The Kibbutz: Israel's Collective Utopia | History of Israel Explained | Unpacked

- This week, we’re dissecting one of the founding elements of Israeli society - the kibbutz. Founded in the early 20th century, these collective settlements helped shape the country’s identity.
Based on the idea that everything - from food to children - should be shared, the young immigrants who set up the first kibbutzim threw out the old European way of living and sought to create a system of complete equality.
It was a totally radical concept, but without it, Israel would be a very different place today.
But why were the kibbutzim founded, how did they work (did they work?) and what is left (if anything) of these communal utopias?
Let us know what you think about the idea of the kibbutz movement in the comments below.

I LOVE the idea of this, but for family and very close friends. Not necessarily sharing 100 % of everything, but basically having a neighborhood of family members, with shared communal areas and property, for dinners, celebrations, etc.. cousin sarah babysits for the family. uncle bob loves handy work and does the "maintenance". aunt ellen loves gardening, so she and other relatives tend to crops. grandpa loves to cook so he and other relatives handle family dinners. grandma is getting up there in age so everyone checks on her and makes sure she someone is there for her. everyone benefits and pulls their weight in some way. all wishful thinking of course lol i highly doubt it would work but i love the idea of it.
Make no mistake, despite the privatization and - thanks to it, the kibbutz population has grown most significantly in recent years. Families of old kibbutz members return to the kibbutz en masse. The greatness of the kibbutz movement is expressed in its ability to change according to time needs, without losing its spinal cord - the mutual guarantee of its members. Mutual guarantee is expressed in everyday life - education, health, culture and support for the weak and sick. So, to all the cries and defiance of the fate of the kibbutzim in Israel - you can relax - the kibbutzim are here to stay.
Amayn!
If it's privatized does it mean the community refuses to own property communally. Sounds like the Amish that choose to use cell phone and say they are still Amish.
Bosonian and YOU can be ignorant all you want because the Kibbutz movement explicitly gave up socialism and its values when they privatized DECADES ago. So since privatization no one is claiming to be anything other than capitalist & no one is claiming to be socialist since the ‘80’s ... when Kibbutzim said “we’re not socialist anymore!”. Don’t know how much clearer that can get for you🙄
Stay in school! Or not.
Notice how you said families. Real families. That's one major aspect they don't wish to return to.
My Israeli émigrée friend got a few stories About kibbutz, which says about it's longevity.
"A was in kibbutz, then I came home and found some guy, I said: what are you doing here?
-toughtt it was vacant...
-it's not! Leave now!
-okay...
Why didn't you locked it?
- our doors and windows don't have lock, just barriers so terrorists don't kill us...
Don't you get stolen?
No what can happen is that someone I using what's yours, you ask the group then it's returned.
What happens if someone doesn't comply?
-we sanction him.
If he continue
-we banish him from kibbutz..
She say that's there's resentment from the old kibbutz settlers that were assigned to dangerous areas as canon fodder.
that's what i love about tight knit communities like that. small towns in the US used to be like that and some continue to, especially farming communities. When my parents were kids it was common for people to leave the backdoor unlocked and neighbors would go in and borrow stuff and everyone was fine with it since you'd do the same for them. I do that today with my home sometimes, mainly because the only people who I'd allow entering my home without me around are the only people (close friends and family) that can get past my rottweiler without getting mauled.
I live in a kibbutz and some of the kibbutzim are no longer similar even by a little bit(except for a dining building in the middle of the kibbutz and the farms but the workers of the farms aren’t people that is living in the kibbutz. Most of them are workers from the east.)I can’t even recognize a quarter of the people I see in the kibbutz anymore because the kibbutz is building new houses for people from the cities that have no connection to the kibbutz or to his lands. The only thing that is the silence and the nature
I think there will be a lot of Jewish refugees from the USA and kibbutzim are the best way to settle them and get them up to speed on Hebrew and the culture. I hope to move there and hope I can go to a kibbutz to learn Hebrew and help out.
@@alexcarter8807 he is talking about harkavot(in translation: extensions).
There were a lot kibbutzim that were in a Economic collapse, and so some of them decided to build a "extension" of the kibbutz, which people there are outsiders and own the property, and aren't members of the kibbutz.
as a ( then) Brit , my first experience of kibbutz was Sdot Yam ( as an ulpanist, then volunteer) where I learnt very quickly about Alyah Bet !!
What a fascinating video. Yet another example of "light to all nations" can accomplish.
One of the best explanations , it drives me insanely more and more close to Israelis who constantly work for their society and attached deeply towards their land . They didn't focus on radical socialism or religious doctrination to unite the people , afterall , 'god's chosen people' are always successful ❤️!!

Where you communist. Does soviet union remind you of this system or not at all?
@@miltonperez1275 Well considering Soviet Union was a socialist industrial society, as opposed to agricultural communal society, they were vastly different
Why are not any kibbutzes outside of Israel? It could be helpful way how to serve needs for work and housing as well as education and social life to many people of present world. A specially for homeless people. People of Israel can help other people in many countries by promoting kibbutz movement and also with expertise and know how in kibbutz establishing process and with running and operating kibbutz as successful business model.
My guess is that if it works, it would be an bad example for an capitalist government

I support Kibbutz, I had a dream to go to a kibbutz, I didn't speak English at the time. There is no representative office in Poland.
A kibbutz is a socialist utopia and a social pressure-cooker. You need to be a very strong person with very strong ideals to survive in a kibbutz for long. I had a dream of joining a kibbutz for much of my adult life but I wasn't strong enough, so they didn't want me in.
nyyotam good on them and for you.
Can you please elaborate on that? Why do you have to be strong and in what ways? And what kinds of social pressure does one face?

You have to join their beehive mind. It's the synagogue of Satan wearing Tibetan beads.
@@meadowdream9144 Its the direct opposite. The Kibbutz sanctifies secularism. The only religion in the kibbutz is work. If you wanna know more about the kibbutz in a light fashion, here's a short humor skit about life in the Kibbutz: watch?v=pv0P6-zyjXk . I know this is a bit taking it to extremes as this is a satire, but well.. This is, more or less, exact.
Thanks for explaining what is kibbutz! My parents are Chinese and they experienced the horror of the Cultural Revolution in communist China. Communism is a hell when it is top-down controlled by government, millions of people died from famine and economic failure and millions more were kept in labour camps and worked to death. It worked in Israel because it is a bottom-up movement, in a small community with high trust and everyone has a spirit to work hard for their community.
And it's sad to see the current situation. People in kibbutz being massacred by those terrorists from Hamas. I wonder if it would be different if everyone in kibbutz has a gun like in Texas.
Yeah conservatives in America are extremely dishonest when they call Bernie sanders a soviet union style communist Bernie sanders is a quasi socialist and a social democrat because he went to Israel and lived in a kibbutz for awhile and saw how everyone provided and shared everything and how the government provided healthcare education and child care to its citizens if Bernie sanders wants anything for America he wants the quasi democratic socialist/social democracy that Israel was back from 1948 to 1983 Venezuela tried to copy what Israel did in a way but failed because of rampant corruption and only relying on oil revenue to do it Venezuela decided instead of creating other industry to rely on incase of the price of oil dropping it solely relyed on oil for its sole revenue as its funding so when the price of oil fell so did Venezuelas economy
As a Chinese person (whose ethnicity highly values three things, a hierarchical clan-based family dynamic, money, and academic achievement, all of which seem absent from the Kibbutz), this seems like hell, but it seems like a very interesting experiment on the human condition nonetheless.
It's relative, if you grew with a mildly wealthy family this seems hell, for 60% of the population that live in poverty this is heaven
Funny enough If those 60% decided to live on socialist communities and isolate from global economy, the rest at the top would crash down since Economy is a pyramid scam, a very big and Indorect one, but a pyramid scam nonetheless
As a Chinese person, you then know how much pressure and unnecessary stress is put on young people in school. They barely sleep. THAT is hell.
These are very similar to Hutterite colonies. Thanks for sharing
I heard about them. Are the Hutterites related to or similar to the Amish and the Mennonites?
@@Mer1912 They're all derived form the Anabaptist movement as far as I know. Ideological cousins, as it were

I saw a before and after kibbutz of what Hamas destroyed and can't imagine the pain the Israelis are going through
The Kibbutz seems like a fascinating and appealing way of life as well as being a great achievement in their own right. I have a couple of questions about Kibbutzim:
1. Although there was a socialist idea that underpinned the orginal kibbutzim, and this is not as strong in most of them nowadays, is there something inherent to Judaism or to Israel that inspires these communities in their various forms? One of the reasons I ask is that they do not seem to be similar models in other countries.
2. How does someone from outside a kibbutz become a resident or member - can it only be through marriage?
3. Do people who live on a kittubz work in jobs outside the kibbutz or do you have to work in the kibbutz to be a resident/member?
Yes because especially in Europe jews were isolated in they're own little communities for hundreds of years so all of them had to provide for each other and take care of each other and educate each other so it was pretty natural that a Jewish man was the one who came up with communism
Amazing!!
As member of the Unification community under Mr. & Mrs. Sun Myung Moon there a common dream to create communities. We have kibbutz among other communal ideas to start looking at. It starts with attitudes, wanting to be part of a group. It protects children, families. Let's see how things develop. Thank you for this video.
Why do you think this is a good time to talk about the Moon cult?!! This is not the time to be talking about that right now!
Didn't mention the religious kibbutzim.
Thank you so much for this video! I actually my father’s side is Jewish, but I am not in touch, have knowledge gaps/or a lot of it the gap, and, did Birthright Israel, we stayed at, and, I actually work in group homes in the United States now, for children, never made the connection, have described it as, “fascinating.” Didn’t ever think of why

It's the Kibbutz and the mentality that goes with it that I think convinced the Soviets back in 1948 or so that Israeli would naturally become a communist member nation. It's one of those things that seems clearly socialist but still seems to continue to work out. And that's okay! We have "Social" Security in the US and it started nearly 100 years ago and, at the same time, many in America have a great fear/reluctance/hesitation of socialism as an overall system. I'd really like to visit a Kibbutz someday.
Socialism is the glossy pamphlet they give you ,communism is the product you get ,always read the fine print
That would make sense since some of the Kibbutz were established by leftist socialists and Israel had a fairly strong leftist bend to it early on. Israel was also much more open to the Soviet Union and considered itself part of the "third world" (IE neutral in the cold war) and it was mainly only after the Soviet Union backed so many of Israels Arab enemies that they turned to the US and western Europe more.
@@arthas640 I think the Soviet Union was quite surprised that Israel did not become a communist or socialist nation. I am sure that Folks that lived in the Soviet Union thought that Israel with quite naturally go in that direction. And yes, just like you stated, the Soviet Union seemed to have a relationship with nearly all of Israel’s nearby enemies.
We stayed at Kfar Blum at an upscale Hotel.

As an American, when hearing and reading the term "Palestine" is very confusing. Was it refering to the whole state of Israel or just a region?
If I understand correctly, Palestine is a larger area than what is currently Israel.
Mostly what became the British Mandate of Palestine after they gave the Hashemites the land east of the Jordan River.
From what I've pieced together, part of this area was part of Phoenicia. The Phoenicians were definitely not Arab.
@@gringo3002 Simply the Mandate for Palestine encompassed what is today Jordan and Israel. The historical region called Syria Palaestina was smaller, mainly the Kingdom of Judea, where Judeans/Jews come from. Romans changed the name from to Palestine to punish the Jews for their revolt against Roman rule.

You should go and find one of the remaining Kibbutz communes. Interview the people there. It wouldn't be a pretty picture. Why do you think most of them privatized?
I visit family on Sde Eliyahu every year & they all LOVE it as do their neighbors at Tirat Zvi. People, make your own informed decisions. Visit, do not take all info from random commenters. Research for yourselves.

My grandfather lived in a kibbutz for a while as part of his speciality studies, and he loved it. Then, almost 40 years later, some of my friends lived in kibbutz for months or even a whole year. They all loved it. Sure, some kibbutz are poorer and some are richer, but isn't it also the case with capitalist countries and cities too?
Criticising the Kibbutz collective system just because it sounds a little bit like socialism/communism is wrong and rather ignorant.

General Rule of Thumb: Most Everything Taken to Extremes Eventually ends up NOT SO GOOD.
Especially when it gets to the point were you are forced to tow the line and then are blamed for it's failure for not having done so. Socialism is a vile ideology.
Pure socialism is but providing universal healthcare to your citizens helps business pay higher wages and prevents people from going bankrupt due to medical debt universal education helps people regardless of class status become more productive and an equal opportunity to become more successful free childcare to low and moderate income families allows families to be productive and contribute to the economy and have more disposable for essential needs and monthly payments to low and middle income families promote more people to have children since we have currently facing a population crisis in the united states where there isn't enough young people paying into the social security system to help pay for the large boomer population in the united states allowing building more affordable housing and apartments by the government can help reduce the cost of housing overall since the private housing market will have to compete with the public housing market a good example of this is Vienna Austria where there is 60% public housing and the cost of rent is only 1/3 the cost of rents in Paris and London where they don't have much public housing if you ask old people in Russia what they miss about the soviet union everyone will say the welfare programs but what they hated was not being able to become more successful and innovative this is why mixed economy capitalist liberal welfare states are the most successful because you get the best of both worlds all of the programs I listed Israel pretty much has and its one of the fastest growing economies in the world
I'm currently reading Heaven on Earth: The Rise and Fall of Socialism by Joshua Muravchik which includes a chapter on the history of the Kibbutz. It's a fascinating but ultimately disheartening tale of thwarted idealism. No other endeavour is more guaranteed to fail than the attempt to transform the base metal of human nature into gold.
They do something similar to Christian saints as well by regularly reminding Christian girls specially how big of a saint they shud be. Many become one too...unless ofcourse life happens.

The Jewish people are a good example of being successful despite hate.
they don't let the hate other people have for them get to them, they stay together and supporting each other no matter what
what about moshavim??? it seems more successful
currently there is not so much of a difference but even then there were no clear better method
Moshav isnt nearly as socialist, its basically a small village.
Their not the same at all
I'm pretty sure they aren't that different from cities tho

A bit controversial mistake there. In the period of Second Aliya was Mutassarifate al-Quds and not Palestine. Palestine was only after the British came.
That was it's the true and technical name but in the Anglosphere it was called Palestine at least as far back as the Victorian era. The Brits like many cultures had a tendency to call things by their own names rather than what the locals called it, either using their own names (like many of their colonies) or by using historic names (like calling Iran "Persia") or just using translations (like calling Deutchland Germany)
When these people were “building there settlements all over Palestine” like you say, what were the Palestinians role in this whole operation? Did they have anything so say about all of these settlements? I can here to learn…only half way through the video so maybe you mention something about it later…I’ll keep watching
Palestine wasn’t a name designating people called as such. Palestine was just a geographical name with assortment of ethnicities living in the region.
Didnt they had that in the 1930-1940?

Maybe... just maybe... the reason communism didn't have the same problems in Israel as it did in other countries, is that Israel wasn't immediately attacked and destabilised by the USA.
Like every other country that attempted communism was.
Maybe the problem isn't communism, maybe the problem is being attacked by America.

@@earlycuyler2295 repeating lies doesn't make you enlightened just ignorant. The random work immigrants you're talking about were not living there "for generations". No one could survive on the land b/c of the swamps & rampant malaria. The scant settlements of mud houses & water buffalos were there by grace of rich effendies who lived across the border. They kept these tribes as serfs & sign of their ownership. When Jews started settling outside the cities & drying the swamps, more Arabs infiltrated the land with the encouragement of the antisemitic British who also needed cheap labor for their usage. Only Jews dried the swamps, settled their ancient land & turned it into a single - tiny - oasis, unique from all the huge loser levantine "states" around them. Unfortunately, Israel is still recovering from socialism. The disastrous policies of Labor had created a nightmare for Israel that, despite thirty years of market reforms, Israel is still recovering from. The biggest issue is that for decades Israel has incentivized parasitic behavior for hundreds of thousands of people by paying them to have children while not working or accumulating valuable economic skills (human capital...). Today, Israel’s low labor productivity, long hours, and the perception that the “system isn’t working” is all a byproduct of the failures of utopian socialism. Furthermore, these folks have been in labor unions for five decades, and the legacy of labor unions on the psychologically of the country (the socialist mentality...) as well as the low quality of service stemming from a sense of entitlement by bank officials who still act like they’re in a union... “customer always right?” BS. I’m always right!! What are you gonna do, fire me???
