How to fix Steam Deck battery drain and calibration issues

- In this video I show off how to resolve the bug with the steam deck where the battery drains really fast or the battery percentage no longer reports properly. The main takeaways from this video are:
1. Your steam deck must be drained to the point where plugging it in no longer powers it on.
2. You may have to attempt this multiple times before success. If you turn your deck back on and the battery health has not changed, you must try this again.
3. I forgot to mention this but use the standard steam deck charger that comes with it.
If the deck will not stay off no matter what, boot up the deck, shut it down, then boot it once more and see if the battery life shows the proper amount. - Hry

worked very well :D went from 17% to 98% now. also game time went up so much now. went from 35 minutes-45minutes to 2-5hours of gaming depending on the title. thanks alot bro you deserve the likes and subs. you got mine that is for sure.

OK, I got it to not power up when the cable is plugged in but the charging LED just blinks 3 times slowly, skips 2 blinks, repeats. Is this what it should be doing?
Mine is at 26%, I've tried a similar fix without results. The key difference that you pointed out was that the steam deck didn't turn on after plug in it in once the battery is fully drained. I'm gonna try it again tomorrow with your directions. 🤞🏼
It worked! Battery is back to 100% capacity.
@@rowdyroddoes this mean keep the option on or off like for example when i plug in my cable it does not turn on which i think is good since it can then charged 😅

@@rowdyrod i did it got mine back up 2 91% i wanted to see if it was going correctly next time i let the battery run out again and do it again and let it for even more hours haha also i heard theres a new fix if you unplug your battery from the deck keep it out for a few mins and plug it back in aparently it fixes it but im not sure

I’ve been using my deck for a month and a half and after it saying 5% battery health, im now at 100% battery health with the maximum capacity now very slightly more than design capacity lol

i tried to put windows 11 on my steam deck and the battery started to drain really badly so i put steam OS back on my deck and it told me my battery life was 15% when i contacted steam to send it in to fix it they told me it would be $183 so i figured id just deal with it then i found this video and holy shit it worked thanks dude my battery life is back to 97% and its showing the correct battery life
My desk top mode don’t even come on screen

Does it matter if the light blink when it charging? I did got it when when the screen doesn't turn on.
I tried to do this but it was insuccesful... When I let my battery charging for 8 hours it only displays the LED on for around an hour, and then turns off. I waited the 8 hours and the battery was only charged to 70%... And when I turned on again the battery health dropped down from 43% to 40% :( It's a fresh new Steam Deck... When you did this guys, the LED was on for a long time? And when you turned on the battery was at 100%? Please help :(
Having this issue currently my deck keeps saying it's charging when it isn't going to try this and see what happens
When you say the screen turns on do you mean it turns on when you press the power button and quickly unplug it or do you mean it literally turns itself on for a moment as soon as you plug it in like a Nintendo switch?
This needs to be turned into a drinking game every time he says "basically" take a shot, guaranteed drunk 5 mins and 3 seconds.

Once you get a steam deck, first thing to do is drain that sunovabattery until it dies then charge to full and you get 100% battery health.
Once you get a SD throw it in the fxcking bin 😂😂. Joking, but it does push me to that point.

My SteamDeck always was in 14% of Battery, with this methond finally shows full battery life. One question, I need to do this every time that battery runs out? Thanks a lot.

I can’t seem to prevent it from booting whenever the power cable is connected.
It's worked!! but if the software crashes , you might need to do it again, I hope they can fix this problem.
Yeah, luckily I think valve has fixed this for the most part.

Hi i wonder why my steam deck keep turn on after i plug it in. Already drain the batry with bios mode many time, but still it turn on after i plug in the charger.

Hey so I’m having a similar issue, but I am unable to drain my battery. I’ve tried to go to bios and leave on,but it turns off once unplugged. Also the battery is 100% battery life. Not sure if there another way to drain. Please help if able

I think you can also put it in battery storage mode which does the same thing but is a lot faster
Hi. I just tried this method. I successfully drained the battery while on bios. But everytime i plugged in the charger. It keeps on turning up.
It may take a while but eventually it won’t turn on when you plug it in
Hi my steam deck don’t show the battery icon on the up right corner . And it still don’t show up when I enable it on the steam settings .
2. And my steam deck keep run on storage mode it’s stuck . Don’t start when I press power bottom but it start when I put in the charging cable and then I can take out the cable
Did you make sure storage mode was disabled in the bios? Not sure why else that would be happening.
I bought a near perfect steam deck. However, im having issues with the battery life not holding a charge. I've had it plugged in overnight ... i drained it until the screen wouldn't turn on anymore. Then I left it alone. When i turned it back on, it was only charged at 15% after being on charge all night.
In my case. I have a couple of months with my SteamDeck and yesterday I left it charging overnight downloading games. When I wake up the battery was showing 0% while charging. And it was having an issue that even showing 99% it shut down after a few seconds. I dont know if its the battery. But I restarted the device quite a few times and now it doesn't shut down but the battery drains so quickly. It says 99% and says 0h 24mins. And the number falls so quick. Lost 20% in 5 minutes. So I guess it's a bug in the deck. You think this method can fix it?

Did you try this method asgard? I'm having the exact same issue as you. You would think valve would make the battery replacement easier and not one of the most difficult parts to replace.
I got mine a few days ago, I was testing its performance with different games for a while. When it reached 60% battery approximately suddenly shut down mentioning that the battery was drained, I plugged it in and observed that it was at almost 5% battery charge, I played a video game for 2 minutes and suddenly it reaches 90% for no reason lol, I was playing until it reached almost 50% and the same thing happened.
Idk if this method could work, but I’ll give it a try
Every time I plug the charger in the screen keeps turning on. I pull the plug and it dies almost immediately. What am I doing wrong
I’m having the same issue here. It keeps turning on whenever the power cable is connected.
I’ve already done this and it happened again. It’s happened both time while I was in desktop mode. Drains from 100% down to 3% and stops. I can play it for a while and then it dies. Tried this method twice with no official fix. Does the battery need to be calibrated multiple times? I do leave it charging a lot. But rarely do I use desktop mode which seems to be when it happens.
Try calibrating it multiple times. If issues persist, it could be a faulty battery.
Or you could Unscrew the back. Pop the battery connector out, leave it out for a min then back in. That's worked for me. I know some may not feel confident to do that.

Hey I had a different problem where I fully charged the steam deck then I completely turned it off and put it back in the case then woke up to it completely depleted and hot in the case?

yeah im having the same issues im on windows the battery last longer when its on the bios but when i go on windows it dies within 5 mins im going to try this.
I just got mine and I can turn it off and 100% and when I go to turn it in a day or two later the battery is completely drained and dead. I have no clue what is going on or why it’s happening. This is a brand new system that I just bought and have played less than 5 hours on. Any help is much appreciated.

i got mine brand new, it was 93% of battery health, i did this and now it shows 99% im very glad. thank you. if it was supposed to go up to 100% let me know but im happy now

I have this issue where my deck charges to 99% full according to it 🙄 and than I shut off completely turn it back on a day later and it’s 93 %
I tried it but mine turns on every time I plug it in even when it’s so dead it can’t make it to the bios 🤦🏻♂️

I did the procedure twice, the first time my battery was at 84%, close to completely discharging I went to desktop mode and the battery health was at 88%, when I completed the procedure and recharged for 6 hours the battery health was by 81%.
I did the procedure again, and close to discharging in desktop mode it was at 88%, I completed the procedure and still left it charging for more than 8 hours, when I went to check the battery health it was at 83%.
Are these numbers real? Should I do the procedure again or is it not good to risk it for a while, as zeroing out the battery like this is a bit dangerous, right?

@@Emuland69 It will be? I still get about 2h and 40 minutes of battery life playing Red Dead 2 (with tdp 9 and some changes to the graphics like textures on high, the rest on medium, low and other little things on high, with fsr quality.)
Mine keeps turning back on.. I’ve restarted it 10 times now.

@@Emuland69 finally got it! I guess it worked a while ago. I just found out that downloading games also makes it thinks it’s dying. So I have to download while charging..

ITS BEEN FIXED important things are make sure after you drain in bios you can also sit at desktop to drain the last 5%
Now I'm doing a fresh Steam OS and going from a 256 oem to 512 991a samsung 2230
I have this problem for the first time last night playing CP2077. It was fully charged and lasted about 15 minutes.
This morning it was fully charged and I left this morning with its bios left on.
Came home and now it's charging and I turned ot on for the first time. It's says 80% and lasts over 2 hours instead of this morning 100% and only 0 minutes remaining.
Haven't played anything yet because it's still charging but a good sign so far.
Hopefully they fix this issue lol so dumb but hey I guess that's expected for first gen shit
Yeah that’s what we get for being on the bleeding edge of tech. I’m sure they will address it in a software patch.
Hey, for the guys who swapped out their SSDs at one point, your problem might be super easy to fix!
If you've unplugged your battery and swapped your SSD, you probably didn't plug your battery back in properly. Take a quick look and see if it's loose!

I bought a steam deck in awesome shape but it says 5% battery health & at 100% charge it says 13 minutes, with vampire survivors it drains super fast & shuts off, like 15 minutes, it charges to 100% fast to though, I’m going to try this

@@tessedik95 yes!!! It took 3 tries but fixed it, the right bumper was broken on the 1 I bought so I have to remap to trigger, but the battery part worked like a charm

Yup, I keep playing at 3%. It's a software issue, this fixes it but it returns.
It hasn’t returned for me yet but we will see what happens

Now it happend again. Letting it bleed dry worked once. It charged to 100%, and set itself back to less than 50%. The deck did this a few times.
But then still reports just about 5,44wh max when charged :/. (13% health)
So im bleeding it again :/. Hope i dont have to do this regulary.
No matter how many times I drain the battery in BIOS MODE, the Steam Deck automatically keeps turning on whenever I connect the charger.
How can I stop it from doing that?

@@zeusserch98 Surprisingly no. Just played a game until it drained the battery. Then I connected the charger and it didn't turn the device on.
So I just left it charging overnight and it sorted out the battery problem.

My Steam deck is fine but 90% is "100%" now. Thats the highest it will go for me.
