When you are tig welding an aluminum butt joint that requires 100% penetration, cleanliness of the aluminum is very important. especially the sheared edge.
This video demonstrates just how much difference the material prep makes. even just a little extra effort in making sure the material is clean in the weld area makes a very big difference when it comes to achieving full and smooth penetration.

The live shots on the back side of the welds was great to see. 👊🏼👊🏼 The Tig finger is the tool I recommend more than anything else when some one asks how to up their tig game. ☝🏼

    Jody,
I've independently tackled tig welding on watching your videos and trial and error. Never seen a bead layed down in person. After a tank of Argon and a lot of cards I'm welding aluminum better that our local shop. Biased opinion! I can't tell you how much I appreciate the time it takes for you to put your videos together and share them for guys like me to learn from. I consider myself one more success in securing a lost art form. Our trades are slowly fading away and for guys like me, I love to keep it alive and keep it real.

Master.. I have to thank you:
You changed my Life. I started welding 4 years ago, since in Italy is difficult to find a job; I learned to stick weld through your videos, then TIG welding, First on carbon steel, then on stainless.
I started with Little projects, but I'm not a business man, so i have never been able to get full satisfaction (concerning economical aspects).
1 week ago my Brother talked to a guy (this guy has a business in welding mid/big aluminium structures), he was looking for a TIG welder for aluminium for his business and I had the chance After 4 years to weld a beat (since here in Italy you generally go through job agencies and they Just look at your curriculum and no certified expirence means no chance, especially if you are 33 like me or so on).
Well I was a Little nervous, since i never had a chance to weld aluminium; i mean, i didn't speep at all yesterday night, watching your vids over and over and over, then I was looking for a manual instruction for their welding machine (a new fronius, it's very complicated, but for a noob/average welder like me is the kind of machine that makes you feel that she's doing the job for you🤣🤣... Seriously, can't Remember the model, try 1 if you have the chance... Very expensive tough, I think 6k dollars, but honestly when i Just started welding I understood what you pay for) and I could not find It... So when they saw me this Morning they weren't really thinking I was able to do anything good, cause they knew I never welded aluminium.
Well my first beats were almost perfect (visually, don't know in structural terms, no 1 did analisis or brake test) they were kinda amazed cause they had many guys there talking for the job and nobody could weld properly (since here TIG=stainless 99% of time); then they showed me some of the structures they have in stock and the boss told that those welds were done by their ex-welder After a Life in TIG experience on steel and 1 year practice on alu (honestly very ugly, no weave, poor cleaning action, oxide everywhere) and he could't believe I could do that better at First time.
So now I have a job, and they told me that maybe (they Need to test how good I am as a welder Carpenter, if I am ant affordable ad a person etc.) In the next months I'll have a better contract and 1/2 welding operators below me, even If I feel I have to learn so much.
Well, probably you won't read this, but it's a couple of hours I can't believe this Just happened and I'm about to cry for the Joy! I worked so hard this 4 years to improve myself, but I couldn' t do anything without your videos and your help: It May sounds Amazing/incredible or dunno what, but I live in the other side of Planet earth and you changed my life and I Will never finish to thank you and to learn from your videos. Thank you Mr. Jody, really thank you!
      Giovanni

Absolutely love my TIG fingers. I was doing a number of long runs on Aluminium plate recently and was having trouble in the middle of the sheet following the ABCs (always be comfortable). My solution was to run one TIG finger on my torch hand and one on my feed hand so I could rest my hand and keep the filler steady way out on the sheet. Worked awesome.

Great video Jody! I love your videos. They realy helped me when I was beginning on stick and tig welding 4 years ago and still does today.
About the tig finger, normally i put a piece of leather upon the glove on the finger that keep in touch on the work pice, but it always end up burning the leather. Would be very helpful to have some of this tig fingers to work. But unfortunately Im from Brazil 🇧🇷 and its not easy to get things from US, like your tig fingers and furick cups.
Keep the good work. It means a lot to the welders community!

I was butt welding .063 aluminum today at work. My beads weren't quite as pretty as yours but there was no fixture and I didn't spend a lot of time cleaning the edges, though everything had just been cut -- I just hit the edge with a file and wiped it with alcohol. The only place I could place my torch hand was on the piece that I was welding, but fortunately I had a TIG Finger.

a thing to note for all watchers:
aluminumoxide has a higher density than aluminum, which is why it will go to the bottom of your puddle, creating this line on the root if you are lucky, or become an inclusion in your weld if you are not... if you are dealing with thicker aluminum butt joints it is quite good to put a tiny bevel on the back so that line won't become a crack.
in contrast, when welding stainless - all the dirt and ferrous oxides have a lower density - so you can "cook em up" and not have them in your root or your weld.

Im about to do a modification/repair on a boat outboard leg and I'm after some advice. The cavitation plate keeps cracking from the stress of the fin bolted to it. I've had a go at repairing the crack using 4043 filler at about 120 amps but it cracked again immediately after the first use. My plan is to cut the cavitation plate off which will cut off the cracked area and weld the fin in place of the cavitation plate. The leg is cast aluminium and the fin is made from some unknown aluminium plate.

Hi Jody, I did a boat welding course a couple of years back and they use MIG for speed and the butt joints are background (so flipped over and a grinding wheel used to grind a V back into the back of weld (where you see the oxide line) and then re-welded from that side. Does that actually make the weld any better, or is it just introducing a lot more edges (and hence places where it might crack) into the weld?

    • @codeywolfe9447

4BoltClevo standard practice in the boat building industry, we call it back gouging. It makes for a 100% welded joint, if done correct you can X-ray it and it will pass

Hey I have bought a few Tig fingers but it's been of Amazon. Are those sold by you? They have your packaging

Hi Jake! It's Lyn Collier, Jody's wife. We have a few authorized dealers on Amazon...Micofiber and Athinity. Weldmonger sells on Amazon as well.

Why does some aluminum have a grainy or sandy appearance on the weld bead (front side) on while others weld nice and smooth? Cleaning doesn't seem to make an appreciable difference.

I believe it is the cooling rate. a small piece of aluminum like I used in this video becomes saturated with heat very quickly and the cooling rate and solidification of the puddle is slower than it would be if the piece were larger.
with a slow solidification, there is time for precipitates to form

    A silly, possibly insane question:
I would like to get into TIG as a hobbyist but the cost of argon is way too much for me.
I was thinking to make a sealed chamber in my basement with all the welding equipment, so that after a tank or two, the whole chamber will essentially be filled with Argon, which will stay there as it is much heavier than air.
Then every time I need to weld, I would go down into the chamber and weld everything there, I could wear a mask with a pipe to get oxygen from outside the chamber.
This can also be done in a box with glove inserts for very small things.
Is there any sense to do this if I have the space?

RagingShrimp67 ur gonna asphyxiate yourself rather than buy argon which is actually quite cheap lol

I guess you missed the part of my comment that reads "a mask with a pipe to get oxygen from outside the chamber."
Argon is far from cheap where I live.

Argon is pretty cheap in the scheme of buying an ACDC TIG rig. The rest of the setup will be the bigger financial hurdle.

    • @RagingShrimp67
      @RagingShrimp67 Před 6 lety

Are you sure? 1 liter bottle of 60 bar Argon costs about 80 USD where I live, a decent TIG setup I found for about 1000 USD.

I like it when your welds are not perfect and you run into issue like not cleaning good but you just admit it , to me that’s realistic
