Hard to believe this is nearly 100 years old. All the actors have long gone. Love these old movies. So thankful they are being preserved. Thanks for sharing!

Arsenic is naturally present in water that people drink daily with no ill effects. They become immune to a small amount. Cyanide is more dangerous. You will find cyanide in bitter almonds used to make almond extract. Bitter almonds must be heat treated to be safe enough for extracts used in baking, etc. Also in the seeds of some common fruits such as apples and plums. My Mom and I ate the peeled seeds regularly. Again, no ill effects.

Same here, some unique and surprisingly high quality.
And one might say that the subject matter is "advanced" for the 1930s. But I suppose that was at least partly the reason for the Hayes (decency) Code.

This movie made so many years ago, yet, it was so real it could have been filmed a year ago. So powerful that young girl's part., It just made me cry for her and for the second girl too. I hope the young girls of 2022 will see this movie
I love the wallpapered walls back then. We always wallpapered our houses back then. It's so cozy and romantic with the fireplace and candle light.💕
Patricia, My guess is that wallpaper fell out of favor because of its difficulty of application. Much harder to apply than paint, cannot really be repaired, and almost impossible to remove cleanly.
I love the 30s wallpapers also. I am going to get my sitting room and bedroom papered 30s style in the near future. I hate plain white walls- cold looking and boring.
@@mabel8179 I too love Wallpaper. White or plain painting is depressing. Wallpaper is like bring the outside inside. Not like being in a box. Also, like beautiful antiques. Even in the 60's-70's had pretty artificial flowers sitting around. Don't see that anymore either. The Dresses are prettier than what is worn at the OCARS today.

I rent an apartment, and can't use wallpaper. So I found some really nice fabrics, took a staple gun and transformed a couple of rooms! My favorite is in the bedroom, a pale green damask with a dark green design of leaves and vines. So relaxing.

Nothing better!! I’ve been binge watching movies from the 20s thru the 40s. I’ve become very fond of Bette Davis, from one of her first roles in ‘the Bad Sister”. This movie looks great, which I’m watching now. I just ❤ these movies!!
THE ACTING HERE IN THE FIRST TEN MINUTES BLOWS AWAY THE CRAP OF TODAY -immortailized in celluloid ------EVERYONE OF THESE FILMS THE ACTORS GAVe IT 110% AS IF IT WAS THEir last film or chance ..i also think the scriptwriters were levels above todays writers they simply had a more immense vocabulary back then garnered from all the reading people did back then
It's not as though anything prevents one from reading today; these were the pre "fluoride in the water" days stateside.

A lot of these older films are in the "pretty good" range. This one was very good. Very good actors all around. The blonde (Sheila Compton) was excellent. Thank you for ANOTHER evening's entertainment!

A very enjoyable old classic and what fabulous outfits! I loved the car chase as those heavy vehicles must have been very difficult to manoeuvre with no power steering! Thank you for uploading.
My first car was a 1953 Mercury with no power steering or brakes or power anything else. I bought it in 1964. Driving it was good exercise and fun!
Wow l didn't think about that. I owned at least 3 different 64 Chevy's but they all had power steering. I did however try to drive a car my sister was going to buy back to the dealership. Man was that ever a tug of war.
The story is realistic and the acting excellent.
You just cannot know how much this channel helps. I love these movies. What a time, what an era...

Some people on here keep saying that the actors of that era were more classy than they are now. Well they did dress a lot better. However, most of them married several times, had affairs and had drink problems. There was also something know as the casting couch. There were a lot of scandals in Hollywood back in the day.

Those dresses were very form-fitting. They were styled for very slim women that had small hips and bust.

A drama. Two excellent camera shots. The framing of Warner thru the limo window was fabulous work. For the technology level of this time, the film was excellent. The actors did their personas well. This scenario, Madame Bovary, was used over and over in films.
"Loosely" based on MADAME BOVARY is really stretching it - take a look at the Vincent Minnelli version, which is excellent. But Lila Lee was lovely, and it's always fun to see H.B. Warner.
I am a huge Madame Bovary fan and this film had many similarities. Excellent film. Thank you. 🌸
How and where does she resemble Madame Bovary, who married an older, unsuccessful small town country doctor (the operation on the club foot) ? Madame Bovary wanted more out of life. This woman, the gardeners' daughter, is surrounded by an arrogant and rude community.
This movie was very slow, and I didn't see any similarities between this and Madame Bovary-except for the cigarette case and the debts. But it was meant to be a drama about morality and it worked on that level. Thanks for uploading.
I just adored watching H.B. Warner in any of his films. He was so debonair, such class, and his diction (I think back almost 100 years ago they called it elocution! See? Even that word sounds classier!).
I remember being so delighted and surprised when I saw his “cameo” with Gloria Swanson, Anna Q. Nilsson and Buster Keaton! It was really crazy to my sister (who’s NOT into old films at all!) when I got so excited at seeing them and flipped their names off so fast, you’d have thought they all just starred in a big Box Office draw that year! 😂😘♥️💕🙋♀️
Speaking of which, “Hollywood” will never be what it was beginning in the Silent Era and steaming blockbusters straight through the 40’s. I often think Hollywood just began to sleep a bit starting in the 60’s. Oh, of course there were the greats of that time......The Sound of Music, Dr. Zhivago, Cape Fear, The Graduate, etc......but something of that beautiful sparkle and aura which caused Hollywood to be called “Tinseltown” was almost gone. It always seemed to me that Our Marilyn took it with her when she was murdered.
So I just keep watching the “oldies” and allowing myself to wander through the pictures I’ve made up in my mind....like what huge stars’ dressing rooms (really small houses for many!), The love matches of the day ( such as Marian Davies and “Pops”), Tracy and Hepburn (I choose to believe they were both straight and much in love), the great Madame Stanwyck, who continued working well into what others call “the golden years”.....she was almost 60 yo when she STARTED working in The Big Valley and 80 yo when she starred in The Thornbirds.
They just don’t make ‘me like that anymore! And so I thank The Lord God for videotapes. 😉👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🌹🙏🕊✝️🙋♀️💕💜🕎
I JUST LOVE THESE OLD MOVIES FOR THE BEAUTIFUL OLD CARS THEY HAD, WHAT IT WOULD BE LIKE TO DRIVE ONE.
I enjoy these for the women's fashions and the furniture. But wow, those cars were works of art.
They also had the clothes. Ya could dress up and go for a drive!
99.99% of Americans today would have no idea how to start much less drive one of those.
I enjoy looking at the kitchen's and the clothes.
Compared to today's cars, they are difficult. No automatic anything!

Fine drama with outstanding cast. Sheila was quite the player but dumb as a rock. Then again, Lyle Talbot, clueless Lyle Talbot, married within his intellect, you might say. I mean, he didn't have a clue, even after she told him he couldn't make proper love to her.
Watch H.B. Warner in another fine movie: "5 Star Final," starring Eddie G. Terrific movie. I guarantee you'll like it.

HB Warner was a quality actor for many years, working mostly with Cecil B DeMille from the 20's through the 50's. He did have leads in this film and in DeMille's 1927 version of "King of Kings", but mostly is known for supporting roles.

Lila Lee played the role of Carmen in the 1922 Blood and Sand with Rudolph Valentino.
Fascinating listening to this soundtrack which is very primative with changes in sound for each picture edit. I guess mixing was not common yet. The sound quality and the transfer are great.
The visual was far ahead of sound until the late 30s ( Gone With The Wind, Wizard Of Oz, etc)
Some of the older films are not restored properly. This one is. Don't miss it!
I just love the old movies The actors and actresses were so ciassy back then.
Just compare today's rubbish with Irene Dunne,Cary Grant,Ginger Rogers,Joan Blondell and William Powell!!!

You can see the "Code" beginning to take effect with this film: twin beds, not one kiss, no one seen changing clothes, etc. This film was released in 1932, and the Code became influential in 1930, with strict adherence taking hold in 1934. To call this "Pre-Code," is skating on the edge a bit.
This is pre-code. The producers of movies were reluctant to give up their freedom. In fact movies made a year before pre-code were not rereleased after the code. Several things in this would be dealt with much differently after the code. Suicide for instance, badies deserved their cumupance but by God not through suicide. Later only good people commited suicide to primarily save someone else.
The mother's insult just inside minute 39 cracked me up laughing. Wow! Great stuff !

When I was trying to figure out why that was an insult, I was thinking maybe because she was so much younger and lower on the social ladder than him, it was being suggested she was a child, immature, and unable to talk about anything more intelligent than a lightbulb.
Very loosely based-on. How many will take the trouble to read that wonderful novel? It is better than 99.9% of what is written today.

This movie was stirring for some reason, I liked it! I must admit I would have loved to know what was in the letter ✉ a real who done ✔ it. When I watch these old films I am always amazed at the level of opulence in clothing. Interior design

To me, of Human Bondage was REALLY PRE-CODE which by today's standards was extremely mild! Great movie from the Silver Screen. 😊

Ya gotta see him in "Five Star Final," with Eddie G and Marian Marsh - among others. He plays Marian's father. He's great, but the whole cast was. 1932 movie.

@@kpflo123 Kevin, thank you for referring to Dodsworth movie! I just done watching it. I guess Ruth was very good in that movie, because I grew hating her. Well, not an actress but the character. 😊 Another surprise in that film was to discover Maria Uspenskaya, who played old baronesse. I did not know of her before. I'm Russian and also watch old Russian movies. So she was also one of those left to America after revolution, and made it quiet well...
I could not find movie Five Star Final yet. But will keep in mind to check it out when available.

I do NOT want to give anything away, but there is maturity in terms of years, and maturity in terms of outlook on life and understanding of reality/mental maturity. There is a huge difference. With mental maturity comes the understanding and acceptance of reality. When a person is able to accept reality, that person can have a happy and successful life.

Sheila was quite detestable. An ingrate, a user and an adulteress. Her incessant crying was really tiresome and transparent. Crocodile tears. Good movie though, thanks mate.
Joyce Compton was doing/behaving just as the writers and director instructed. They wanted her bad "qualities" to far outweigh her good ones.

More Betty Boop than Madame Bovary. Except that Betty Boop was really innocent and clueless. Madame Bovary knowingly made a choice. The problem for both Madame Bovary and Sheila was money. Hard to describe or explain.
