l fell in love with Devorah Voigt operatically speaking when l first saw her in ROSSINI's BIcentennial Gala where she sang the SABBATH MATER.Truth be told l consider she has one of the most beautiful faces l have ever seen.
Well, you can listen to Anne Schwanewilms in leading roles in Vienna Staatsoper (not mentionable), Scala di Milano (somewhere in Old Europe), Semperoper Dresden with Thielemann (what's that?), she is actually doing "Frau ohne Schatten" in Metropolitain Opera (a little opera in an unknown country), and yes, she is an uncomparable Lieder-Singer, which is, in my humble oppinion, the highest art form. I am addicted to her singing, which is always full of all musical possibilities.
"replaced by a less celebrated singer", well, it was Anne Schwanewilms, who is singing Strauss-Roles all over the world, Scala, Vienna, London, one of the best opera singer ever. Fantastic Lieder-singer also.
the smartest man I went out with was a Metis and he said his grandmother (Kukum) told him never to ask a woman's age or weight, she was a very wise woman
A lot of opera singers are either big and or tall and have very broad shoulders and huge bustlines. That is part of the reason they are able to sing that loud and that long . joan sutherland has a huge jaw and she is also big and tall . In some ways they are lucky to be built this way !
One thing can be said in favor of her losing weight, she will be healthier and her chances of landing roles will increase. I can't wait to see her as Brunhilde in May. Maybe we will all grudgingly thank Convent Garden in the future for this, so Deborah can continue singing far longer than she would have been able to if she had kept on her weight. It's best to look at the bright side of things.
"Callas only really hit the headlines after she lost all that weight and looked like a model." And what happened to Callas? She lost the weight too quickly and didn't give herself any time off to adjust her breathing to her new body. Her voice was never quite the same and it fell apart within a few years after that. Voigt should have learned from Callas, but she didn't. She lost a huge amount of weight too quickly and like Callas, the voice was never the same.
@Brahmsfourth An "aria" is a "song". People don't need to feel demeaned because they don't know the difference. If opera is ever going to rise out of its aging club we have to be more welcoming of any who show interest, even if they come into the discussion obliquely. People taste, see, feel differently from one another, but it's hard for me not to pity the person whose breathing has never stopped with the hearing a beautiful rendition of even one of these great old operatic songs.
it is a shame for the theater! Pavarotti and some other great singers of the past were large and imagine we would not have them! Opera is about the voice and not weight. If anyone wants to go see skinny ladies they have a choice of club, musical, drama theater, etc. What happened to directors? Don't they learn on Callase's weight loss that also affected her voice? How many examples they need and when these directors will differentiate operatic genre from others? When???? We want voices not body!
she has a point, most conductors and directors have this limited view about what the opera is supposed to be like. it really doesn't allow for much creativity in interpreting the role. PS: she's also right about size, many large voiced singers (self included) are thin too. just look at edda moser or franco corelli. sure size does matter as far as health, but the opera houses decision was quite unprofessional.
I love deborah! Who cares if she heavy! What pigs to feel woman have to fit a stero type of skinny, blonde,& beautiful! I LOVE YOU DEBROAH thick or thin! You're still beautiful especially your voice! I watched my friend die with anorexia,,,,,don't let them do this too you!!!!!!!!!!
@Shanniquitie Don't blame gay men for this - they are not of one opinion; neither have they all made their names in fashion. Without the consumers, even designers would alter their vision.
Well there is a double standard with regard to weight. Did anybody fire Pavarotti because he continued to gain weight through out his career. The south African tenor Johann Botha was grossly overweight but managed to secure engagements until his health gave out and he died. If Voight hat undergone bariatric surgery earlier I thing she would have spared herself the embarssment of the "little black dress" incident. The soprano who replaced Voight is a major singer in Europe; I doubt is she was aware of the "ruckess" that ROH created.
Opera is a multi-disciplined art form. It is drama and singing and set design and lighting and all these components come together to make this wonderful work. If Violetta is dying of consumption and she looks like a sherman tank, it just doesn't hold up! Every joke about opera boils down to fat singers. It is about time it became real. Callas only really hit the headlines after she lost all that weight and looked like a mdoel.
shallow minded trend in society where image is more important than real talent. Image sells more I guess. But image alone is devoid of essence. Void culture
well, sorry to say, but losing weight has changed her voice.... I listened to her in roh, was not as good :( and then her tosca was cancelled due to voice illness.
She was fabulous then. Now she lost the weight and sounds like crap. Long live the fat soprano. A fat soprano is a healthy soprano. Bring back Montserrat, Jesseye, and Alessandra Marc!
Referring to Anne Schwanewilms as "less celebrated singer" was a kind euphemism. She is NOT famous, although well-known as a Recitalist in some circles like the UK, specializing as it were in "Strauss roles"-nobody gives a shit about that! What Covent Garden did to Voight was unconscionable. And this is coming from a slim fan of hers!

They wouldn’t dream of doing this! Anyway, I am lucky to have seen her in Ariadne at the ROH in the end. And she was great!

Excellent point!
The experts say that her voice has not changed significantly since the weight loss, so whoever posted the previous message is incorrect.
3:15 They say, 'In order to be able to sing well, I need to eat a lot’
Ms. Voigt did the right thing by having the operation--not for her art--but her health.
Ms. Voigt is one cool costumer--she keeps things in balance.
Director made decision. Roll over...

What are the blanked-out words that Sawyer reads?
I looked up the singer who replaced her, Anne Schwanewilms. She actually is very, very good. I'm surprised I don't recognize her.
Deborah Voigt is my step aunt!
what happened to the sound at 3:18?

@clkallay thank you~!

Why was the sound cut?

There is no such thing as too heavy for Isolde, or any Wagnerian heroine.

Fucking opera directors! God, give me an army!!
She is now quite slender.

Nicht -Liebestoud- sondern -Liebestood-. Learn the German please.
She is really big. I would NEVER pay to see her!
