Sweden, Sweden, Sweden, what talents you create! What is it with this little country in the North? Answer: one of their treasures is / has been that they have a natural aptitude for singing and for music in general. It is in their genes. See for example "allsång på Skansen", Stockholm, where they meet and sing together once a week in the summertime. And their people's soul goes very, very deep. ABBA was one of the very first artists to be known outside of Scandinavia. A big hug from Norway, neighbour of Sweden.

This was one of their biggest international hits of 1979. It reached the top 20 in 20+ countries, reaching #1 in at least 10. It placed #2 in the UK, and reached top 40 in US, top 20 in Canada.
I actually prefer the Spanish version of this song. Even though the English version is a bigger production, their Spanish version is crisper vocally especially the harmonies in the chorus, and Agnetha sounds devine singing it in Spanish.

Hello again and thanks a lot for another reaction to ABBA songs
You are reacting to Bee Gees too; curiosly:
ABBA & Bee Gees was together in Concert for Unicef 1979
Bee Gees perforned "Too much heaven"
    and ABBA presents... "Chiquitita"!
(all songs from this concert donated royalties to UNICEF)
"Chiquitita" is an amazing ballad pop
lyrics of hope, great melodies, fantastic harmonies, a beautiful song!
"Chiquitita was a worldwide hit, specialy in Hyspan American countries

another good song from the same genre and album is

This song Chiquitita "Little One" was set up for its profits to go to UNICEF. This is ABBAs song for the needy children of the world. ABBA did a lot of their songs in Spanish it lends itself very well. You should start to notice that they took a shot at doing just about every genre of music. What a beautiful and gentle way to start the day than with this ABBA song, first debuting at the UNICEF concert in January 1979. Due to its Latin flavor, it was released in South Ametica in April 1979 and became the biggest hit in 25 years in Argentina. It was introduced straight out of the studio and no time for a stylized video. Your reaction was terrific. You are becoming quite the ABBA enthusiast and really pick up on the nuances of the music! 💕💥💥. Peace J ✌

Just to add that when I was in Bolivia in 1984, this song was also a hit and one that I heard quite often. ABBA donated 1/2 of all royalties from Chiquitita to UNICEF from 1979 until 2014 when Bjorn announced that ALL further royalties - 100% - from Chiquitita would go to UNICEF. So, in addition to it being a good song, another good reason to buy it.

hello, i'm so glad you were here again to continue with your reactions to ABBA songs and enjoy with these specialy, because I've been waiting for these, but I know that You are following a chronologic order (it's fantastic to see ABBA evolution)
now You are in the first single of the sixth ABBA album, "Voulez Vous"
several things to say about "Chiquitita" (1979) and its context
"Chiquitita" is a beautiful song, it has hopeful lyrics, a melody that starts very soft with Agnetha's solo, then grows and explodes in a powerful chorus; Agnetha and Anni Frida's vocal harmonies are of excellence
"Chiquitita" was composed especially for the Concert by UNICEF, invited (with a lot of artist) by Bee Gees
ABBA premiered "Chiquitita" that night in January 9 (1979), and its royalties are eternal for UNICEF
"Chiquitita" was ABBA's greatest success in Latin America, that prompted ABBA to record it in Spanish, and its success was so extraordinary that in the following years ABBA recorded an album with its best songs entirely in Spanish
"Chiquitita" was specialy the greatest hit of ABBA in my country Argentina
    And some of the intimacy
    "Chiquitita" was recorded in December 1978, before Christmas;
days later the blonde singer Agnetha (28) and the guitarist Björn (33) was separated with two youngest childs
(but they continue together in the group four years more, until their last recording in 1982)
This promotional video was in February 1979 in Swizterland, when ABBA go there to a special TV "ABBA in Switzerland"
It's their only promotional video that ABBA made without Sweden
I wish to see you soon in another reactions to ABBA songs
From these album "Voulez Vous", the ABBA disco album, You did before "Does your mother know" (live with "Hole in your soul")
I suggest you the opening track:
    "As good as new"
    or the fantastic disco song
"If it wasn't for the nights"

Found your channel through your VoicePlay /Geoff Castellucci reactions, but have to see your reaction to ABBA, nostalgic childhood vibe for me. They actually sang some songs in Spanish. I loved "Se Me Está Escapando" when I was a kid, which I had the Spanish version of on my album "The Visitors". There were, however, versions of that same album with the English variant of that song, "Slipping through my fingers". I think it was just chance which of the albums you got hold of. I might be wrong of course, may have been on different albums. I know for sure that there are both one English and one Spanish version of the song, though :-).

    Another comment
I loved when in less than a minute you related "Chiquitita" with "Fernando"
I did the same, they have similarities and contrasts
their title (a name or nickname in Spanish) are similar, in telling a story, in a melody in the tone of a ballad with a solo beginning of a singer (Frida in the previous one, here Agnetha) and in the harmony and beauty of her choirs
They differ in power ("Fernando" is softer, "Chiquitita" is stronger), in duration and ending ("Fernando" finishes soft, "Chiquitita" has the most final instrumental)
The videos also contrast, another beauty: "Fernando" is at night and with the image of fire, "Chiquitita" is from day to day with the background of snow
In my opinion "Chiquitita_ has some pluses
It allows us to check how excellent singers Agnetha and Frida are and what harmonies of excellence they achieve. It stands out especially when they stretch the monosyllables with great quality and beauty
It was the first song they recorded in Spanish, the precursor to an entire album in Spanish called "Gracias por la Música" (something that no other world-class group did).
And he has all his royalties donated to UNICEF
It's are two fabulous songs, two masterpieces. And two biggest ABBA's worldwide hits, after "Dancing Queen"
For minimal differences I prefer "Chiquitita", which is in my Top 5 of all ABBA songs, and "Fernando" in my Top 10

Everybody talks about the musical Mamma Mia or Kristina (which was great), but for some reasons Chess seems forgotten and never gets attention. Chess was the first musical Benny & Bjorn did after ABBA and it's a fantastic musical. I saw the original cast in London in 1986 and think it's one of the best musicals ever (up there with Cats, Phantom of the Opera, and Les Miserables). Check it out.., some great duets between female singers, male-female duets... etc.

Hi Hap3, kudos for clocking 3:43 - finally someone else who appreciates that sumptuous detail. (I would call it a countermelody, though, instead of harmony as it's a separate phrase and not in sync with the main vocal melody. Countermelodies are a bit of an Abba speciality - Björn's lines in the chorus of Knowing Me, Knowing You, for example.)

The clip for "So Long" (Made in Sweden for Export) shows their youthful exuberance while their most iconic video is for "Knowing Me, Knowing You" - despite the cheesy snow scenes and cutaways...their look and the improvised moves by director Lasse Hallstrom show them at their peak.
