Good job my friend! Looks like a good maul and after three years of use it appears to be holding up good.

Great! I picked up a maul last week and it's been a great upgrade to the wedge and sledge technique I was using..

Mate take a look at 6:20 at the bottom wood how the dirty absorbs all the power of your hit. It works 100% like a shock absorber so the half power of your hit on the upper wood its absorbed on the ground. That happens because there are too many tiny woods on the dirt and leafs. Choose to place the lower wood on a harder surface or clean all the dirt under the bottom wood and even more press the dirt hard with something heavy so to be dense , so the most power of your hit transfers to the wood you spliting not to the ground.

Definitely the best maul out there. Ive tried most of the designs and while crude looking, these work the best and can handle the most abuse.

Looks like you’re splitting wood close to 20” than the normal 16”. I bought the bigger version of this maul from Ochsenkopf. Yet to try it, it will be getting some action real soon. Great video👍

The next step is not a splitter, but a sledge hammer and a few wedges to deal with the tough stuff.

try a x27 fiskars and see what you think, that is what i split with. that chunk late in the video if you flip that on the other end it splits far easier, i also dont use a chopping block as one guy mentioned it takes away the best part of your swing. i almost always split everything in the woods the same day i cut it.

Thanks! I definitely wanna try out the Fiskars. A lot of people seem to like them! & yes, that is definitely good advice. Tried it out and worked much better!

Does anyone know what the small hook is for on the bottom of the mauls cutting edge? What purpose does that serve?

Hey young man, kind of like your stuff, your gumption and you seem humble too in not getting insulted with advice. And I can't keep giving it as I see this stuff taking off in video's of claims of best axe/maul/saws as i assure I can beat about all on utube with Stihl saws and hand splitting. Can tell you how I had a plot of tops at age 22' and with a saw/maul, beater 70 F250 and a helper. I was easily cutting/splitting and delivering 4 cords a day. Then in a few years I met a guy who could sell wood all year long and he couldn't find anyone to produce like me. We daily did 8 cords a day skidded cut split and delivered. Good sites with close would we could do 12-16 cords a day. I just clued one guy in on splitting as no one thinks the solid steel mauls are any good nut it is just a serious technique to use them. You don't swing them. I'm dying to do some vids. but I'm healing a broken neck for the next 4 mnths.. So if your serious let me know and I'll tell you all you need on those saws. Especially with a maul that is a crushing force don't buy the ground taking away from splitting as you could stand a bunch around you and just keep cracking them. By having them that high on a log ( If needed only use one about 4inches high that you can cut out of a nice y or knotty piece so it doesn't break) your losing the most important part of the swing that has a fuller momentum but more importantly is a flick of both wrist you do when swinging down lower and right after your hands meet in a slide of upper one to lower hand. It has the effect of a karate snap that helps sail it through anything on the first shot. Also when up high the whole blade of the maul hits the log at once vs. on lower down swing the front corner of the maul blade enters first to help blow into it. Then all knots go down and to the right or left, Stand the y's up and left or right then treat them as separate pieces and shave a good half off each one. Then flip it over and smash it in half. Let me know if how serious you are and I'll tell you more. Set and run those saws right, you should be able to cut a cord every 20 minutes/tank of gas if its a log pile. Wouldn't of spoke up if I didn't see something in your vids. and self.

Appreciate all the advice! Definitely would love to know more on the saw aspect. You covered everything in terms of the splitting aspect! All seems very logical and makes sense.
Hoping for a speedy recovery for you. Would love to see some videos of you splitting. Seems like you have it down to a science.

Well your respectful reply got my sub. to your channel. One of my motives is there is a rise on utube of Older masters putting out skills few would ever share in business competition years ago. Seems there was like a 2 decade lapse of younger guys taking on the trades of hard, rewarding work like home framers, loggers, firewood cutters, tree climbers. Being down and watching them I'm realizing I really got some knowledge young in this and was in just the right places to hook up with many Masters in all those trades. I'm 56 and stepped into the Pocono's in 79' to a family Bar business at the building boom of the Pocono's. I was only 15' and few knew that from my beard and big farming arms and by 16' my first vehicle was a firewood truck. We all started somewhere and I'm liking a lot I see in you and your content. A major thing is your respect and wanting learn more, that stuff got me everywhere. But the saws ? I don't want that public until I could do some vids. as you would be shocked how fast you could cut with a really setup saw. You cannot know until you see it is possible and to many of the bigger guys on here would be jumping on it once they see it. Also you rightly don't mind but I wouldn't want to keep writing these for hopefully your utube rise that others would take it wrong. So don't want to give the super saw knowledge on here but I would share it all with yourself some other way. Since I also want to get into vids. there would be many ways to get it to you. If you could do a trip down to Pa. I assure I could blow your mind with stihl saws, teach you everything on them in 3hrs. that would surely take you in a week up to one of the fastest cutters on utube. I got some bad pic's of me comparing the then new electronic ignition 066 vs. my old faithful 064 but I have one in each hand racing each other. My setup 064 smoked the 066. So I'll give you that one in public, keep your eye out for the older no electronic's saws. Also you should get habit of never cutting without chaps. I ride my Harley no lid, swung bad saws like a madman but safely. The deal is though one touch of that chain to your leg ? It is going to take out a path of meat and muscle that cannot be stitched. It would be a brutal, crippling injury and not a simple bad cut. And if your getting into firewood that is killer money now you surely want to master hand splitting and what I explained about knots/y's is called reading the log. You need that knowledge with a splitter to get the most out of it. I plan to also put out some old man challenges from the trades and I'll give you one to start practicing. I could do it with the 16lb. sledge or solid steel maul. It could start a trend. Spin your maul backwards, grab bottom of the handle, flip it up in the air and with full arm extension you tip your head back and with only your wrist you need bring it down, touch your nose then bring it backup. The deal is if your wrist gives out, you'll break your nose unless your super quick. i was really impressed with your axe swinging in competition. Wish you much success as this work is for few but it brings great health, free workouts and just badarse stuff. Like your nature the baddest ones are kind, humble and respectful as they don't need prove their manhood. Keep that nature it will get you far. Let me know if you would like to make contact off of here to jump years ahead, maybe a lifetime on cutting.
