  • I talk through the various types of planners I've tried over the years, why none of them have worked for me, and the custom solution I've designed for myself!

    I like the planner you've designed for 2024. When I was still working I did something similar with a Moleskine notebook and just used the extra pages for to-do lists and random notes. Your Field Notes planner is just what I need now that I'm retired.

    Hey Louis, Thanks for another Notebook/Planner book for Men !!
    1:24 ...I like the 1900's Notebook designs.
    2:20 ...One issue, is the small writing estate space in these books.
    8:12 ...The Field Notes 3.5" x 5.5" (8.9 cm x 13.9 cm) are the perfect size for a pocket notebook..my new favorites.
    I find the Field Notes Notebook is better paper, it doesn't bleed, ghost , or nib dent like Moleskine Cahier Pocket notebooks.

    Many of us are saddled with digital work calendars in MS Exchange or other group/service offering, with little opportunity to truly customize them to our liking or to our actual needs. The best feature of them is reminders of recurring personal events that one shouldn't miss like birthdays and anniversaries. Even so, I find technology in this regard to be a double-edged sword. Looking forward to finding a better solution. Thanks for presenting these options.

    I've used a week view Passion Planner the past two years, and while I enjoyed having the large size and being able to time block, I came to the realization that I wasn't using the planner to it's fullest potential. My schedule is pretty constant M-F because of being at work, so many weeks my planner looked exactly the same. I actually ended up filling out the planner at the beginning of the week, putting a few to do items on it, and then forgetting to check back in on it until I was ready to fill it out for the next week. Now I would always do the weekly reviews and month recaps and fill in stuff AFTER the fact, but I was not doing great at habit tracking or getting things done.
    This year I've switched to a Field Notes as my monthly/weekly planner. I use a two page span to draw out my month, then I use the next two page span to draw out my week, then the next two page span will be used for to do items for that week and a spot to write down any notes. Then each week I would repeat that. So basically a month should take up roughly 22 pages of a Field Notes, giving me 2 months per notebook.
    Best part about it all, is I carry it with me wherever I go and am constantly looking at it along side my other "thoughts and ideas" pocket notebook. Looking forward to seeing how it works for me this year.

    Hi, there. I also like simple monthly planners. My favourite brand is Hightide, they make an A5 monthly planner with spare pages for writing. They also have a set of 3 small and thin notebooks and because the planner has a pvc cover I stick one of those notebooks at the end of the planner. I think I’ve achieved a perfect setup. Thanks for your videos 😊

    Monthly views and week at a glance is where I found my system, I use hobonichi weeks and on the pages with typical hobonichi content at the end I create my own layouts, for me is functionality over making it pretty there are things I record because I have a bad memory: events, health, last time I paid for a something specific - collections bujo style - is portable but not as field notes is 😅 but I like having the whole year view at my fingertips, for work nolty b6 notebook is a rare beauty... I love the size, the paper and the 3.5 mm grid so much real state! pages are numbered it's slim, it opens flat so elegant and not expensive. I use gantt charts and the Alastair method for tasks and project mgmt mostly, but 90% of what I do is digital, only need one book per year (176 pages)

    • @frankcoleman4652
      @frankcoleman4652 Před 7 měsíci +1

      Of course. Each FN covers 4 months. My setup is similar to the Hobonichi weeks. I leave the first page blank (I’ve learnt from the Master 😊) The left hand page is a week to view which gives me 4 lines per day for appointments which works fine. The right hand page is blank and I use it for to-dos and notes. This leaves me a few pages at the end of the book for a future log - any dates I need to note which fall further ahead than the current book - and any other notes. I draw the lines in pencil on the left hand page to divide it up into days and write the dates in etc in a small margin. Whole thing takes about 45 mins for me to set up, which is a bit tedious but I actually don’t mind. So I have a practical diary - no journaling or memory keeping - which works perfectly for me, is cheap to produce, and fits into my trouser pocket 🎉

    Have you used the Traveler Company (Midori) Passport system? I have not but use a Smythson Panama $$$ with a Leuchtturm ball pen -. Drehgriffel Nr. 1, Red. It is the size of a Field Notes book but with 128 pages of patented watermarked paper which handles all inks perfectly. Bound in leather it lasts forever.

    I've just found your channel and I think I've devoured 90% of your videos in the last two days 😂
    I'm a keen journaller, but I don't carry a pocket notebook with me everywhere. You have convinced me to buy my first set of Field Notes and an EDC pen. I can't wait for them to arrive!
    One question; I have seen some nice looking leather cases for Field Notes and they have a holder for credit cards and a pen. I'm thinking a Field Notes in this holder with a couple of cards could replace my wallet. Do you prefer to keep your Field Notes unprotected because you like them to wear as you use them, or is there any other reason? I'm just curious, as you have such detail in your videos I'm sure you have a good reason for your choice ☺️🙏

    • @BlankFirstPage
      @BlankFirstPage  Před 7 měsíci +4

      Thanks for your comment!
      I like to keep the Field Notes separate because it does wear, and that's a big part of the enjoyment for me. I also like the look of the notebook by itself, and I feel a leather cover would hide that - although I've been tempted by the beautiful leather covers myself!
      I think it's a great option to get a cover with space for cards and a pen if you want to combine everything. It could be a good way to make sure you've always got your notebook with you.
      So glad my videos have made you want to try the pocket notebook life, thanks for watching!
