- Gregory Alan Isakov is a Singer/Songwriter living on his ranch in Colorado. His latest record 'The Weatherman' was released in 2013. His folk-music songs are both fragile and strong, packed with beautiful melodies and great lyrics. We met him a few days ago in Cologne on his European tour together with Steve Varney on banjo on a sunny afternoon. This one is off the 2007 record "That Sea, The Gambler" and it's called "The Stable Song".

Cardinal Sessions was founded in the summer of 2010. They challenge the classic music video and try to replace impersonal footage with immediate and emotional snapshots.
Bands from all over the world with their different genres present their songs reduced to the essence of the musical spectrum - only vocals and unplugged instruments. Due to the spontaneous live-aspect and the approach to record every song without any additional rehearsal, songs emerge that often sound significantly different to their album versions.
We film on locations that the musicians mostly choose by themselves: remote places, frequented streets, parks, woods, fields, bars; nothing is impossible. We have accomplished our goal if the location fits well to the background of the music we and the artists want to present. But our most important purpose is that there are no borders: we film everything that we like, no matter how popular, famous or also unknown a band might be. It is still important for us to support local talents and it will always stay part of our concept.
The Cardinal Sessions team can also be booked: for example to film short documentaries of album recordings, studio recordings or live concert moments that you want to capture.

The ballroom thieves
Mandolin Orange!
Ballroom thieves!! cover of hymn 101 or only lonely
Played this song for a dear friend while camping a few weeks before he unexpectedly passed. He said "that's a mighty pleasant song"....I agree.
Ron P wow rip to your friend
Sorry for your loss....I hope you keep his memory alive, and I hope you keep camping
You could play this on my death bed and I’d be cool with it. Though I’d want to toss in my mando licks lol
Sorry about your friend...fine song to choose for him
So sorry for your loss. That is terrible news😥😥
“I cursed and I cried but now I know”
Says so much with so little
That line is so significant to me
This song is Truly a gift from God. Somone said that this song was the best song made, well everytime I listen to this, I believe it more and more. Thank you Gregory Alan
For someone who has only experienced this earth for 40 years this guy taps into a vibration as old as the concept of time itself. This could be played anywhere on the planet and resonate with anyone who hears it. It is equally tranquil and a little painful combined with a fragile sense of hope. Truly beautiful.
Aptly said 😇 ❤️
your comment is equally tranquil
Very comforting at 62.
Yes I just love this song,so beautiful ❤️
"I threw stones at the stars, but the whole sky fell" - probably my favourite Gregory Alan Isakov lyric
+Happy_Killmore I love it dearly as well
Same
Happy_Killmore me too!!
What does it mean though.
He was ambitious (Shooting for the stars) so he pursued fame and fortune. After accomplishing his goals, he realizes that material rewards aren't as important as he once thought. He misses his life on the farm and all of its simple beauties.
He later says "Turn me back into that wild haired gale," and "Turn these diamonds straight back into coal," meaning he would trade it all to go back in time and be that boy on the farm again.
At least that's how I see it!
This song played in a beach restaurant when I was with my wife and I remember everything it was so beautiful. We got pregnant soon after and now I want to learn guitar so I can sing this to my baby girl. She was two days old and crying and she listened to me sing the whole thing despite my happy tears. Great song.
Yeah, just wait until it becomes real for you
That’s amazing man, type of goals I want later in life
Thanks Peanut Butter Falcon movie for show me this masterpiece, such a beautiful song
I love that banjo.
me too
People are just casually walking by while they play. Lucky lucky people
"Remember when our songs were just like prayers" Great stuff. Shout out to Steve Varney the banjo player.
Yeah that banjo just adds so much character in Gregory’s songs.
Hats off to the amazing vocal harmonies from him too.
The man can sing and that banjo has great tone.
You know that feeling when you have been inside all day and as you walk outside and feel the warmth of the sun and the cool breeze across your face, that’s how this song makes me feel.
that is a beautiful analogy!
Yes !!!!!!! 💯 can’t stop listening !!!
It is like that😊
I have been singing this song around the house so much I caught my 6 year old son singing..."Ring like silver ring like gold".
Your 6 year old is now 13.
I hope they're still singing.
:)
Damn. I love this song. It hurts me in that inarticulable way that good art does.
Oh it damn sure hurts. It's supposed to.
Proud to call him my neighbor, I listen to this song daily.
wow really?!
That's insane, these guys are fantastic!!!
can i be your neighbor?
how much for your house?
Can I come see ya today and holler at ur neighbor
This song makes me ache for a world I haven’t met yet.
Sometimes you listen to a song for the first time and then wonder how it could be that you didn't know it before.
This song is one of them.
"I threw stones at the stars but the whole sky fell" What a BRILLIANT line. OMG. Fantastic tune. love it.
My goodness, that banjo is beautiful.✌️
Gregory alan isakov is the perfect mix of poetry and music. Relaxing and exllerating at the same time.
"And I ached for my heart like some tin man." Powerful stuff.
this
+S Wilson I sing that line to myself because I swear it's me he's talking about..
S Wilson my favorite lyric of all time
the heart that you have been listening to.....
What does that mean? Im kinda assuming that by tin man he means like a homeless man? Like I ached for my heart like some homeless man? Cause if thats it then it does surely hurt.. cant even imagine the life a homeless man is going through
I could listen to the song forever. So riveting.
I can listen to Gregory under any circumstance. He brings me constant deliverance.
Remember when our songs were just like prayers
Like gospel hymns that you called in the air
Come down, come down sweet reverence
Unto my simple house and ring
And ring
Ring like silver, ring like gold
Ring out those ghosts on the Ohio
Ring like clear day wedding bells
Were we the belly of the beast or the sword that fell
We'll never tell
Come to me clear and cold on some sea
Watch the world spinning waves, like that machine
Now I've been crazy couldn't you tell
I threw stones at the stars, but the whole sky fell
Now I'm covered up in straw, belly up on the table
Well I drank and sang, and passed in the stable
That tall grass grows high and brown
Well I dragged you straight in the muddy ground
And you sent me back to where I roam
Well I cursed and I cried, but now I know
Now I know
And I ran back to that hollow again
The moon was just a sliver back then
And I ached for my heart like some tin man
When it came oh it beat and it boiled and it rang
Oh it's ringing
Ring like crazy, ring like hell
Turn me back into that wild haired gale
Ring like silver, ring like gold
Turn these diamonds straight back into coal
I love Gregory but I want to give love to the Banjo player. Watching him play slow banjo to his own voice and Gregorys was beautiful.
He is soooooooo handsome.
They*** are so handsome. 😍
How is it that people are just walking by and not even noticing this beauty?
Some people see no value in music....shame...I'd hate to see what they value if not this...
+LifoNine the ones who are here are the ones who are aware
They will rather listen to Lil Wayne
True music always gets the curb.
They're German -- and being typically German by not making a fuss.
The banjo player steals the show, Steve Varney kills it, even on the harmonies when he's asked to. The most memorable parts of the song belong to him.
The banjo lines made me perk my ears while waiting for my cappuccino in a coffee shop a few minutes ago. I asked the barista what was playing. Looks like I discovered some great, new-to-me artists. Playing a banjo tastefully and sparsely is very difficult, not many can (or want to) do it. I'm also happy to hear that the folks in my old home (Germany) are finally catching on to this kind of music. When I still lived there, nobody knew what Americana is nor wanted anything to do with it....
This man fires magic out of his mouth like a gun. I am blown away.
I am head over heel in love with his music
Why is this the most perfect song I have ever heard in my life?
remember when our songs were just like prayers.
like gospel hymns that you called in the air.
come down come down sweet reverence,
unto my simple house and ring…
and ring.
ring like silver, ring like gold

Thanks so much for posting this bro. Allows me to sing along 🙂
I am so glad I discovered this beautiful man and his music. This song is probably one of the best songs I’ve ever heard. The version with the “Colorado symphony” is the best version of this song for me.
I first listened to this song in high school over a decade ago (I think Gregory still lives in my home town), one of the first songs I bought. Heard the Colorado Symphony version just recently. Loved it. Hey if you like Gregory you should check out "Chris and Thomas", they are very obscure but give off a similar but unique style to Gregory.
@@cooperyoung1928 thanks , i will check them out for sure.
play that FUKN BANJO STEVE!
I've been waiting years to yell this to him at a concert. Last night I succeeded.
So blessed to have this at my fingertips. Thank you fellas.
This song I do believe has crossed the threshold. Especially after this performance.
I never say this but Isakov has written a perfect song.
it did
Zach Byrd Adventure Hour this is the song and the version that got me. Pretty much he's got a couple masterpieces - suitcase full of sparks this sessions comes to mind.wish I could have been the guy filming
I agree. This song is in league with Amazing Grace. It's a hymn of the universe. a divine invention that Gregory was somehow able to hear and capture to lift all of us.
He absolutely did
bluejupiter100 Well stayed and I concur. This is a masterpiece. ❤️
I feel sad, but more at peace, like everything will be all right when I hear this song
"Turn these diamonds straight back into coal"
I dunno why it's gripping me this hard, but this line breaks me ...
I so love this song! It has such substance ❤
I've become pretty obsessed with this guys music the last couple of weeks. He's an amazing songwriter.
Arguably the song of the century.
This song is one of my favorites of all time and a big fan of Gregory Alan Isakov.... something about the guitar strum opening and one of the most poetic and beautiful stanzas ever written... "Remember when our songs were just like prayers. Like gospel hymns that called up in the air. Come down, come down sweet reverence. Unto my simple house and ring. And ring."
You can tell by that old and very well used guitar, this guy is nothing but genuine and a REAL musician. Very rare and uncommon these days.
These two sound incredible together.
They're very good friends. Steve Varney is in Gregory's band.
Again, they are just incredible.
i bought a banjo after watching this...
Show us the banjo please
how much you have learned.?
Nicole Joanne have you found tabs on this song?
btensionfree nothing close to the beauty of this composition
Trailer Trash Motorsports unfortunately not :(
I cannot stop listening to this version. It’s beyond beautiful. To me this song is about him breaking up & moving on even though it hurt . Which is exactly what I’m going through right now. I love this! It helps sooo much! Music is my life! ❤️
This has consistently remained the most moving song I've heard in my entire life ever since I discovered it 7 years ago and I don't see that changing until the day I die.
So beautiful
I love your music!!!
i was just going to comment this
Am I the only that feel that there is a very strong chemistry between them, love and admiration 😍😍😍
Not since Van Morrison have I witnessed a more poetic and genius individual, just a guitar, lyrics and mystic magical feeling...
I find this song playing in my head when I'm hiking around. Especially the banjo, it just digs it into your soul, real deep, like.
folks just walking through the park and not stopping to hear this beauty, smh
Who the heck disliked this masterpiece?
somebody without a soul ?
helen keller disliked this
A hater
200+ metal-heads and hip-hop "artists"
A sad person.we will pray for them
My days sent me this song and I listened to it for the first time this morning. I love you dad even when I’m mad at you
This was the song that turned me on to his music, and I'm very thankful for that.
Mine too!!! I heard it on Pandora and I had to look up the song and then the artist and I just fell in love with his music... And I never look up artist from Pandora!
Me too! I love the music. The lyrics are sad I think.
in my case it was "if i go and m going"..what a musician plus singer❤from India
Same here. Not sure where I heard it but I can’t explain how happy I am that I did. When people talk about music from the 60’s and 70’s and how many good artists there were back then, I wish I could show them all this guy as living proof that there are musicians who are just as good if not better. The issue is humans got too stupid and lazy to appreciate it.
Steve varney is a legend, get on kid reverie!
Love that banjo!
Loving the vintage Gibson. Love the simple attire. This is a simple man with beautiful talent.
I love the way his voice sounds live! I actually love the way this song sounds live... Absolutely beautiful
This is the song that got me hooked like a son a.......
People walking by in the background, howw!? i would be watching these dudes jam
I would want to hear every single note
Still waiting to wander upon Gregory in a park playing. Like how does this even happen???
The time of 3.00 is when Steve varney become God.and I'm an oul fella of 60.pure genius.
Carolina Theater in Durham last night. It was one heck of a show. The venue was great, acoustics perfect, and he was so relaxed. This guy's horticulture background shows in all of his lyrics. He's inspiring things on my farm and my soul is better because of this man's music. He in 2016 is what Jackson Browne was to me in my teens and into my twenties.
"turn these diamonds straight back into coal" ~ love seeing Steve and Gregory together~
Words cannot describe how this song makes me feel. This is a masterpiece!
Yeah I can feel that..nd its heavenly🤗
This video is probably the most human and personal music video I've ever watched. Two men, a guitar, and a banjo, playing an amazing song in a park surrounded by people just going about their daily lives. It's grounded, peaceful, and utterly beautiful ❤️
I love that it's singing, in a park, somewhere? Could be anytime, in history. A covered wagon, or a campfire song, right now, in the woods. Just instrument's & the talented artists, music. Time traveling music. ❤
I don't know what it is about this song but I just can't seem to kill it. I've been listening to it for several years now and it still radiates my soul. I go to sleep to this song. It calms my day. I've seen them in concert several years ago in Atlanta and they were great. He's so nice as we had the chance to chat and take pictures with them. By far one of the best songwriters of our time.
Great video btw. The color of the fall is the best color and this song definite compliments the video. One of the best video from Cardinal Sessions.
These lyrics! --- woa woa woa!
The Stable Song - by Gregory Alan Isakov
Remember when our songs were just like prayers

this song makes me very happy and also very sad. This song is so beautiful.
Y'all make such beautiful music together 😍
This is a wonderful song. I've listened to many versions on You Tube, but like this one the best. The banjo is crisp and the tempo just right, to me. The lyrics are mysterious, but if broken into smaller parts all feel familiar. Especially the lyrics "Now I’ve been crazy couldn’t you tell. I threw stones at the stars, but the whole sky fell. Now I’m covered up in straw, belly up on the table. Well and sang and drank, and passed in the stable " I'm not sure if the person in the song passed out or died on the table, but I interpret it my own way. I believe this "vagueness" and "disconnectedness" is deliberate and intended. Gregory's song writing style reminds me of my past. Hardly a song writer, but very much a single traveler, I can still feel "Distance" and "Transient" in his songs, and it reminds me of what I'd experienced. Thank you for posting this song, and to Gregory for writing this beautiful song!
There are tons of beautiful artists on Cardinal Sessions, yet this session truly makes me nostalgic the most.
I find this live performance so melancholic and deep, played with the heart, genuinely.
Most beautiful sound in the world.
lyriclover810 yeah
This song takes me to the great smoky mountains every time.
I know what you mean, I live a couple counties east of the national park..
I love this song. The more I listen to it the more I fall in love with it. And the Banjo player... haha haaa *sigh* ;)
Some serious banjo ☺️
This video has 440,000 views and I must be at least about 20,000 of them I could listen to this song for the rest of my days!
there are songs that are so powerful that have the power to represent a whole era of your life. this is one of them.
Gregory I where have you been all my life. Your songs and music so soothing to the soul. God bless you young man may he keep you on your path. I'm late husband could sing he had a beautiful voice he would have loved you. I sent your video to my daughter she can sing and plays guitar little bit she also has a beautiful voice. It has a lot of lack of confidence. I think a lot of singers seem to have that my husband was really good but he didn't believe in himself. I hope you keep making soul searching Soul soothing songs they are wonderful
simply fantastic! Isakov is great, but the banjo/harmony is equally great! What a team!
7 years later and I still come back to this song for comfort
Can't get enough of that banjo
Haven’t heard this since two relationships ago.still fits like a comfy sweater🤘
Its been said so many times, but these lyrics in the stable song blow my mind, i dont know what it is about them
Both are "old souls " blessing us today. They take my old soul home...
i´m from colombia, and i love indie, i´m wanna live in USA or in Canada only for this music
I wanna like this video a trillion times over!
First heard this song in the movie "Peanut Butter Falcon" Great song, great movie and have been a fan since.
Steve Varney is dope
Angels truly walk among us . . . Carry on boys! You are touching souls with this music.
i want to see isakov before i die
Me too that's bucket list.
You will absolutely not be disappointed, I was lucky enough to see him in Madison a while back and words cannot do the experience justice.
Dream of my lifetime was being at his concert with my daughter at Red Rocks in August '19 - Pre COVID days. I've lived long enough to easier attend 100 concerts and this was definitely one of the best of my lifetime. Had tickets to see him again with the Lumineers last summer ('20 COVID summer); hoping I live long enough to cash those tickets next summer. Whenever live music safely returns, his will be the first ticket I buy. The best poet of this generation.
The number of songs by this man that I love are infinite.
beautiful song by a beautiful artist. thank technology and Pandora Internet Radio for sending me this beautiful song!
I motioned what you just said.
These guys can come sit on my porch anytime, I'd be proud to have them.!
listening music before i fell asleep then suddenly your album appear, and here i am addicted on ur music
Love that banjo
When i listen to this song i wanna leave this world live into a beautiful small town in a wooden house where i can see the sun set and nature singing
