  • Im playing, tracking some songs with and rating all of the BFD Player expansions. Which ones made the grade (in my opinion), and which ones are most useful? Let's find out...
    Reviewing BFD Player expansions, on electronic drums (Roland TD17kv), including expansions:
    London 70's · Dark Mahogany · Jazz Sticks · Jazz Brushes · Americana Sticks · Americana Brushes · Dark Copper
    There is also a Vintage Rock expansion, but you can see my video on BFD Player 1.2 to see all about that one.
    I play 6 song segments in this video! My personal record.

    Great video dude! It's nice to have them all in one video to hear. BFD's website isn't the greatest to try to compare and contrast; this is way more convenient 🤘

    Nice work as always! It is hard to go past the london 70's expansion for me. It's a huge sounding kit and really pleased that they included the Black Oyster 402 instead of the 400 that was the matching snare for the BFD3 library as it is more to my taste. I also like the Q snare with the dark mahogany expansion. I have a bit of a frankenkit preset with the London paiste cymbals, the free kit toms and the Mahogany Q snare which match nicely though I've found that not all the kit pieces work well together. I mainly just use the original mixes, though I like a couple of the jazz sticks presets and it is a cool sounding kit otherwise. It is possible to work around the lack of having a midi learn function in that it is possible to duplicate the midi preset files, edit them and the and rename them to match your own mapping. Bit of a pain at this stage but I like now that I can open it up standalone and start playing straight away rather than via a DAW.

      yes! I had to do something similar for MIDI preset stuff. You sound like you do a lot of the same kind of stuff I do. Great choices, by the way, for your frankenkit. That q snare is powerful indeed. But as you said -- the london 70s was so nice sounding.

      Oohh it felt so good to play it live. Any of the presets, but especially the Levee preset, you start doing a bonham-type feel and it just sounds so nice, to my ears anyway.

    As a BFD3 user, gotta say i love it.
    I hope we can get some BFD3 expansions for BFD Player such as: Crush, Black Album, modern Drummer snare select, wooden snares, Metal snares, modern retro.
    The only problem, besides the midi learn function, is that you cannot add cymbals or toms. Your are limited to the amount of cymbals and toms the kit already have.
    I hope they update this because, in my opinion, this is way better than Toontrack and many other drum software.
    I’ve spent a lot of money in libraries that never felt like “i really like this one, this is the one i’ll use from now on”. BFD is the only one that delivers. It’s amazing.
    I use dark Farm every single day and it’s the best of all.
    Now i’m using the BFD player because it’s more ready to go but if you want to créate presets, find new sounds, BFD3 is second to none.
    Everything is sampled really well.

      yo nacho! Yes, I know you love BFD3 and I do too -- which is why I really enjoy these releases. But yes, they sorely need to update a few things in this...but perhaps thats why they are priced lower. I dont know.

      @@eDrumsandVSTs another thing, there’s no crosstick midi articulation. I only get the rim shot.

      @eDrumsandVSTs I hope they do a midi learn right now I'm using notemapper but I haven't been able to figure out the hi hat so I'm forced to use a different vst for the hat lol

    • @eDrumsandVSTs
      @eDrumsandVSTs  Před měsícem

      @@wildbillrocking Understood! There is a techie way to adjust the hihat, though its a bit of a pain. All of the presets (midi mapping presets I mean) are actually files in one of the BFD Player directories. You can edit them, and the hihat openess and stuff is at the bottom. Although, FYI, if you cant find a midi preset that at least gets you CLOSE, it may be difficult. Another option is to open Reaper (or whatever DAW)'s virtual keyboard and pluck keys and make a note of each key for each stage of openness. Then use my hihat tool in my hihat video a while back.
      But yes, its very involved -- just giving you options IF you want to proceed with some ideas. They do know people are requesting midi learn functionality!

      Thanks for watching Joe! I really liked Vintage rock, and you can see that one in my BFD Player version 1.2 video I did a couple months ago. but after getting and hearing London 70s, which has some great Bonham and sabbath-esque sounds, it has become my favorite. But Vintage Rock had some great dry sounds and more of a standard vintage rock and vintage funk thing going on, which is great as well. London 70s is like the harder rock version i suppose.

    BFD Player's closed hihat sounds don't automatically choke the open hihat sounds. It requires you to send an aftertouch message, trigger a closed hihat with a velocity that's larger than the triggered open hihat, or play the foot pedal (or the separate choke key). This is really annoying for keyboard drummers. 😔

      @@eDrumsandVSTs No problem! The ones that I've used so far (Addictive Drums 1&2, EZDrummer 2, MINDst Drums [bought this after watching your video on this 👍🏽😎], SSD5.5, Studio Drummer, MODO Drum, plus others that I can't recall unfortunately) don't have this problem though. BFD Player is so far the only one that I've tried that has this issue which is such a shame since it sounds really good 🙁 I sure hope that it's just a bug, or if it is intentional, I hope that they'll provide a switch to toggle "keyboard mode" or something. Right now you can't even choose a specific channel within the software (omni by default), I hope they'll keep improving it, I would love to grab the rest of the expansion packs if they do!

      @@clines.alabat Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I think I have played sooo many that dont seem to do this, that I forgot the ones that do, and I appreciate you mentioning those here. You are coming at this from a keyboard drummer's perspective and I appreciate your input, because I am definitely trying to reach all users of drum samples, not just edrummers. So thanks again for this.

    I got the free version and I thought it was just ok. Are the expansions better than the free BFD player?

    • @eDrumsandVSTs
      @eDrumsandVSTs  Před 2 měsíci

      If you are totally unimpressed with the free BFD Player, you might like them, or you might not love the expansions. I think the true value lies not in the presets but if you were to part it out and process the drums themselves. But thats just my opinion as someone who is listening for as much realism as I can hear. You might want more instant polished sounds.
