When you are tig welding an aluminum butt joint that requires 100% penetration, cleanliness of the aluminum is very important. especially the sheared edge.
This video demonstrates just how much difference the material prep makes. even just a little extra effort in making sure the material is clean in the weld area makes a very big difference when it comes to achieving full and smooth penetration.

The multiple camera views is amazing. Thanks for the effort you put into these videos.
The live shots on the back side of the welds was great to see. 👊🏼👊🏼 The Tig finger is the tool I recommend more than anything else when some one asks how to up their tig game. ☝🏼
Jody,
I've independently tackled tig welding on watching your videos and trial and error. Never seen a bead layed down in person. After a tank of Argon and a lot of cards I'm welding aluminum better that our local shop. Biased opinion! I can't tell you how much I appreciate the time it takes for you to put your videos together and share them for guys like me to learn from. I consider myself one more success in securing a lost art form. Our trades are slowly fading away and for guys like me, I love to keep it alive and keep it real.
I have been using the tig finger for aluminum welding but recently, I used it for a 3/4 stainless butt joint test. It Worked out great to prop without burning my hand on a small joint where I could not walk the cup. Thanks for all the videos!
I use your Tig Fingers all the time and have bought several for my welder friends! Good Video Jody!
Thanks for the very informative video. I am getting ready to dive off into the tig world. Your videos are helping me understand alot!
You are an inspiration for me everyday, watching your videos really makes me excited to practice, thank you.
Best welding channel on youtube. Thank you!
I bought one of your TIG finger XL. It is GREAT! Works great to prop and steady and gives me that extra edge to make welds look nice.
I always use a Tig finger when welding aluminum! Thanks for the info Jody!
thanks brother
Their that good I got my mum to bring me home ten from the states, gave some to the mates at welding school in Ireland

Master.. I have to thank you:
You changed my Life. I started welding 4 years ago, since in Italy is difficult to find a job; I learned to stick weld through your videos, then TIG welding, First on carbon steel, then on stainless.
I started with Little projects, but I'm not a business man, so i have never been able to get full satisfaction (concerning economical aspects).
1 week ago my Brother talked to a guy (this guy has a business in welding mid/big aluminium structures), he was looking for a TIG welder for aluminium for his business and I had the chance After 4 years to weld a beat (since here in Italy you generally go through job agencies and they Just look at your curriculum and no certified expirence means no chance, especially if you are 33 like me or so on).
Well I was a Little nervous, since i never had a chance to weld aluminium; i mean, i didn't speep at all yesterday night, watching your vids over and over and over, then I was looking for a manual instruction for their welding machine (a new fronius, it's very complicated, but for a noob/average welder like me is the kind of machine that makes you feel that she's doing the job for you🤣🤣... Seriously, can't Remember the model, try 1 if you have the chance... Very expensive tough, I think 6k dollars, but honestly when i Just started welding I understood what you pay for) and I could not find It... So when they saw me this Morning they weren't really thinking I was able to do anything good, cause they knew I never welded aluminium.
Well my first beats were almost perfect (visually, don't know in structural terms, no 1 did analisis or brake test) they were kinda amazed cause they had many guys there talking for the job and nobody could weld properly (since here TIG=stainless 99% of time); then they showed me some of the structures they have in stock and the boss told that those welds were done by their ex-welder After a Life in TIG experience on steel and 1 year practice on alu (honestly very ugly, no weave, poor cleaning action, oxide everywhere) and he could't believe I could do that better at First time.
So now I have a job, and they told me that maybe (they Need to test how good I am as a welder Carpenter, if I am ant affordable ad a person etc.) In the next months I'll have a better contract and 1/2 welding operators below me, even If I feel I have to learn so much.
Well, probably you won't read this, but it's a couple of hours I can't believe this Just happened and I'm about to cry for the Joy! I worked so hard this 4 years to improve myself, but I couldn' t do anything without your videos and your help: It May sounds Amazing/incredible or dunno what, but I live in the other side of Planet earth and you changed my life and I Will never finish to thank you and to learn from your videos. Thank you Mr. Jody, really thank you!
Giovanni
Same here on the tig finger. Once you use it, it becomes a part of your daily equipment. I could not imagine welding without one now.
Question ? For welding Aluminum - What cooling gas is used ? Argon or Carbon Dioxide ?
Absolutely love my TIG fingers. I was doing a number of long runs on Aluminium plate recently and was having trouble in the middle of the sheet following the ABCs (always be comfortable). My solution was to run one TIG finger on my torch hand and one on my feed hand so I could rest my hand and keep the filler steady way out on the sheet. Worked awesome.
Nice tip Jody, it underscores the need to clean. And as a happy customer, I also would recommend the Tig Finger, no more burnt, shrunk glove fingers.
I enjoyed the commercial!!really wasnt bad at all,tig fingers rock and are game changers for welders,id like to try the xL for some of the heavy duty mig/mag welding i do..
Jody, your tips are excellent!! I've bought the tig fingers and they are excellent! they do what you say they will do!!
Awesome video, as usual! I have not been able to use the tig finger properly, but I've been trying to use it on the pinky finger, instead of the middle finger, as shown in this video.
Tig fingers are great I have both of them use them all the time especially when you have to weld heavy aluminum like always great video
The Tig Finger is a must have for welding aluminum !! I wear Tillman 30M gloves, so things can get hot fast. With the tig finger I can prop or even flatten it out and rest my wrist or knuckles on a piece without worrying too much about the heat.
Great video Jody! I love your videos. They realy helped me when I was beginning on stick and tig welding 4 years ago and still does today.
About the tig finger, normally i put a piece of leather upon the glove on the finger that keep in touch on the work pice, but it always end up burning the leather. Would be very helpful to have some of this tig fingers to work. But unfortunately Im from Brazil 🇧🇷 and its not easy to get things from US, like your tig fingers and furick cups.
Keep the good work. It means a lot to the welders community!
I was butt welding .063 aluminum today at work. My beads weren't quite as pretty as yours but there was no fixture and I didn't spend a lot of time cleaning the edges, though everything had just been cut -- I just hit the edge with a file and wiped it with alcohol. The only place I could place my torch hand was on the piece that I was welding, but fortunately I had a TIG Finger.
I have moved to Thailand and had a lot of trouble getting supplies here. I finally bought at tig finger copy here. Well I threw it away and ordered a real one. There is a big difference the copy was mostly a single thickness.
Wow there's always something to learn from your videos, you put them together very well, thank you! Also the TIG finger is freakin genius, i have the small one, about to buy the xl.
Awesome video Jody thanks for helpful tips/ ps tig finger is must have for tig welding love mine have 3 🙏👊🏻
great video, the Tig Finger is a great tool to have on hand ,, I need the XL too now ,, thanks
Great video Jody! I was taught by my instructor to always roll my filler wire parallel to my tungsten while weaving from edge to edge on joints. I would love to hear your thoughts on that technique.
Finally , waiting for this a long time
Good video thanx
Very interesting thank you very much
Great info. Love this channel.
great video Jody. thanks!
a thing to note for all watchers:
aluminumoxide has a higher density than aluminum, which is why it will go to the bottom of your puddle, creating this line on the root if you are lucky, or become an inclusion in your weld if you are not... if you are dealing with thicker aluminum butt joints it is quite good to put a tiny bevel on the back so that line won't become a crack.
in contrast, when welding stainless - all the dirt and ferrous oxides have a lower density - so you can "cook em up" and not have them in your root or your weld.
I really like the TIG Fingers, both of them.
Great video Thanks Jody
i have a tig finger man. that device is well worth the cost... any one who welds needs this. pick one up.. thanks for the videos
Nice knowledge
Thanks for the video.
Always appreciate your videos. Now that I have more hood time, I dig more subtleties and often when welding I think, what would jody do?
What would make a crazy video is one with just bad fitments, bad positions, gaps, cursed metal and nooks and cranies.
Great vid!! Very informative. I always wondered about the peppering affect. Sometimes I will get it, and not others. I will try bumping up the argon flow, for sure!! Thank you, sir!!!
P.S. Love the tig fingers!!! They RULE!!!
Also, i have never seen that back-side shot. That was AWESOME!!! It's like the weld is under the oxide layer!! Totally cool to see!!! Would back purge help that??
thank you Mr. Jody
Thank you
I have 2 sets of tig fingers. Love 'em!
sure you are the best 👍
Yes they do work great, tig finger all the way.
Watching that oxide layer on the back side is trippy, it's like an aluminum bag that you can see fill up as you add rod...
Hey Jodie I really need you to make a tig finger glove .just 1 finger you can hook on your pinky and then run down the back side of your palm and strap around for wrist..for laying on a hot piece when you can't prop..
If i could suggest a video it would be 3/16" wall square tube cut and etch, 2 1/2" tube with a square tube insert to weld up against, so essentially 3 welding surfaces to flow into, with and without root pass, can it be done in one pass? that sort of thing.
Super, as usual.
good vid well done looks like i need to buy a ship load of suff
Jody,
Thank you.
Jody is so good I don’t even weld but after watching his videos I own 7 TIG Fingers! 🤣
kkash72 you ever try the BBQ TIG fingers?? They are da bomb🤣🤣
RamblerMan68 Oh yeah they are, that’s why I only have 7 left. They are delicious! I prefer mine with an Argon shake. 🤪
Would you please do a 45 degree 2mm x 100mm pipe aluminum butt weld and give tips as you change from going inside the angle to the outside edge weld?
Im about to do a modification/repair on a boat outboard leg and I'm after some advice. The cavitation plate keeps cracking from the stress of the fin bolted to it. I've had a go at repairing the crack using 4043 filler at about 120 amps but it cracked again immediately after the first use. My plan is to cut the cavitation plate off which will cut off the cracked area and weld the fin in place of the cavitation plate. The leg is cast aluminium and the fin is made from some unknown aluminium plate.
I'm new to welding aluminum and not out of welding school very long what type of file to you recommend to use for filing the edges? thanks in advance.
The tig finger is awesome I have a couple normal and a couple XL, I like both for different situations. Keep up the good work and I pretty much learned what I am looking for while welding from watching your videos. Thank you for your dedication on these videos.
Ok but seriously would you consider starting a Patreon? I don't need welding equipment but I'll happily chip in a couple bucks a month to support the education I get from your video habit.

Jodie can you explain the cleaning and welding with aluminum bronze rods I’m having a lot of problem it seems I can’t get it clean enough thank you .
Nice !!!
Can you make a video on how to weld double miter angle alu
I’ve tried to make a cube from angle (iron) alu
A wheeled frame for my inverter , filler, parts clamps argon etc
but my 90degree angles end up anything but good , it warps and pulls beyond control
opinions on the mt200 welder
A possibly very stupid question but is there no flux that can help reduce porosity and problems with the oxide layer on the back and between the plates?
Nick Jarman ,Hey Jody what would be a good tig machine for a home shop? I've got an old 175 Lincoln mig machine that I love,(old trnasfomer machine), what would be a good machine for stainless and aluminium ,inverter machine?
Btw the tig finger XL is the bomb!
Lokus TV Yup, I love it!
Tried to buy a XL from Canada but shipping is prohibitive. I wouldn't mind receiving a whole box of it and ship it for cheap from Montreal for fellow welders.
Amen.
Thank you for these awesome videos, I use your techniques everyday and your advice has helped me through welding school. THANK YOU!

Question ? For welding Aluminum - What cooling gas is used ? Argon or Carbon Dioxide ?
Hey jody love your vids .need your advice on a Kawasaki kxf450 frame im modifying. What filler metal do u suggest? guess frame is a 6000 series?
I've been scratching my head all day wondering why my coupons penetrated through but didn't bond. Its cause I neglected to clean my edges properly. Thanks for the educational video!
nice video Jody. but I have a question off topic have you tried the Vulcan 220 mp or have a advice on it
did u ever try pure bee's wax on your wire wheel and cutting tools on aluminum. i use it and i get great welds with no acitone.
What type of aluminium are you welding on? Would the settings be different on 6061 type alu?
what about cleaning edges with HCl or sulfuric acid?
Im new, so having it go through the back like that is normal? i figured i was over cooking it. On aluminum I cant seem to not do that. unless its pretty thick. and to go with the rest of the comments, the tig finger is great, I have 2. melted my glove without one. I think m y glove actually lit on fire it got really hot couldn't see it. lol. use the tig finger all the time now.
How can i get the white etched zone when welding aluminum to get smaller or larger? Seems like its always super wide on each side of the bead.
I have a question. What create the dime effect is that the effect of adding rod periodically
Hi Jody I need an advise from you on welding butt weld 2mm aluminium coping 520mm width length without through penetration. I have tried controling my temperature by moving to pulse welding. But it's still very difficult to manage on aluminium 1015. Maybe there is some other life hack's? I'm using TIG Jasic T200 pro
would those fingers be good for mig welding? or would the spatter just wreck it?
So you weld with 100% argon for aluminum. Tig welding. I have a miller maxstar. Well that work?
What all kind of tig alluminam tests are there
hi, what cup and lense are you using here, ive been looking for one just like this?

How far down was your foot? Did you keep it all the way down all throughout, or did you switch to like, 70% at some point?
I have the opportunity to tell you how to handle electricity according to the shape of the electrode in the source of the arc. I am writing to write this on the Türiya.
Hi, I know it is an old video..is it possible to weld a butt joint with an 1/16 gap opening without some sort of backing?
круто, корень шва хороший , но он всегда на алюминии с полосой,оксидная пленка собирается в кучу и на конце валика застревает. Мы так варим, по возможности.Это хорошо или плохо. Формовка газа решила эту проблему?
What is happening if I start a puddle, I go to add filler rod, and the rod melts and droops before it hits the puddle.
Was that JD holding the thermometer? haha
Is there ever a reason to not run helium other than being out of it at the time?
Jody, I see the TIG Finger on Amazon... is that yours?
What's this tig finger made of? Asbestos?
Show 👏👏👏

you should call everlast, and tell them to let you review the new model tig welders. Everlast power powerarc 141stl, the Everlast powerarc 161sth, and maybe even the Everlast powerarc 210stl. Tell them I wanted you to review their new welders and maybe they will cut me a discount on one of their welders.
Hi Jody, I did a boat welding course a couple of years back and they use MIG for speed and the butt joints are background (so flipped over and a grinding wheel used to grind a V back into the back of weld (where you see the oxide line) and then re-welded from that side. Does that actually make the weld any better, or is it just introducing a lot more edges (and hence places where it might crack) into the weld?
4BoltClevo standard practice in the boat building industry, we call it back gouging. It makes for a 100% welded joint, if done correct you can X-ray it and it will pass
Yeah fair enough, I just didn't know if the mob I did the course with just made it up or it was a universal thing in the boat building industry.
Awesome Jody, you are the best!Great idea on the back shot vs arc shot.
just a little tip, point the camera in the same direction as u welding, cuz in the start of the video, the arc shot goes left, and the back side shot goes right, and my eyes cant go in the opposite directions 😂😂😂😂😂😂
well yeah when you look at something from the other side the direction will be flipped. its like a mirror, when you look to the right your mirror guy is looking to their left. its not a camera placement issue its how it would look if you were watching someone weld.
anthony10370 i know WHY it looks like that, im just saying that u can mirror flip it in the edetion program so it would go the same direction.
2 questions..........for ANYONE please.......................so no argon purge is needed? and question #2 is will a helium /argon MIX help or no?(75/25?) ohhh its for 1/4 inch alumin (pipe and plate certs!) btw.....ty in andvance.
Hey I have bought a few Tig fingers but it's been of Amazon. Are those sold by you? They have your packaging
Hi Jake! It's Lyn Collier, Jody's wife. We have a few authorized dealers on Amazon...Micofiber and Athinity. Weldmonger sells on Amazon as well.
👏👏👏👏👏
Can you make video-TIG for begginers.
He has a TIG basic series. czcams.com/video/h0oiq7BIT4Q/video.html
Why does some aluminum have a grainy or sandy appearance on the weld bead (front side) on while others weld nice and smooth? Cleaning doesn't seem to make an appreciable difference.
I believe it is the cooling rate. a small piece of aluminum like I used in this video becomes saturated with heat very quickly and the cooling rate and solidification of the puddle is slower than it would be if the piece were larger.
with a slow solidification, there is time for precipitates to form
A silly, possibly insane question:
I would like to get into TIG as a hobbyist but the cost of argon is way too much for me.
I was thinking to make a sealed chamber in my basement with all the welding equipment, so that after a tank or two, the whole chamber will essentially be filled with Argon, which will stay there as it is much heavier than air.
Then every time I need to weld, I would go down into the chamber and weld everything there, I could wear a mask with a pipe to get oxygen from outside the chamber.
This can also be done in a box with glove inserts for very small things.
Is there any sense to do this if I have the space?
RagingShrimp67 ur gonna asphyxiate yourself rather than buy argon which is actually quite cheap lol
I guess you missed the part of my comment that reads "a mask with a pipe to get oxygen from outside the chamber."
Argon is far from cheap where I live.
RagingShrimp67 didnt miss that at all. Just thought its ridiculous
Argon is pretty cheap in the scheme of buying an ACDC TIG rig. The rest of the setup will be the bigger financial hurdle.
Are you sure? 1 liter bottle of 60 bar Argon costs about 80 USD where I live, a decent TIG setup I found for about 1000 USD.
I like it when your welds are not perfect and you run into issue like not cleaning good but you just admit it , to me that’s realistic
Tig finger is the best I would quote Alex Brown and say you can lock in your finger and glide.
My only complaint about the tig finger is that I only have one size, so far.
I think I've got it...I'm not running hot enough...BRB
Что бы детская жопа (baby-s butt) не образовывалась, снимается фаска с обратной стороны. Отностится кстати к дефектам при сварке алюминия.
Thanks, baby butt doesn't look good, cleaned metal prep weld, penetration goes nicely at the backside(root deposit) if I may call it that, appreciate the vids, 1 dollar is 14 rand here in south-africa, would like to buy a Tig finger and dvds and gas lens kit. But cant
Great job, but i still can't find aluminum on the periodic table....you are surely pros in metall working so please call it like a professional by it's real name aluminium.
AndyH23284 it's like fries and chips. Chips and crisps. Differents regions pronounce words differently
Actually when it was discovered it was named aluminum first.
Aluminum, that's what it was called on every plane we sent to Europe to bail your sorry asses out😎👍
RamblerMan68 hahahahahahha
Hahahaha exactly. 👍🏻 🇺🇸
