- Goals from Sergi Canos and Christian Norgaard consigned Arsenal to an opening-night Premier League defeat at newly-promoted Brentford on Friday.
Roared on by a raucous crowd, the hosts took the lead when Canos fired home at the near post midway through the first half.
Kieran Tierney and Granit Xhaka went close to equalising for the Gunners, but Norgaard made sure of victory for Thomas Frank’s side when he headed home from close range with 17 minutes to play.
A fixture at Brentford Community Stadium - at capacity for the first time - on the first day of the season was always going to be a stiff test for Mikel Arteta’s side, whose task was made tougher before kick-off, with Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang unwell and not available for selection.
Folarin Balogun started as a result, spearheading an attack also featuring Nicolas Pepe and recent Olympic gold medalist, Gabriel Martinelli. Ben White and Sambi Lokonga were handed Arsenal debuts, with fellow new arrival, Nuno Tavares, on the bench.
This was Brentford’s first top-flight match in 74 years, with their buoyant fans understandably bouncing at kick-off. Arsenal immediately set about asserting their authority on proceedings though, winning a corner inside the first minute, before Kieran Tierney stung the palms of David Raya.
Arteta’s side dominated possession in the early stages, but Brentford carried a threat on the counter - a point emphasised when Bryan Mbeumo combined nicely with strike partner, Ivan Toney, before flashing a shot against the outside of the post.
Midway through the half, Brentford came forward again. And this time, they scored. After Ethan Pinnock had found him in the left channel, Canos took a touch inside before firing a fierce shot in at the near post.
It almost got worse for Arsenal soon after but, after beating White, the lively Mbeumo dragged his shot wide.
In truth, the Gunners struggled to craft a clear-cut opportunity during the opening 45 minutes, though they could have been awarded a penalty on the half-hour, when Balogun was caught by Rico Henry after the defender’s momentum had seen him collide with the forward after initially making contact with the ball.
Arsenal, led by the impressive Emile Smith Rowe, began the second half with renewed impetus, and could have been level five minutes after the restart, when our No 10 received the ball on the half turn before advancing at goal and seeing his shot palmed away by Raya.
Bukayo Saka, on for Balogun just before the hour mark, almost made an instant impact, instigating a counter-attack which finished with Tierney’s shot deflected just off target. From the resulting corner, Martinelli’s header floated agonisingly across goal and away to safety. Then, soon after, Granit Xhaka’s powerful shot flew just over the bar.
But then, out of nowhere, Brentford extended their lead when Arsenal failed to clear Pinnock’s long throw, allowing Norgaard to profit - the midfielder powering home a header from close range.
Arsenal kept going, and almost pulled one back when Raya brilliantly denied Pepe - but there was to be no grandstand finish.

The defense was absurd. Then look at the stats, 65% possession, 22 shots 14 off which were of target, 5 corners, and still no goal. I just don't see the conviction/determination. They all drag each other down with a lack of confidence. Still, there will be matches that you think oh looks good and a small good run of 3-4 matches, then reality hits again and you have an abysmal performance starting a bad run. Upcoming 2 matches we will lose, anything else is a positive. You just never really know what Arsenal you will see playing. It's been like that for far too long.

We bought Chambers in 2014, the same summer we bought Alexis Sanchez... In the last 7 years, someone thought it was a good idea to give him a new contract when he's terrible. Someone renewed Holding's contract. Someone renewed Elneny’s contract. Someone in the club wants to renew Xhaka's contract. Someone signed Willian, Cedric, Mari who are all below average. HOW can a club like Arsenal constantly be sanctioning deals for these dreadful players, again and again like this? I know some of them try their best but these are players who wouldn’t even start in teams fighting in the relegation zone... The people running the club haven't got a clue man...

He doesn't have any ideas on what to do... He doesn't try any new formations, attacking moves or defensive strategies... Ask yourself, why do Arsenal players magically get better once they leave or become trash once they join? (Cazorla and Monreal were literally about to retire when we had them but suddenly they got back into international squads once they left 🤔🤨)
The defiant ones are the only ones who succeed in our club ala Alexis Sanchez, Jack Wilshire, Auba, Ozil, RVP, Coquelin, Gabriel Paulista and Koscielny...
Sure they seem poor and average... But tbh what do you expect when playing out of their natural position? Xhaka is an engine (same as Cazorla) no one with a brain would ever consider playing him as the DM infront of shaky defenders... But suddenly we expect him to play that position.... Same as Ozil or even Messi at his last year in Barcelona... Playing them as box to box players is the dumbest thing their managers ever did...
Having one striker up top and wing play clearly doesn't work for us... Why don't they try tiki taka or something else? Will having an adjustable 4 42 be the worst thing in the world?
Defensively, the players don't even slide tackle or try to get physical or at the very least try to cut passing lanes all they do is fill the box (without trying to block shots) no team can succeed without these basic tactics
Unless we change these basics... Expect a steady decline...
The only reason the owners can be dragged into this is because they aren't football watchers.. they thought Unai and Arteta are actually good enough
Financially they are doing a great job... Arsenal is among the top 10 richest clubs in the world consistently and we have bought all the players we have ever needed... Ozil, Auba, Laca, Pepe Partey and Ben White all during a time period when clubs are shutting down...
Blame the scouts if they can't identify good enough players or youth managers if the kids aren't good enough.
Blame ownership if the facilities aren't good enough or player wages aren't paid... Or if they can't buy any players (which totally depends on the market and reputation)

If you can fall out of love with a club because a few bad years or even decades (like Brentford) may be you weren't in love in the first place.
