What I love about this guy is he plays for the music. He doesn’t overdo it, he just plays what suits the song. He has so much in his locker and every now and again he gives us a hint of what he’s capable of, and it’s just stunning!

Nightwish fans dont know how lucky they are to have Kai in the band. His job at Wintersun is wonderful.

Comparison doesn't mean to not appreciate. At least not for me. I like Jukka on "his" songs more than Kai. But I am sure I would miss Kai when Jukka played Kais songs. Even if they'd play exactly the same. There is no better or worse. It's just about style and taste.
Still great thing about Kai is that he plays on Jukkas songs what Jukka played and doesn't change too much. That tells what a great musician Kai is.

Jukka has officially announced he will not be returning to nightwish as the bands official drummer. Kai has assumed the role of Nightwish's full time official drummer. Jukka, your stage presence and power will be missed. Kai, your skill and precision on the skins has been and will continue to be phenomenal. Although you've already been working with the band for 4 yrs, I think it's time we as fans officially welcome you to Nightwish.

I feel like the drummers are the most under appreciated band members..
They keep the pace balance and drag the songs along, without them there is no band.
Actually, I would not be suprised if Nightwish used click tracks :-) The music is quite complex, there are times when drums are not playing, there are times where sound effects are triggered, I think the timing is not driven by the drummer.
@@talaniel They use a click track and a backing track via Pro Tools. Especially in songs like this one that's the only option. It's the only way to blend in the orchestra and the backing vocals. The same track is also used to trigger visual effects. As for the importance of drummers, every band member is very important. I'm a drummer myself and for me the bass player is very important. All that matters is how you perform as a band.
Nope, music is soulless without the bass guitar. It's the backbone of every band. But drums add to what they lack.
Band members do appreciate their drummers. Its the fans and the media who don't.

Wow, dat articulation of the ghost notes in the verses. I love the subtle textural stuff Kai does while keeping the feel of a simple groove constant.

How about Lars Ulrich? He plays with such a passion that he forgots sometimes to play doublebass and forgots whats The songs tempo. Sometimes hes so exited that he forgets what Song he is playing and starts to hit The china crash constantly.
I don't care how old this video is; what a joy to be able to watch Kai perform from his perspective. I love his tuning and style. We have had only the best drummers playing in NightWish! Super treat!

Kai is a world class drummer! Reminds me Ian Paice a bit. Fluid and a very smooth style. For non drummers that’s a huge compliment. I liked his work in Wintersun too. He is obviously different than Jukka but I’m not sure we would want a clone. This adds a different flavor and both guys are kick ass!! Nightwish has it covered either way!
He's god of the drums... I can't understand how he can move every part of his body to another direction in the same time so precisely... mindblowing.

Sorry for answering to such an old post, but this must be the most ignorant post I've seen regarding Kai. If Kai ain't that good, then am eager to hear your take on who are. At this level it seems more like really small margins and nuances to me (differences between the drummers) :)
Henri Ek Well I agree that lot is personal taste. As said Kai is good, no question and I did not argue about that. I like to listen to Nightwish and hear him playing also on stage. But I was not stating that he is the best as one post did. There are drummers out there who easily can compare with him such as: Marco Minneman, Thomas Lang, Mike Mangini, Dennis Chambers, Danny Carey, Vinnie Colaiuta just to name a few.
Let the "Drums" do the talking.. words cannot describe such superb drumming!!! 👌👌👍😯👏👏

Amazing! Jukka was the reason i loved drumms and started playing, but Kai seems to have the same passion and spirit with a more complex and innovating plays! Well done Nightwish! With or sadly without Jukka, you will always rock my heart with your songs! Keep up!

Kai is a great guy! I met him and the others in Nightwish before a show in Pittsburgh, PA on the 2nd leg of their US Tour on 24 February 2016. Was an amazing experience! I've even had the pleasure to chat with him a couple times since then! Very nice and a hell of a drummer. I do hope Jukka gets himself rested and back with the band. But it's nice knowing someone like Kai can step in and do a more than capable job!

Reminds me of the unbelievable night on 12.04.2016. One of my best nights in Beijing!!!
Kai and Jukka are amazing in their own rights. Each have a different playing style which makes them unique. Jukka was like a badass pirate bandit with a drumset and Kai is like the wise old teacher that is avenging Jukka after insomnia took him from the world (not literally, just a figure of speech). Fun fact: Jukka learned how to play drums from Kai.
Fascinatiing to watch. Kai was really getting into it towards the end. It's also nice to see him obviously enjoying himself. His hand speed at the finale is impressive.
Thought 'This going to be boring' when clicked the link. Have never been wrong more. The job Kai does is fantastic and so underrated.
Kai is a freakin machine! His meter is the best I've ever seen. But, noting against Kai, but, I miss Jukka's playing.

they controll them just at the same time - like you do use mouse and keyboard at the same time ;) it is a learned squence
james grames its basically a very fast serial management that appears to be parallelized. You need to work on it but it becomes subconscious eventually

Nice to see all the technical stuff that usually is drowning in all the orchestral arrangements. Those ghost strokes were very nice. I heard he added quite a few details of his own to the original drum parts.

What physical overdrives a drummer has to expose, it's un-imaginable...night after night. And Kai hasn't even got the time to see and absorb beautiful Lady Floor, bringing her un-imaginable high qualities to the stage!

I really love Jukkas playing but Kai is also the main. His fills, use of cymbals, db triplets and those super technical fills at the end are incredible
