Short Stool Build

  • For my first ever woodworking video I've decided to build a short, squatty strong stool out of pine. I start with a rough cut 2"x7" board and chop wood away until stool parts come out. Then I put them all together with glue.
    It has compound angled legs, tenons into the seat top, and half lap joints on the legs.
    Since I've been getting questions about what I did with the mistake, I thought I'd put a little blurb in the comments here. I definitely should've mentioned something in the video, but I didn't. I just left the mistake there. I don't think it compromises the strength or integrity of the stool. Also it's shop furniture and isn't meant to be terribly beautiful or perfect. That's the fun part about shop projects!
    Equipment used to make this video:
    Canon HF-G30 video camera
    PowerDirector 15 Ulitmate software

    What’s nice is to come across this a few years later, enjoy your style, your build, your dog dance and your outcome. Yes, like the guy who asked you for the measurements…..I would like you to make it easy for me too so I don’t have to think…..but where is the fun and challenge in that-haha. I hope that after five years, the stool and dog are still with ‘us’.

    *Nice stool you have! And the tools are worthy of respect. I, too, sometimes make woodwork and stools in particular ;-)*

    Hi Ethan
    Wow.
    So, I appreciated your calm approach, you owning your limitations and moving forward anyway, the quality of the final project, and your leaving the slight imperfections there for all the world to see - the world being your kin. What you leave says as much about who you are as what you change. I really like what you did. Whoever uses it will also, for the next 100 years or so anyway. And - THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR NOT USING SOME FUNKY TECKNO MUZAK TRACK in your video!!!!!! I cannot count the number of videos that I close as soon as the muzak track comes on. As an old timey blacksmith told my mother as he sipped her best effort coffee - Dorthy, when I want coffee I want coffee and when I want water, I want it clean. Thanks for the coffee....thanks for the clean water...

    Nice project Ethan and a good video. Shame the joints didn't all work out for you. I like how you don't use screws etc, it's how I like to work too. Also like how you don't use a fancy machine for every single step like so many 'woodworkers' on youtube seem to do, nice to see some hand tools for a change

    The jig u use to push the wood through the table saw should be patented ... the safety level to protect fingers is innovative

    • @EthanFrei
      @EthanFrei  Před 4 lety

      No, sorry. If you want to make it you'll have to intuit the sizes and lengths. Really it should be pretty guessable, but I recommend using a little creativity and giving it a go! Just don't mess up like I did!
