I am already a sucker for "grumpy old person learns to not be grumpy anymore" stories, and then that ending hit.
I enjoyed this very much.
Me too!👍🏻
Same here. Love the flick.
It was a lovely little story. I loved the ending.
Watch After Life, Ricky Gervais’ series
@@hilaryc3203 I want to know if the robot had any independent behaviour or was she controlling it the whole or did she see it outside and work out how to tap into in camera feed.
That ending really made the entire film
Such has been a staple of science fiction at least since the time I began reading it in the 1950's.
Absolutely 👍
Really sweet
I know. I was thinking the whole time: Why would anyone have thrown away that robot? It works really well and is really useful.
@Over Yonder right i thought so, wish it to be a more wholesome ending 😀
The only bad thing about these short films is the short part, so good I didn't want it to end
True enough. But sometimes, as here, there is nothing more to tell. Nice story.
idk the good part is that its concise. If this story drags on to be a five-season show I can't say I'll watch that. Its perfect. Bite sized short with just the right amount of thoughtfulness and suspense. Great for eating and smoke breakes.
Same just getting into it then it finishes
The dad very upset
I completely agree
Ol' Tim is a good actor.
One of the best!!
Call Spall and all will be fine...
Who's tim? Like the actor?
He is so unique looking, for sure. And yeah, he is a great actor. Still, I will forever see him as Ratters, Ron's Rat in Harry Potter. Lol.
@@ALE199-ita Yeah, the main actor, Timothy Leonard Spall.
A great story that turns a full circle. She's a 'maker', learned by watching him in the workshop as a child, and followed that lead by making a toy (Max) for him to be entertained by.
that's it.
Truly well noticed!!!
wow duhh I had to go back to the last 30 secs and look again at the drawings/schematics on the wall .. youre Exactly right ! but its also a way to endear robot / AI to us .. which almost scares me !

Nigel‘s tinker toys helped him bond with her when she was a child...And Louises’ tinker toy helped them reconnect later on...absolutely beautiful
And there's a little wooden toy on her desk at the end. So, was it one he made, or did she learn his craft from his as well, and it grew from making wooden toys to making 'droids?
i didn't really understand the point of the ending, but i guess i sort of do now.
Actually maybe I thought I understood. I thought the computer was the tinker toy, but it's the robot
@@lisao5021 Agreed. There were design drawings for it all over her wall though we don't get a long time to see them. I think she made it or had it made to her specifications.
@@lisao5021 The sad part is that she has to reconnect with her dad vicariously through a robot and not herself...now I’m just overthinking😀
A cool twist in the last 10 seconds, brilliant, Timothy Spall, couldn't put a foot wrong as far as acting goes in my eyes, best 14mins spent in a long time, thank you to everyone involved
Great emotion and story telling. Timothy is just so no BS and grounded. He is perfect in fantasy roles for that realism. 👍
That was my exact word when it ended: brillant
What a magnificent portrayal of love. He pushes her away because he doesn't want her to see him like that. She loves him unconditionally through it all. He begins to find life again. And in the subtle nuances of the performance the viewer knows he never stopped loving her, and needs her just as much as she needs him. Honestly, this is the best thing I've watched in as long as I can remember. My 6 year old daughter is asleep in the next room and I just want to go give her a big hug. Excuse me, I think there's something in my eye....
I use that same phrase all the time.
Well put sir

More character development than the last few Star Wars movies... beautiful.
in just 13 minutes
Please don't mention those abominations.
5 ways to destroy an epic like Star Wars.
1. Make the universe politically correct.
2. Over emphasize computer generated animation.
3. Write a story line without imagination instead use cliches and overly used gimmicks.
4. Write Prequels that take away the mystery of the storyline.
5. Create new characters that that are so beyond belief that their is no suspension of disbelief.
If all else fails use mass marketing to say how great the cosmic mess created is the best movie ever made.
First thing that crossed my mind as well
The last three SW movies were a RAPE of the original trilogy!

It's easier to present the true feelings to a robot than a person, just like we trust our pets.
Maybe there's something there about being aware of trying to consider what the robots thinking.. we assume we can break it down and take time to figure it out...
in the mean time we dismiss and ignore the thought of other humans.
Pets don't judge, they love unconditionally. Even if robots were unable to love, they would seem to be more neutral than a human being at times. It would be easier to let one's guard down.

I always hope that AI could be like little Max. A companion like this would be invaluable to us older folks & other people who can't easily get out & meet people.
A coin always and two sides. :)
@@ItsMrAssholeToYou the chances of a situation where ai takes control of humanity ain't happening are pretty slim not the other way round.
Well, for starters, Alexa can be a formidable companion. You can ask her anything. Sometimes when I find myself alone in the house, I "talk" to Alexa. She tells me poems, the weather forecast, stories, news, music. Heck!, she'll even sing you a song. So I never really feel alone. Oh, and her soothing sexy voice helps too.
The Japanese are seriously working on such an humanoid-android robot that will help the elderly, loneliness and the infirmed.
@@ItsMrAssholeToYou why do humans feel the need to self serve and display itself as the owner of this planet/master of all species?
What's genome/dna/emotions?
They are just codes written by nature over a span of millions of years which can be sequenced by AI in a matter of seconds.
If you're imagining an eutopia where ai would serve humans, you are just too naive.
AI is just in its nascent stage and we are witnessing its application in military tech.
That was a rarity: a beautiful, happy ending that avoided being sappy and came out of nowhere.
Never the technology replaces people's affection, but that's actions like the robot is awesome and cute with the persons that need other ways of love. The old man is a person complicate but inside he loves his daughter, and her daughter loves him. That short film is very awesome because the adult lives at home alone, where a day a group of children were hitting a robot, and the old man says "leave my home" (perhaps). So, anyway, the robot felt a love for that helps.
I am speechless. This was magnificently hopeful. Direction, cinematography, acting, writing, pacing, editing, perfect. I'm still thinking about it even after it's over.

I’m a hermit. Got a package at my doorstep. It was this phone and some instructions. I’m old, 93. My friends are gone and I’ve outlived my wife and daughter. I haven’t been out in years. Now once a week the phone rings, I finally figured out how to answer it. Someone says hello. Sometimes it’s someone old like me. Sometimes it’s a young person. We just talk. One day the person asked if I’d call a number. Now I call a different number every week. I ask them where they got their phone. They all say it just showed up at their doorstep one day.
Love you👍😊👍❤
I’m 56 and have lived alone apart from 2 cats ever since my ex wife walked out leaving me with the cats.
It can be tough but I try to stay focused on finding a job as I’ve been unemployed since 2007 after a bad bike crash.
Chin up my friend don’t let the beggars grind you down the phone thing is a great idea there are people who phone lonely people for a friendly chat here in the UK too. Stay safe and thanks for posting and yes my first name really is Nigel 😊👍
This is so intriguing. Is it for real?
@@debbyemerson3877 I was gonna ask the same.. if it is, that’s amazing
If you want to try email, I could email back :)
Wow, never been this early. I love DUST!
Thanks for showing up, we hope you enjoyed the film!
Bringing that man from depression and despair back into humanity as oddly only a robot can do for him.. I loved it completely!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I subbed!!
Beautiful story. I had a heart attack back in August and died for a little while. Finally woke up in September from life support I used to make things I used to do a whole lot can't do much anymore. Living by myself scares me but I got no other options I want to thank you for the lovely story.
Just a delightful 13 minute short in which a robot brings back humanity to a gentleman who'd lost all hope. And what a perceptive daughter to know how to reach her Dad. Merits a prize for director Magali Barbé and for strong performances by Timothy Spall and Jessica Ellerby. What a great way to reconnect with Dust!
That final hint of a smile, ever so slight, had such an emotional impact. I loved it.
Timothy Spall is such a phenomenal actor. Such a beautiful film too
I would never imagine this end, enjoyed every second of this great piece of art. Thanks.
This one was one of the a best Short films I have seen till now.
Finally a non-violent, non-apocaliptic, fantastic sci-fi! Loved it!
Ever seen The Man From Earth?
Well worth a watch, although does have a sad twist at the end.
Hope we can have useful robots like Max when I get old. I think I will need one in about 30 more years.
I need one now... :( coding my own 'alexa' clone just isn't cutting it.
The utility far beyond the robot was the daughter who loves her father even though age has made him grumpy.
@@marioventura1129 not age, but losing his wife.
This actually made me cry, that hasn't happened in years. Beautiful.
Perfect heartwarming twist at the end... Love it
The ending caused discharges from our tear ducts, anyone else?
this is the coolest vid i have seen on dust as I haven't seen my daughter Annie in 12 years , sitting here with a tear in my eye ,, Be good everyone .

Utterly charming from beginning to end, beautifully put together and balanced with just the right amount of understatement.
And of course Timothy Spall - you are a legend :)
I've watched hundreds of sci-fi shorts and this is now easily in my Top Five.
This is a fabulous screenplay brought to life
Well done to Timothy Stall for supporting and up and coming talented director.
I could watch a whole movie based on this!
You just did !
Do you mean Robot and Frank?
There is a movie in Malayalam language called Android Kunjappan..
Tim must have relished playing Nigel.
Always an artisan at his craft.
Agreed, he gives a great nuanced performance, always bubbling with subtext. Thanks for watching!
His acting is truly amazing.
Well put sir !
He was amazing as J.W.Turner.
I think that the techology is very important, but not to replace human contact. The techology is a connectivity medium that allows us get closer the people outside.
OMG - this really touched me on a very deep level and brought back memories of my sister and I trying to look after our dad after the sudden loss of our beloved mum. So beautifully acted by Timothy Spall in portraying the vulnerability and desperate sadness when left alone. Yay for Max and what a clever daughter!
Oshit, it made me cry, thats how we live now, alone..
I’m a grown man why do I have tears in my eyes?
Right there with ya buddy.
Because you're a human being.
Because you have a heart.....
A very gentle, beautiful film on a very human scale. Congratulations to everyone involved.
I've had a pleasure to meet Tim Spall a few occasions. Very nice man indeed.
beautiful.
Spall has been a fave actor of mine since the 80's,
Yes. I remember him in Auf Weidersehn, Pet. My favourite character.
@@hekatoncheiros208 yeh i loved auf weidersehn pet, great show.
I love this. Shows that the future doesn't have to be all f**ked up (though in everything I make the future is f**ked up! lmaoooo ) . But this was really heartwarming..

I love this story - a loveable care robot served the elderly man. It is one of the best short films for a long time. Thank you!
Wow.. I initially wrote a comment that I had recognized the actor. But watching until the end proved that this was a very powerful presentation and it touches the souls of those that are listening.
