Around the time they moved human waste to the swamp instead of a proper sewer system. This is believed to have played a role why all three presidents elected in the 1840s died under 5 years after winning the election. Also, while average lifespans were low, this was due to adding child mortality, which was exponentially higher before proper medicine. If you made it past your childhood(the most vulnerable point health-wise) you had a good chance of living to your 50s-70s depending on your social status.

No; despite polio, FDR functioned. William Henry Harrison and Zachary Taylor go first because they died which is the most unhealthy thing of all. Assassinated presidents like Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, and Kennedy don't count because the assassination was not due to their health issues. Taft and Cleveland were obese, but while leading to later complications, obesity itself is not a major disability; fat people can perform tasks other than being runway models. Which of the following was a major impairment? Pierce was an untreated alcoholic; Kennedy had Addison's Disease, Trump and Reagan were mentally impaired. Eisenhower and Johnson each had a history of heart disease and multiple heart attacks. Wilson suffered strokes, the last of which occurred while in office and is said to have incapacitated him. A congressional committee visited the post-stroke Wilson and found him mentally alert, but rumor has always had it that either his wife Edith ran the country or that Wilson was so impaired by the stroke that he remained inflexible and failed to get America to join the League of Nations, setting up conditions for WWII. Surely each of these is more serious a disability than the fact the FDR could no longer run a fifty meter dash.

    People left unmentioned:
James Madison: He was 5'4 and 100 pounds. He was described as frail and frequently feverish, and was known to be epilectic.
Franklin Pierce: He was healthy in his younger years, being very physically active even at the expense of his education. But his health declined over time. First notable injury was a damaged knee from "service" in the Mexican-American war. After many tragedies he turned to alcohol. By the end of his life, after the death of his wife and close friends, he apparantly lost a lot of weight (he was already the second lightest president at 140lb) and had destroyed his liver.
I think these choices would have been better than William Henry Harrison. Because, while its an interesting story, it's just the same type of random illness that killed Taylor or Polk and was less of a testament to a lifelong of ailments or notable health problems (except Polk would also have been a good pick bc of his sicknesses.)
Edit: and ofc FDR. But other popular comments already mention that

I'm surprised Lyndon Johnson isn't on this list. He was a habitual smoker during his time in the Senate, until a heart attack stopped that... temporarily. After LBJ left the Presidency in 1969, he resumed smoking and couldn't stop. Along with other issues, he had a second heart attack in 1972 and a fatal one in 1973. Men on his side of the family had a habit of dying relatively early. His diet didn't help his case either.

I'll admit I was expecting FDR to be on the list. He struggled with more than just polio. That said, I would think that most of our 18th Century presidents would have made the list since medical care was exactly top notch back in the day. I would remove Harrison from the list because he contracted pneumonia on Inauguration Day. Back then, presidents were inaugurated in March and the day was a chilly and wet one. Harrison refused to wear a coat and then proceeded to make a speech that was an astounding one hour and forty-five minutes. Pig-headed? Yes. Stupid? Also yes. Sick on arrival at the White House? Not necessarily. Also, Reagan may have had health problems, but he did live in a time of excellent health care, so many of his health conditions were controlled. He did live to 93. Sickly people generally don't hang on that long. So I would remove those two and add FDR and George Washington. Washington was in terrible shape by the time he left office and died not too long after.
