    Don't get me wrong, Jacob's compositional skill and ideas are incredible and the music in this song makes me tear up. But the final nail in the coffin that makes me bawl my eyes out is the lyrics. I don't think he gets enough credit as a poet, because the lyrics in this song are so real that it's heart-breaking. Beautiful beautiful beautiful song.

    • @tom_sundog
      @tom_sundog Před 5 lety +24

      Massive Jacob Collier fan here too, but like the one issue I have with him is his lyrics can be incredibly bland and cheesy. Like this song in particular, it kinda sounds like every love song ever written, devoid of any personality, very run of the mill. Ofc he can write really great lyrics when he wants, like in The Real Early Morning for instance. But would be interested to know what do you or anyone else get out of the lyrics on this song?

    • @dimadozen5199
      @dimadozen5199 Před 5 lety +46

      @@tom_sundog I find that with this particular song, the lyrics are kind of vague and this allows for them to be left for interpretation. In doing so, the audience is affected in various different ways. If you inspect the lyrics, they are bland - no doubt about that. However, combined with the music and structure of the whole piece, it's bound to pull some heartstrings regardless of what experiences one might go through. Some might think about the song in a romantic context; others can listen to it and remember a deceased loved one and seeing them again in the afterlife (I'll hold you once more). That's what I find is the most beautiful part of this song - the lyrics work in conjunction with the music regardless of how one interprets it.

    A voice to soothe your aching heart
    And I told you goodbye
    Time passes us by
    It seems like our day is gone
    But I know, in my heart, I’ll always care for you

      @David Blotchhead I don't think it's a matter of choice... you don't "choose" to feel sad when a loved one dies, and in the same manner (though not the same severity) you can't "choose" not to feel jealous. You can convince yourself over a long time but it's not a simple "choice".

    • @jeremiahsweeney6577
      @jeremiahsweeney6577 Před 5 lety +9

      @David Blotchhead I also had the same experience. I used to get depressed hearing certain people, but Jacob helped me to turn that around. There is just so much life in what he does, that gradually I stopped getting jealous or depressed about hearing people better than I currently am, epecially when they are much younger than I am. That life and energy has since become the fuel for me to keep pressing towards what I want to be. Those people better than me became my biggest motivator. That being said, it's not like Jacob's music magically flipped a switch somewhere in my brain, it took conscious effort to shift my perspective over.

      @Kamil-B Před 3 lety +4

      It seems to me it's the matter of initial motivations. Speaking for myself, I got demotivated and stopped making music and in retrospect I realize what I was looking for in music was mainly validation of my talent. I got plenty until I got no more.

    One must attempt to glimpse at the genius and fearless exploration this man shares. Someone expressed that his music has no melodic value... using Quincy Jones' 600 tracks for Michael Jackson's video, for instance. The human brain needs to identify, categorize and make sense of what we hear; those are our limits. Music has no boundaries. The integration of orchestral bliss, crooning jazz changes, the ridiculously challenging 7/8 over 5/8 or 21/2 rhythms... the 1/4 tone pitch modulations. It may be too much for one's limited theoretical knowledge or current ability to absorb, and that's understandable. To feel bombarded is where you're at, and that's okay, too. Listen and then listen again. Then listen intently, then listen to enjoy. Listen to appreciate. Listen to hear. Listen to find. Listen with a larger aural perspective. Listen with no judgment. Listen.

      I'm a believer that just because the music is theoretically complex doesn't make it good - emotions can be delivered through simple harmony as well, which is potentially heresy.
      Nevertheless, I enjoy JC's music a ton and so it's good to me at the very least. I also think that much of pop music doesn't use harmony, even simple harmony, to its full capabilities.
      But I wonder if we could extract this same level of enjoyment from other artists if we gave them the same level of respect as we give to JC? Here we are, going into his album expecting to be blown away and listening for every single detail. We're sort of already entering with a mindset that whatever we think is 'bad' is just something we don't understand, or a creative liberty on JC's part. What if we gave every single artist this privilege?
      Are we biased towards JC and is that necessarily a bad thing? If we really listened to all music (yes, even pop) with no judgement? Sometimes I find myself listening to JC only searching for good qualities, while ignoring any aspects that would irk me if it was any other artist.

    I know this feeling... I know it too well. I have this cycle where memories come pouring out of me all of the sudden. It usually happens to me every 5 years or so. These flashbacks are very strong, and I get to relive the past with my current brain. The seemingly subtle emotions of the moments always come back to me amplified. Sometimes, they hit me so strong that I don’t how to deal with them. Even if I could express it, to whom do I directed to? The time has long gone, and yet the memory is so precious. It’s unsettlingly floating around in the air with nowhere to go.
    Jacob, you have allowed me to bring peace to these feelings. Thank you for sharing your world with your magical abilities.

    Lo mejor de Jacob Collier aún esta por venir...con más madurez...y si se mantiene alejado de los vicios del éxito, podrá perfeccionar su armonización y hacer cortes mas sutiles, con mayor experiencia hará mejores melodías, ojala sin perder esa frescura y creatividad...es una humilde opinión...te deseo mucho éxito en tu carrera.

    Lyrics:
    Once you needed somebody
    To hold you close to your body
    But I'd already gone
    Once you listened for someone -
    A voice to soothe your aching heart -
    When I told you goodbye
    Time passes us by, seems like a day is gone
    But I know in my heart I'll always care for you
    And you care for me
    And I will always remember the world we share
    The road may be long (long, long, long)
    But someday I'll hold you close, once more
    Time passes us by, the sun in your eyes is gone
    But I know in my heart I'll always care for you
    And I will always remember the world we shared
    The road my be long (long, long, long, long, long, long)
    But someday I'll hold you close, once more
    I'll hold you
    Hold you once more, hold you once more
    I'm gonna hold you
    I'm gonna hold you, hold you
    Hold you, once again
    The road may be long (the road may be long, long, long, long, long, long)
    I'm gonna hold

    I wish that we never age so Jacob wouldn't age either that he remains beautifully this way and then let's stay as it is. Listening to this piece is like sitting at the death drive and everything else is still - the Big Real. I would listen to this piece only once and yes only once and think of this piece as a memory, being held once more as the past tense and only once ever being held this way so it lasts forever.
