  • After removing the engine from the car and disassembling everything, it is time to see what failed inside the engine. We going to check the most common issue with this engines aka the main bearings and the crankshaft. We have found some other issues during the job, like oil nozzle breakage, failed camshafts journals + caps and so on. In this video we going to take a look, what is happening inside the oil pump / vacuum pump.

@@davehewisonphoto Yeap, one of those scenarios for sure! bearings will go only when there is no oil between the crankshaft and road bearings, and this will happen when the oil is still not to the working temperature and the engine is being pushed hard. I think the main problem was a bended crankshaft, I think also this type of "lighter" crank with 4 counterweights was more prone to fail than the old one with 8 counterweights, the crank of the n57d30c m50d should be the best and the price is the same

I've seen the pressure relief valve in those pumps stick open, venting the majority of the oil into the sump and little to the lubrication system. There's enough pressure normally to cope with that piston spray nozzle being broken I'd say, but the only way to test the pump is by submersing the oil pickup in a container of oil and spinning it anti clockwise with a T45 socket in a battery drill. You should see oil coming from the correct opening on the pump, if it just sprays out the vent hole it's the pressure relief.
Know for sure if I bought a n57 engine, I'd probably fit a new oil pump and do a number of short oil changes to give the engine it's best chance. You can remove the sump on these after removing the gearbox and change the pump wiith the engine in situ, so not the worst job.

Hi been watching your videos for quite some time now and have to say i am very impressed by your work. I have one question tho. Can the oil pumps on these make noise or are they submerged in oil to the point it is almost imposible? I bought my 330d lci 245hp a month ago, the engine was refurbished by the main dealer 20k km ago (i know what was done since i work as a painter there. I have been noticing a bit of a rattle lately on cold starts. All the chains, sprockets, tensioners and guides are new along with all the crank and main bearings. The oil pump was checked and was fine so they didnt replace it. No oil pressure lights no knocking noises, the vaccum pump also maintains more than -1 bar of vaccum.
