As a huge fan of Gallifrey, one of the best Doctor Who spinoffs ever made, I had high expectations for this set. So I was amazed by the fact that it actually exceeded them. Gallifrey: Time War is an absolute must-listen, not just for fans of Gallifrey, but anyone who wants to know more about the Time War, or even loves great drama. I can't wait until volume two is released.
My only concerns is that much like the Clone Wars in Star Wars, hearing the actual stories about this mythological event will just never compare to the shadow and dread those terms cast on me from only my knowledge of the show.
@@nickandres7829 Yeah, I definitely understand that. I think Big Finish have done a pretty solid job with the Time War overall, especially the Eighth Doctor stories. Even as an outsider, the first episode alone gives a strong impression of how destructive and dangerous a war across time can really be to both the Doctor and his friends.

I used to have such a crush on Lalla Ward. Though as a schoolboy from the Eighties, I imagine she was a little out of my league. Also, I lived nowhere near a quarry and she seemed to spend a lot of time in them, so I doubt we would have ever met.

We really need to get Braxiatel into the TV series proper. Miles Richardson is so great as the character an it's not as if the Braxiatel Collection hasn't been mentioned in the series before.

Ace is my favourite companion ever- if you've not watched any of her stories, I highly recommend Remembrance of the Daleks, Curse of Fenric and Survival

Danochy The Greatest Show in the Galaxy is very good too. The Happiness Patrol and Ghost Light are both divisive stories-some fans don't like them, but I love them!
Scratch that, I've seen the Greatest Show too, haha. Managed to catch them when they were broadcast in my country for the 30th anniversary. I also have the Brigadier's comeback episode on DVD which I have yet to watch.

This was so good. This is the first gallifrey stories I have listened to. But i love it so much. And anything with the Master is just gold.
toast99bubbles I do plan on going back and getting more of the Gallifry stories. There are just so many other ones I want to get first. I think the dark eye series will be next for me. I have only started buying big finish stuff a few months ago.

She isn't a time Lord, she's only a Gallifreyan and never completely her time at the academy, given how she was born naturally and not loom born, she was never going to achieve the title and won't be able to regenerate.

Adam Whiteman besides, this is set very near the beginning of the war and the Doctor is referenced as not helping at the moment implying that this is during the Eighth Doctor's time
Adam Whiteman no he doesn’t appear in this series as it’s a spinoff focusing on Gallifrey. It’s set in the very early days of the Time War so the War Doctor isn’t even around at that point

As Epic as this sounds, it's truly a shame that they couldn't make this while John Hurt was still with us. The War Doctor in this would have been.. well, it would have been a true delight.

And yes, it is focusing on Galifrey, but he could have popped in once in a while, not a full episode, maybe a cameo, that's all.
Time 8th this box set seems to predate the War Doctor as there's a direct comment about the Doctor not getting involved.

Xhodan Xeus it’s not an audio book. An audio book only has one person reading it. A full cast audio drama on the other hand has multiple actors performing it
I don't think they realize that Derek Jacobi isn't the War Master since he said in Utopia he was found as a small boy with the fob watch, so the War Master was an incarnation before Derek Jacobi
They did make a box set titled "The War Master: Only The Good" explaining that.
James B. Russell the Master used the Chameleon Arch to turn into a human baby. Big Finish were well aware of this and had thought of it before consulting Russel T Davies
James B. Russell Big Finish realised that. They explained it in the War Master boxset. He used the Chameleon arch to turn into a human baby when he ran away to the end of the universe

The earliest Gallifrey stories are really cheap and really brilliant, so if you don't want to purchase the Time War just yet, you can start with the earlier seasons. If you do want to purchase the Time War, it's a good jumping on point.

It's already out. Audio adventures. In terms of scale pretty massive, though audio means no special effects required.
The Gallifrey series handles the political side of the Timelords and this is no exception.

4 volumes of The War Doctor with John Hurt.
1 volume (and more coming) of The Eighth Doctor Time War.
1 volume (and probably more coming) of The War Master.

This Big Finish is missing one unique important thing. The Late Sir John Hurt.
Rabbit Rainbow it is the Time War and it’s called “Doctor Who”. As Hurt is no longer with us. They should have at least McGann to make a appearance to really tie in to add the disgust he feels about the Time War until his end.
Kam Zeng this is Gallifrey, not Doctor Who. It's a separate Big Finish audio series. As mentioned above the War Doctor has appeared in four box sets amounting to sixteen episodes, plus the first of the 8th Doctor Time War box sets is out and a War Master box set.
I don't understand how Romana (Lalla Ward) can be in this as she was and still is in E-space.
Read up on the lore. She's been in the Gallifrey audio series for around fourteen years now, Earth-time.

Yes, Big Finish is canon, Eight's last words in Night Of The Doctor made it so when he mentions his companions
"Charley, C'rizz, Lucie, Tamsin, Molly, Friends companions i've known i salute you"
Nothing is odfivially canon except the TV shows, so you sort of have to craft your own. While Eight mentioned his companions in 'Night of the Doctor' it just confirms their existence, nothing else.

A lot happened to Romana after E-Space. There was the Daleks' use of the Apocalypse Element, the Anti-Time crisis, Zagreus, the Timeonic Fusion Device, the Free Time Terrorist Group, Imperiatrix Pandora, and etc.

That doesnt mean diddly zip nothing as Moffat used a few foundations of those scripts of the audiodramas/books during his run for other doctors then the "originals" had. Not shown, not happend and of no consequence when new shows are made.
Notice how I avoid mention the extended Star Wars Universe debacle as a reason for why the audiodramas/books are not cannon.
What I am gonna mention thou are the non cannon movies not made by BBC itself thou as an example.
The 4 small BBC PC games of series 5 are the only non show material that are cannon. So far.

And that was the 2nd appearance of both the 8th (last?) and the WarDoctor(2nd out of 3).
Never before or after have a single audio drama char been mentioned.
Else:
Never have an existing audio drama story been referenced in BBC´s Doctor Who.
(Later ones have been produced to to fit the inshow reference thou have happend) many many times.
What happens is:
A rewritten version of an Audio drama / "normal" book pops up with uneven intervalls in BBC´s Doctor Who.
=Nothing non BBC produced Doctor Who is cannon.

The ONLY non televised thing thats part of the cannon is the series 5; 4 tiny PC games.

hey, maybe that is not the best place to ask such a question but I googled it and couldn't find the answer, and I am not a native speaker. Why do we say THE Doctor, not just Doctor? It is not a title in this case, it is his name.... I know it's not (presumably) his REAL name, but he acts as if is. To me, it's like saying the Amy, the Rose, the Rory... Just someone explain it to me, please. Thanks in advance.
