I read 5 books about different places in 5 different places đ° (Barcelona edition!)

- I tried something new by having a themed reading month, where I read books that have locations in the titles (House, Beach, School, Store, and Castle) and then visit those locations while I'm in Barcelona! My favorite place was definitely Casa Vicens, which also happens to coincide with my favorite book for the month too. I'm gonna try another theme next month so maybe these book wrapups will be a little bit more creative đ Hope everyone is doing well now that spring is coming!! I've obviously been traveling a lot and unfortunately got sick, hence why I haven't posted lately (I tested negative for covid tho so dw). Hoping to get back on track with videos once I recover. Thanks for sticking around regardless â€ïž

@@PurpleQueen3 oh. Wow. I think you're asking a bit much there. I mean, expecting authors to have a basic level of research about the demographic they're writing about rather than just winging it and doing what seems right stereotypically without actually showing specific identities? Quote of the Day: âWhereâs my Enemies-to-Lovers Romance? How come when people hate me, they just hate me instead of secretly wanting to bang me?â
just gimme a win for once!!
Unintentionally dressed up like a university student (because that's just my wardrobe) when I went to Girona this week and blended into a student group doing a tour of sites around the city, all for free. Nobody asked me a single question the entire time, it was great.
love that!! i also visited girona while i was in spain :P
Stealth mission
Enemies to lovers only works if the pining takes really long. The slow-burn is such a torture but that's why it's a fun trope. But if it's a rushed story, the trope becomes its own enemy
its all about the PINING
Perfectly worded !
When I read House of Hollow last year I picked it from my shelf and a SPIDER CRAWLED OUT OF IT !! I threw the book across the room but when I calmed down and read the book I realised how damn fitting that was honestly đ I loved that book
NOT A SPIDER NOOOOO
@@withcindy A BIG ONE AS WELL EWWWW
I read House of Hollow and I totally agree with your review of it! The author did a great job with the writing in terms of the description of uncomfortable, but ethereal beauty and the body horror elements and the general atmosphere was very enticing.. Horror in books tends to be hit or miss, but when authors get it right, you can feel it in your skin. I also like that it's just a one-off and not trying to be a series, just a very solid standalone story.
Cindy blending easily with the students is like the romance readers blending easily with the marginalized after you posted that trashy romance book reviewđđ€Ș
STAAHPPPPPP
âthe main character goes to the beach and criesâŠwhich is a MOODâŠâ đđ
Wow Cindy's channel being educational??? We love to see it!
I know, right?
Ooooh this is the first time I've heard the hanahaki trope make it into a published book(House of Hollow). Damn all those fic writers grow up fast!
From whatever Iâve gleaned on Booktube, âBeach Readâ was confused acquaintances to lovers.
DEFINITELY, not enemies to lovers lol
The University of Barcelona looks incredible !
it was so serene!
Reading people we meet on vacation on the beach last week is some good shit lemme tell you
YESSSS hope u enjoyed it
Cindy: it's flowers being vomited and you don't know why
Me: ma'am, she's goth and in love. She probably just has hanahaki
I literally love cindy so much I hope she continues to grow and become even more successful. She is so fucking real, honest, and hysterically funny it's so refreshing to see a genuine person on the platform grow. Also I left a comment critiquing her style and she responded to it and took my critique on board and that meant so much to me â€ïž
This video concept of going to places relating to the books youâre reading is so timely because Iâm reading The Prisoner of Heaven by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, and it details the horrific prison conditions during the Spanish civil war⊠and itâs set at Montjuic Castle đ and then I realized that I had a picnic on the hill beneath the castle when I visited Barcelona in 2017, without having any idea about its historic use as a prison đ đ đ not me eating cheese and crackers on former prison grounds đ đ đ đ đ
the castle was depressing tbh LOL
Cindy's out here risking her eyesight to look at some dogs and fit the theme đ
gotta do it for the vlog
cindy filmed a travel vlog instead because she knew deep down in her heart that most of them were 3 stars lmao
LOL gotta make up for the "meh" reviews i always give out
I loooove the incorporation of locations with these books
oooo are u doing buzzwordathon too??
how is you described Emily Henry's writing is exactly how I feel about it! It's why she is my favourite. I love how she takes time to develop her characters rather than leave that on the back-burner to focus on the romance. She has a new book coming out in May and I'm excited to read it. I hope it's as good as PWMOV.
Btw i know you enjoy fluff so I recommend checking out the Switch by Beth O'Leary. It's very wholesome and it also has that focus on characters more than the relationship. And as a whole it's super fun!
For these same reasons I love Emily Henry Books. She works on the individual characterâs personality and then brings them together.
However, I feel that her book titles are a bit misleading or not appropriate to the bookâs theme. I mean why is it called âBeach Readâ? And also why her books have different covers. I always like her US covers. But I am from India and we here have boring UK covers readily available at reasonable prices but US Covers are not that commonly available or are available at a sky rocketing price.
There's this concept I learned about in my Gender and Society class called "intensive motherhood", where moms are expected to do everything possible in order to be good mothers, which involves a lot of emotional labor. It's really pushed in the west, and it sounds like "The School for Good Mothers".
House of Hollow has been one of my favorite books out of the last tens I read lately. it's so unique and weird and well written,
There's no School for good fathers book because the plot wouldn't be believable. Society praises men for being a semi-decent parent and then scrutinize and criticize mothers for every thing
there actually was a school for good fathers in the book, but they werent as strict compared to the moms, for obvious reasons -_-
I'm from Barcelona, so I really appreciate this video. Thank you so much for the love you showed to my city đ„°
(I loved Sayaka Murata's novel and I need more books from her)
Barcelona looks so beautiful!!!! ahhh thank u for showing it to us in such a unique way â€ïž
its really nice how you mix book analysis and tourism, and with great editing a playlist too! thank you for your content
House of Hollow is on my (ever-growing) TBR, it was good to hear your take on it. The locations are beautiful, enjoy the world since you can!
âThe School of Good Mothersâ really intrigued me. If it was a movie, itâd be directed by Pedro Almodovar starring Penelope Cruz. Maybe a sequel to âParallel Mothersâ?
oooh i should look that up!
I was curious to check that movie out after I saw she was nominated for an Oscar, did you enjoy it?
@@Hillary429 I just know of it.
I loved the GaudĂ architecture so much more than I had expected when I was in Barcelona, would love to go back! đ
Dogs happily playing on the beach, a whole stray cat area đ„șBarcelona looks gorgeous, the view from that castle!
I read House of Hollow because it was one of our Books of the Month for March at my job and one of the things I enjoyed was that the book was almost like an extension of the sisters: Itâs grotesque and disturbing in many ways, and at many points you want to look away. But you canât. Itâs weird aesthetic of macabre beauty holds you and you just want to see where it all goes or why it is how it is.
Not Cindy coming for my occult Tumblr aesthetic. Oh well, sis knows her audience because House of Hollow has been on my TBR for like a year.
Hope you enjoy it!
def one of those goth girls who loved House of Hollow lol 5 stars for me
beach read was 5 stars too 'cause i love romances with actual âš substance âš
i'm so shook that you gave people we meet on vacation 5 stars haha
this vlog is so good!
i went to barcelona in like 2013 and it's gorgeous. i would not be opposed to this being a new series on your channel đ
I love this concept of visiting some of Cindyâs travels with their current reads. Super cute and unique take on vlogging.
iâm definitely gonna have to check out house of hollow it sounds so interesting! i hope your time in barcelona was super fun, it looked so pretty!
It was! i wish i had stayed longer!
woke up to the permanent eyebag rep we need
I always imagine Anya Taylor Joy as Grey Hollow
OOOOOHH that would be great casting
NO BC SAME OMG
love this idea of tying books to locations, i feel like i didn't see as much of barcelona as i wanted to when i visited a few years back so enjoying seeing different areas through your travels. :]
hope u go back!!
What a fantastic video. Loved the brief information about all the locations and every one of those books have a great premise.
Hi Cindy! I love the music you used for House of Hollow. Yeah... The book totally matches the house. Actually your book cover + location coordination is 100% on point. OMG I LOVE CONVENIENCE STORE WOMAN!!! đ„°đđâ€â€âđ„Great set, Miss Cindy!
Cindy uploading means I can be happy and continue to eat and procrastinate. It's a win-win.
whatcha eating
@@withcindy A sandwich. Because it's simple and quick to make.
I like how we contrast each other. Cindy loved People we meet on vacation and felt meh about Beach Read, while I loved Beach Read and ended up dropping People we meet on vacation đ
A lot of people feel similarly!
Ditto đ
Earthlings by Sayaka Murata was one of my favorite books last year. About double the length of Convenience Store Woman, it handles similar themes but in a MUCH darker tone. It took me a full day to read it, because I had to take multiple breaks, either because of crying from anger or how disturbing some scenes were. I really recommend it, although I suggest checking cw, just in case.
ooh thanks for the rec!!
omg house of hollow! i've been meaning to read this book for ages bc i really like krystal sutherland's other books
Thank you so much for your review of House of Hollow. Your review is vague enough that I know what the book is about but precise enough to know it was a good fit for me. I deeply enjoyed, finished in a day and gonna re-read it before returning it to the library. Thanks again and take care
Omg u read it even faster than I did !!
I like to hear you talking about books, ranting about books, and it just breaks the mood to see those truly aesthetic but redundant shots.
I was interested on seeing your thoughts on House of Hollow. I too really love it for the creepier aspect, the strangeness of the mains and how it is written, and their actual situation. The only thing is that I think it was the strongest part of the book, and also the payoff of the story. And as someone who isn't into investigative mysteries, it did have an element of that that I just didn't care for. And there is more in the book that I also thought the same of. In other words, I do love the book purely for the strangeness and the writing, but that is all I really like. It also does combine the gothic or horror with greenery which is something I love seeing in my books.
So many books I've had on my TBR in this video! I really enjoyed this video :) vibes were immaculate
I'm so glad! :D
yayy so glad you updated! I want to visit barcelona now
Love the feel of this video, so great to see you. I hope everything is great with you.
Thank you! You too!
yay i'm glad you liked House of Hollow! It's one of my fave of last year. I heard there's going to be sequel. I hope the author comes out with another story like this, her writing is too enticing.
Oooh a sequel? I would read it but I think the book still works as a standalone!
@@withcindy I totally agree with that!
I love the idea of this video and the editing style too!! So creative! đ„°

thank u! hoping to be more active on youtube once i feel better!!
I love how you went to all those places!!!! The dedicationđ„șâ„ïž
Hehe thank u!!
What a brilliant idea for a video. That Gaudi house is AMAZING. I have House of Hollows on the shelves need to get to it. Agreed on the repetitive nature of The School for Good Mothers, I also wanted more character and theme development EVERYWHERE. I was so excited for it and it fell flat. Thanks cut the Barcelona tour too.
It kinda felt like the author didn't know how to approach the middle section tbh
Thank you cindy. You just saved me from a long and boring af essay i have to finish until monday . â€ïž
You got this!
Iâm reading convenience store woman and she is really the type of woman who really knows what it is need to be done at that work Iâm enjoying the reading

Oh! I remember reading Lonely Castle in the Mirror in the original Japanese version several years ago. When you mentioned children being bullied and staying at home, I was like hold up, that sounds ~awfully~ like Japan lmfao.
It seems like it's a common problem in Japan :(
The cat corner is such an amazing feature! Wish more places would accommodate rather than kick out. I've gone back in person and man does it literally pale in comparison even after it was renovated.
