    DEVELOPMENT
    Two years ago I noticed a nice Commodore 64 homebrew game called Tombstones (2017) by Megastyle. I liked it and I tought that I could do something similar.
    Atari 8-bit computers are 2.5 years older than C64 but have some strenghts I could have used, even considered the fact I am not a skilled coder.
    Thanks to 16 shades of one color graphic mode, I decided to make the game look like old black and white western movies and I designed a smooth background.
    Taking advantage of A8 widescreen and overscan features, there's a "cinemascope" screen and duelist enter from sides.
    Atari sprites have a limited horizontal width but unlimited heigh. Therefore I asked TIX if he could design tall characters.
    Konstantinos made ninety awesome 16x64 pixels 3 colors animations frames and smartly solved the problem of the deaths, not easy because of tight sprites.
    Regarding music, I asked Miker to make Ennio Morricone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly main theme.
    He always wanted to do it for Atari and in fact the result is really good.
    Recently the Italian composer, one of the greatest and most influential film composers of all time, passed away and we would like to honor him.
    Michal made victory (Johnny Cash Ballad of a Teenage Queen) and death tunes too.
    The game was programmed with dmsc's FastBasic.
    Not only Daniel made an awesome new language, but he helped me when I was stuck.
    Sprites were made with Atari Player Editor and tunes were composed with Raster Music Tracker (RIP Radek Sterba).
    The game adjusts speed for PAL and NTSC machines.
    On May 2020 the project was nearly finished therefore I decided to enter ABBUC Software Contest 2020, a very famous competition organized by the club of which I am member.
    The project would never have been possible without AtariAge 8-bit computers forum.

    The soundtrack is phenomenal! Great use of graphics. The b/w adds nice depth. Wish this existed in 1982!

    Damn sir, that Pokey rivals SID here! Exceptional sound coding. The decision to do this in greyscale to evoke an old B&W serial was brilliant!
    Sorry I'm late to the party.

      Thank you very much, I am glad you appreciated the tune and graphics choice! Together with "cinemascope" screen it evokes old western movies.

    How about adding also the option to use a joystick combination (ex. up, up, right, down, left, and FIRE!), I believe it will provide even more fun gameplay! After all, it will seem like we are actually holding a gun and our skills were involved in the shooting!

      I believe this is a typing tutor - type game. With more pace and some training key patterns (FJFfJFJJ.K..) could be useful.

    Very nice work on this game. Love how you went with black and white graphics, and the animations here are very well done. Gameplay wise, it reminds me of the Quick Draw game from Kirby's Adventure. So, very simplistic, but that seems to be the intention. Nice job.
    Also, the lady can shoot me out any day hohoho.

    A very simple game, but the animations and sounds really sell it. From the way the lady moves you can tell this is aimed at men of culture...

    Someone commented "the game has real production value" and linked a funny video from Tapeheads 1988 comedy. I deleted it by mistake. Here's the video: czcams.com/video/UCT_F3_-Qaw/video.html

    Is this inspired by the fantastic movie "The Quick and the Dead" in which the protagonist, played by Sharon Stone, is known as "The Lady"? The graphics look fantastic! Great job.

      @philsan69  Před 3 lety +1

      Good catch. Graphic artist and I liked that film. TIX was inspired by Sharon when he drew the sprites. The original name of the game was Cowgirl but eventually I decided to nickname cowgirl like Ellen.

    I tried running this on Atari800MacX, and it doesn't work with graphical artifacting on.

    • @philsan69
      @philsan69  Před 2 lety

      The game runs on real hardware and on Altirra, even with artifacting enabled. Artifacting is a graphic effect added by emulators therefore there's a bug in Atari800MacX. I informed the developer.

    Whats up with all this Homebrew Atari stuff? I wrote hundreds of great Atari games. The only way to share them back then was buying cases of beer or letting my kids check them out. A lot of my best stuff, nobody saw. The whole shebang got left behind in a move. There was no damn internet and the computer stuff cost a fortune/ You mean I could be rich now if we kept it all? Damn!
