Most of us associate waves with peaceful beach scenes. In fact, many people use the sound of waves to help them go to sleep every night. But sometimes these seemingly innocuous waves grow in stature and become truly dangerous. Today we’re looking at ten massive waves caught on camera.

My first time surfing at north shore Hawaii I found my self in a storm stuck in a current unable to move forward only struggle to stay in the same spot I could feel a downward yet backward pulling pressure on my lower body as I struggled I turn to look behind me to see a wave towering over me in such a fashion I felt like an ant about to be crushed by a boot absolutely terrified I grip onto the surf board assessing my fate and accepting I may die as I am not a strong swimmer and I was in an area populated by many rocks as the wave came down I could feel an eerie dark shadow of coldness over power me then a sudden crushing weight and downward pressure all I could see was blackness and felt my self going down in a vacuum being sucked down yet I could feel the cold water settling as I went further. As the water calmed I slowly felt like I was losing my self as I’d been under the water for many minutes now I slowly floated up weak from the fear when suddenly I began rising at a high rate of speed and finally surfaced I was so exhausted and beaten down I knew i only survived that wave to die not being able to swim. When I finally gained my bearings I realized a man was on the beach with a four wheeler yelling to me it took a moment to actually understand what he was saying and he was yelling SHARK all I could yell was HELP I was mostly on the board absolutely terrified at this point and I watched the most brave person I’ve ever met run straight into the water that he just scolded me to get out of to come save me this man swam straight through the current to my rescue and pulled me in to the shore the entire time I was clinging on to the thought of never going into the ocean again

Yea, sorry but I've seen waves I think were bigger. When I was stationed on the USS Kitty Hawk, I've seen waves crest the flight deck around the horn of Cape Good. Whole stationed on the USS Nitro, we hit a wave that actually pushed the ship backwards, not to mention numerous times waves swallowed the bow right up. Last, when I was stationed on the USS Moinester, I remember the ship getting completely swallowed up by a wave. We just popped back up like a cork. And that was more common than people realize.

I was in the Navy and stationed in Misawa, Japan in 1980. I was Navy cop and we had a special hotline for "Tsunami" warnings, sometimes we would have earthquake tremors and the phone would start ringing and when I answered it, there was a Japanese man screaming on the other end....."Tsunami, Tsunami x15". Although I don't recall a tidal wave during my time, we certainly had our share of earthquake tremors. Misawa isn't far from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant and I'm sure when the Tsunami struck that area, the Navy was activated to help with the local population and rescue. Crazy times.

Yeah but no but yeah, the northesea isn’t always like that. Most of the times in summer you can cross with a fairly flat sea. But we must agree: some vikings have died there

Just fyi the tsunamis you see in movies is nothing like in real life, in fact you won't see a wave at all just a rapid rise of tide.

You could see it as a wave like the movies depending on the specific case. Some areas in Japan during 2011 came as giant waves, like the 60+ ft recorded behind a bridge from someone that didn't even realize it was a tsunami at first until it was close enough to see moving because it was so tall it looked like the ocean out in the horizon.
