whenever I want to, we were way ahead and no need of me going back in.”
John Stockton tells a story from his rookie year, when Larry walked by the Jazz bench right before the game started and told them (the entire Jazz team) that he felt good tonight and he’d get 43.” Stockton goes on to explain that Larry hit 43 points in the beginning of the 4th quarter and then took himself out of the game, just so he’d the end the game with 43 points, like he said he would.
A lot of the videos show the pre-fight face off with Bird and Dr. J, but what they don’t explain is how Larry got Dr. J pissed off enough to go fists to cuffs. From the start of the game Larry started repeating two numbers to Dr. J, the number of points Bird had and the number of pints Dr. J had. By the third quarter those numbers were 42 (Bird) and 6. It was at that point Danny Ainge says Bird told Dr. J he should retire. 3 minutes later Mose Malone and Charles Barkley were holding Bird’s arms while Dr. J was punching him.

"I don't know if we can go back to the fuzzy look."
It wasn't nearly as fuzzy back then. Unlike modern digital storage, the analog films and tapes they used back then degrade slowly over time.
So with a DVD, you put it in a box for ten years and then pull it out and play it, it's still the same. But if you do the same with a VHS, you'll probably be able to see a difference. And if you play the VHS every week for ten years instead of just storing it, then it will be even worse.
The CRT TV's in the 80's were capable of around modern 720dpi, which is pretty darn decent. But the broadcast signals were usually only like 240 or 360 dpi. Not quite as good as modern hi res of course, but still definitely watchable - and way better than a 40 year old VHS looks today.

The 1986 Celtics were deep and talented. They would have beaten Jordan's dynasty era Bulls hands down! Pippen and Jordan would have gotten their points but we would have killed them in the post. Not one person on the Bulls front could could have guarded Bird, McHale, Parish or Walton.

Hi Fellas... the one problem with you "giving it up to Mike over Larry Bird and Magic" is that Larry Bird routinely cooked Michael in his first couple of years. Michael Jordan himself (you can find the video on CZcams) has said the best day of his career was the day Larry Bird retired. He just gave Michael too much trouble. I think if you really look into it, you will find that early on Michael was no match for Larry.

Like the reactions you guys have from GREAT players of yesteryear. While I have Michael Jordan as the GOAT, it should almost be criminal to NOT have Larry Bird in any Top-10 Greatest NBA Players list. Because when you look at the ALL-AROUND game of a player in the NBA (clutch shooter, FT shooter, great rebounder, great passer, very ambidextrous, instantly made teammates better, tremendous hand-eye coordination, and, yes, arguably the greatest trash-talker), I don't know if any player better embodied all those traits like Bird did. Hell, Bird even made the All-NBA Second Defensive Team 3 times!
Speaking of Jordan and Bird, the only team Jordan never beat in the playoffs (when Bird played) was the Boston Celtics. The Celtics always had the Bulls' number when they met in the playoffs, but in defense of Jordan, A) those Bird-led teams were GREAT; B) Jordan didn't yet start his championship run when that happened, because for Jordan's first 6 seasons, he and the Bulls were routinely beaten in the playoffs by the Celtics and/or the Pistons.

Not saying Bird was the goat, that will always be MJ to me! But this is how I measure a goat:
    1. Does things you’ve never seen
    2. Does the fundamentals with ease
    3. Has their own style, which is recognizable
    4. Is clutch is important situations
    5. Praised by their peers
    6. Toughness, plays hurt, sick, etc

Individually, Jordan was a better player. But Bird was a better TEAM player. He knew how to utilize all the tools in the toolbox whereas Jordan was an amazing athlete and relied solely on his own talents. Jordan got better as a team player as his career progressed, but that is the reason Jordan and the Bulls could not beat Larry and the Celtics. Larry was an outstanding teammate - Jordan was an outstanding player.
