      A Harry Potter RPG... has potential.
      Honestly, it would be extremely interesting if it had mechanics centered around class attendance, being absent, getting searched for by Filch, the teachers, the ghosts, etc. that progresses as you play.
      It seems like the best way to do the spells would be to have some happen in real time in and out of action sequences (like using Lumos to light your way in the dark, then switching it off so you can escape when an enemy sees you) while others (like Alohemora) are situationally active, and others (such as Imperio) are accessed through dialogue trees.
      It would also be cool if you could level certain abilities at different rates, to accomodate different play styles, and make the whole game beatable for each playstyle.
      Like an Alohemora specialist could walk into Gringott's and walk out with enough money to sink a galleon, then bribe their way to the top. Stuff like that.

    It is actually a shame since the first two harry potter games based on the first two films were actually good, had things from the book that were missing from the movies and had a lot of fun stuff to do and explore, I think it is because they were old fashioned platformers rather than shooters which to be honest were pretty fun, it was the 3rd game when they messed up the games

  • @xertris
    @xertris Před 9 lety +228

    Joe you shouldn't judge an entire series of games by just playing two in the series. Especially if your playing the games that aren't representative of most of them.
    Most of the games 1-3, 5-6 are open world games set at Hogwarts castle. Where there are plenty of things to do. Such as doing side missions, finding secrets, and exploring the castle with the spells you learn throughout the game. Additionally in 1-3 there was a house point system in place. Doing things good for the school such as winning quittich matches, and doing well in certain side activities earned your house points. However doing activities considered bad by the school such as being caught by prefects past curfew or in restricted sections of the school would cause your house to lose points. At the end of the game, regardless of how well you completed the main plot you could still lose the house cup.
    I haven't played it all the way,but 4 seemed like a top down shooting gallery and i didn't like that. However the other games in the series excluding 4 and both 7s are generally good games to me.
    In 2 you could free fly on Harry's nimbus 2000 around the Hogwarts's grounds.
    In 3 you could play as Harry, Ron, and Hermione each with their own special abilities. In 5 they introduced a new system of spell casting where instead of hitting a button to cast a spell you would have to move the analogue sticks in certain configurations, and in dueling EVERY spell was useful in some way. Spamming stupefy or any spell that matter in a duel would get you disarmed and beat fast.(on the Ps2 version)
    In 6 they expanded on that spell casting system, and refined the dueling even more. They also added several mini games such as potion making which was challenging, but the challenge didn't come from unresponsive controls (at least not on the wii)
    I couldn't speak for any of the spin off games other than Quittach world cup (which i thought was fun with friends), but I'd say over all the harry potter series of games is mostly good with a few bad apples in the mix.
    Btw your memory charms are horrible angry joe.

    What I want to see, an epic RPG taking place during the first Wizard War with Voldemort as a character that you create yourself. Dialogue choices that affect the story in some way (there's so much room to work with here, we only know bits of the first war). Maybe the finale is a big ass duel with Voldemort and it's an unwinnable fight or maybe you can win by surviving until Dumbledore shows up to save your ass and you get a good ending where you survive until the 2nd Wizard War and it could be a Red Dead Redemption type ending where Voldemort shows up after his return to take you down personally. You send your family off into hiding because it's you he wants and go outside to be insta-killed.
    Imagine a game where you're trying to recruit various factions to go against Voldemort, factions who might have a reason to not want to help you. That shit would be awesome. You get new weapons in the form of new wands and maybe the reward for beating the game on the hardest difficulty or getting 100% is access to the Elder Wand which trounces everybody.

    I think this review got me thinking of the possibilities that could have been explored if the game followed the events that happened at the school during the events of Deathly Hallows part 1. imagine seeing what the new teachers and classes are like and talking to students and getting their opinion on everything. Imagine how a first year student would feel as this would be their first year in training and thus their first impression, then imagine how a returning student would feel about the school being taken over. The Deathly Hallows book mentioned the fact Defense against the Dark Arts class got changed to Dark Arts I'm curious as to how this idea was never explored.

    They should make a RPG game, that follows the storyline of all 7 books. You follow the entire plot and storyline of every books, and all the unimportent subplots is sidequests, like the birthday party for the no headed ghost in book 2 is a little sidequest. That could be a very good and long game, if the gameplay is topnotch. They could allso split it in 2 so the first game is book 1-4 and the second is 5-7 that would be awesome.

    1 - I rented it once as a kid, can't really remember it.
    2 - Very good. Introduced the free-roam system to the series and had a cool, almost RPG-like atmosphere. Even better for a kid.
    3 - Amazing, I have very fond memories of it. Expanded on both elements of 2.
    4 - Sucked. Way different from 2 & 3, very linear.
    5 - A great breath of life. Brings back the "open-school" style, with improved graphics and bigger stories.
    6+ I never played....for obvious reasons.
    I still think positively of the HP series of games for, along with the book/movies, for introducing me to the fantasy genre and being fun games to boot.

      A lot of older stuff are better then the new ones in this generation apparently, which is rather sad. Not because of the "nostalgia" bull crap, but because things like video games actually do play better then the new ones. That's not to say that they're all terrible or anything, but it just feels like that the more stuff come in, the more bland and stupid that they get. And this pretty much goes out for everything else in entertainment as well. I hope that one day, we will get decent movie licensed games again, and not crap like these, Iron Man 2, Battlefield, Thor, Green Lantern, Amazing Spider-Man 2, etc.

    Grew up with the first three harry potter games. Damn they were good at world building and atmosphere when it came to Hogwarts and wizard card collecting. 3 was the personal fav because the gameplay was the most polished at that point (not to mention third year's story was dope for it) and you got to play as the three main characters throughout. I didn't even realize Jeremy Soule composed them but it makes sense with how memorable the music was.

    I played the first three Harry Potter games when I was a kid, I really enjoyed them. The second one especially. It was like an open world game. You got to explore Hogwarts and the Hogwarts grounds. You attended classes and learned new useful spells that allowed you to access new areas and get collectibles that you were't able to get before. You discovered hidden passage ways that were not part of the story, but were used for finding collectibles. The second and third game were this way. I vaguely remember the first game, but I don't remember if it was linear or open world.

    I normally would completely agree with Joe, but here I just can't. You can't justify judging every game in a series based on two games. Harry Potter 1-3 were actually VERY good games. I honestly recommend playing them.

  • @TheStupidLama
    @TheStupidLama Před 8 lety +67

    The EA games for Book/Movie 5 and 6 were *good* .. the fighting was kinda meh.. it did the job.
    But you *explored* Hogwards, had classes, fights and you *did* get extra info, talk to the portrats, discover hidden pathways to sneak through the castle.. Hell I got lost half the time because Hogwarts felt *huuuuuge*! But they even took care of that "problem" by having you use the twins' Map, which showed you through little appearing footprints how to get to your destination the quickest, even taking into account secret shortcuts through portraits you already discovered!..
    It was totally fine, although the fighting was kinda slow and underwhelming - *although* the spells all made sense. You had to make special movements with your controller sticks to perform desperately needed spells. Expelliarmus was almost impossible to hit, because the enemy would deflect it, worst case upon yourself! - But Expelliarmus would (like the freezing spell) *end* the fight in your favor. Why? because people can't fight if they are frozen, disarmed or if they are hooked into the air by their feet leaving them to just hang there. This made *sense* ! Also I seem to remember you could deflect spells back at the caster by perfectly timing your shield charm! Amazing the more I think about it^^
    This/These last games are horrible.

    What on earth happened to the fantastic sense of adventure and brilliance that was manifest in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets on ps2. That game was so fun, you could wander through Hogwarts at night with the oddly satisfying stealth mechanics; collecting wizard cards was actually fun and the fact that it didn't follow on perfectly from the movie, allowing you to explore the open and diverse world was a godsend. Whoever made that game needs to get back to working on the franchise because although I played that game as a child, I would play it again now. Fantastic!

    • @EuroMIX2
      @EuroMIX2 Před 10 lety +5

      I own 5 and 6 on the Wii, and both of those are actually pretty good. 5 is more like the Lego series versions, where there are a variety of things to interact with and you are rewarded for finding and exploring everything. Hogwarts is pretty huge and is adapted from both the films and the real castle and sets.
      6 looks better than 5 and the wizard duelling is much better, but the interactivity is greatly lowered.
      I did enjoy the more creative made-up versions of Hogwarts present in earlier games, but 5 and 6 were both great adaptations of the films.

      I recently played through my box set of the first three PC games and I'd say the second is the best overall.
      You can see potential in the first, and oddly enough its most challenging elements (learning spells and Quidditch) are its most endearing aspects, but it's poor in most other ways.
      The second has a lot to explore, plus now you can actually redo most challenges and explore freely, which the first sorely lacked.
      The third looks the best and is nice in that it includes Hermione and Ron as playable characters, but has less content than 2.

The game is said to take about 20-30h storywise or about 70-80 if you go for everything, and I while I don't know exactly how far along I am, I am just having so much fun living the Hogwarts life as my own student, that I don't care how long I am taking. I mean you can fast travel between fireplaces, but what's the fun in that? Hogwarts has faithfully been recreated down to the smallest detail, so I wanna experience it by walking everywhere - I AM a Hufflepuff afterall, know for our patience and dedication.
