- Video #705: Pastel chalks stick surprisingly well to polymer clay. In this video I provide lots of ideas to try out for yourself... More Info: www.beadsandbeading.com/blog/?... Polymer Clay Tutor.
In this video are examples of different brands of Chalk Pastels (Not Oil Pastels), and examples of finished polymer clay pieces that have incorporated Chalk Pastels.
In these examples from previous PcT tutorials, the chalk pastels have been used on both raw clay and mixed into liquid polymer clay.
Chalk pastels come in many colors and quality standards, ranging from Student Grade to Artist Grade. The artist grade chalk pastels tend to have a higher pigment level than the student grade ones.
Chalk pastels stick very well to polymer clay and usually don't need to be sealed unless they will receive high wear, or you are worried about them getting dirty.
You can use any polymer clay safe finishes to seal your chalk pastels if you wish.

You can also use it with a wet brush so you can have more control over where it's applies, especially comes in handy on miniatures.
brikhouse good to know, thank you
but won't that mar the raw clay?
As usual you are a plethora of ideas and knowledge, Cindy......thank you for sharing!!
Oh my gosh.... that fairy door! Your work is beautiful.
Thank for the information! I just got some clay and pastels and tools in a sculpture box and I can’t wait to start creating!
Wow! SO BEAUTIFUL 😍 Thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge!! 🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️
you are very good explaining, and I love your tutorials they are so interesting
I love your tutorials! Super helpful. Thanks for making this!
Thanks Cindy! Just purchased my first bottle of TLS so I'll be trying this out today!
Thank you, I was just working with chalks and clay. You answered some of my questions already.
Think I said this in a video before but I love you!!! You seem to have a video for every polymer clay question I have. Thank you!
:)
Very well done and a lot of great information thanks a million!
Wow.that is so nice! You are soooo creative!
Thank you. I wish I had known about polymer clay when I was younger, but I am so happy I discovered it. I am always learning new and exciting ways to use it. I am going to purchase the liquid FIMO this week, one of the things I want to try with it is image transfer. You just gave me some wonderful tips, I am going to try using pumpkin spice seasoning and see if the wonderful scent sticks around. Thank you.
+Nicole Newman That is a very interesting idea using spice. You'll have to post back with a report!
I've been using the liquid Flimo for about 6 months, and I love it. It drys really hard and nothing, (and I mean nothing can move it!). It drys clear and I've used it to coat, fill and to reinforce clay items with no issues whatsoever. You can also mix small amounts of pastel or clay into it and stir it to either a smooth fondant thickness, or leave it chunky. I used it on my Gingerbread House as snow, it looks really good. However, it's quite pricy, and you don't get a lot for your money, however, it goes far depending on what your making. I always turn to it when I'm working clay as it's never let me down.
Magical Bevanna / Thanx I'm just getting into this I'm going to try that*
Liquid fimo clay!!!! yes please up in the list!!!!
Thank you! Love your videos!!!!!
Wonderful as always, Thank you!
Awesome & Useful Information. Thanks For Sharing
i would love to see your testing on the liquid clays :)
Tanks for the video i learn a lot from you thank u again! greetings from the Nederlands
Thank you for your tutorial!! I would like to ask in what stage we use soft pastels on clay? Before or after baking it? When do we apply it on air clay?
You have the eye of a true artist. You understand color to an exceptional degree. I just learned so much from you. :)
Aww, thank you so much for your kind words!
@@PolymerClayTutor thank YOU for sharing your excellent work!
Looks like a great technique
I loved it !!!! Thanks a lot!!!! Great help!!!!
What would I use,to protect it from weather, as I plan on mixing pc, omong plants in my outside planters😉
Awesome video!
how do you protect the pastels on already baked clay, and what kind of finishes do you get from all the products mentioned or others?.
I have just started using polymer clay and I am delighted to have found your videos. It is like having my own personal tutor on tap. Thank you.
Thank you! 💖💖💖
I have just ordered some mica powder after watching another of your videos. I really appreciate that you back up your personal opinions with experiments to back them up. Excellent teaching skills!
@@carolbarnes7520 Thank you! 💖
That was very useful. Thank you.
I would love to see a comparison of the liquid polymer clays!! :)
Very helpful.. Thank you!
I am a crafter aswell and got the Artist Loft pastels and they work realty good especially on a white peace of clay it works amazing 👌🏼
Sorry I am beginner and I dont understan when to use the chalk for painting. After baking or before?
Thanks for the information It’s helpful
love fimo liquid! good vid 😊
you are awesome i love you"re tips they help a lot .... :)
This is great. Thank you
PLEASE! That has been a burning question for a really long time for me. I would love to have your expertise in polymer clay with respect to oil pastels! Look forward to ( hopefully) seeing and hearing your results :-)
Thanks for the information.
I would LOVE for you to do the FIMO liquid video sooner rather than later. I have several projects that I am going to do for Christmas and if what I have heard about the liquid FIMO is true I would spend the money to get it. It is so much more expensive than TLS. Thank you, I have learned so much from you. I really appreciate your valuable teaching and knowledge that you share with us.
If you'd like to know ASAP, SugarCharmShop has done a video comparing TLS and Fimo Liquid Clay and talked about what she liked about each and what she uses it for. She does amazingly realistic miniatures, so perhaps that video could help you. :)
+Amy He thank you. I follow her but I missed seeing this one. I will go and watch it now.
Hi Nicole, there are so many wonderful things you can do with FIMO liquid. Basically your FIMO and TLS are the same except that the FIMO is more translucent after baking. Not only can you mix it with caulk pastels to color it but you can also use oil paints, eyeshadow, and powdered food coloring. I have even used different spices(cinnamon, clove, turmeric), instant coffee, and oil pastels. As long as you don't mix it with a water based color there are lots of different things you can use to color your FIMO or TLS. I have even mixed it with sand and baked it, which creates a wonderful effect. You can paint it on to a printed picture and put it in a cameo. After you color it you can even paint with it. In case you didn't know Kato Polyclay sells it own line of colored liquid clay, and Sculpey just came out with gold and silver colored TLS. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask me. I've been doing this over 20 years so I'm full of information. Take care, Dee😊
I tried oil pastels today on clay and didn't get good results. I've "played" with clay for so many years and love it even more than I did!
Very helpful thanks.
I'd love to see comparisons done on the translucency of each 'translucent' liquid clay and how they look when finished, as well as how they look with pigments added.
Look up Blue Bottle Tree. That woman did *all* the research about little details like that.
@aprilstewart5929 my comment was made 7 years ago lol.
@@Yamashta How fallible of me. :)
I just love you tips....100% helpful... I just wanted to know would it work if I mix the chalk pastels in with the mica powder? polymer clay isn't very big in South Africa so you struggle to find a lot of colours this side...
I would hope you can do the liquid FIMO sooner rather than later. I really appreciate your videos and I hope you have a wonderful day!
Do you know if you can apply the pastel dust to your sculpture once it is baked? Or does it need to be when the clay is unbaked, because I have a pice that I made in multiple firings that I was going to finish with chalk pastel but wasn't sure if it would adhere. Thanks!
Well! I've only watched 2 of your videos and I'm so excited. I am completely new to polymer clay and you videos are fantastic, so I will be continuing to watch and learn. You have so many videos, and I haven't had a chance to look at all of them so if there is a video on my question I apologise. But do you, or anyone else is might read this, do you do this as your business? Or just a hobby?
I am looking to start an online shop and I am curious to see if y'all can make a good living (not looking to get rich😁)
Doing polymer clay? Thank you!!
I know you said it doesn't really rub off once its applied to raw clay and baked, but if you apply it to already baked clay does it still not rub off or does it then?
Hi Cindy! Love your tutorials. Have you tried pan pastels on polymer clay? I started out with the ones you have shown and then decided to try the PanPastels. I love them! They are a bit more expensive but they last a long time.
Can you use this to colour cooked clay? And if so, how do you seal it?
Yes, bump it up please. Love your fairy door.
Hi , I was just wondering to use pastel dust on metal, ,like enamel what would be the best way?
I'd be very interested in seeing the FIMO liquid polymer clay video!
Hi .. thanks for the wonderful video. Very inspiring. If you don't mind , i have a question. So , if i put the chalk into the clay and mix it before baking, will the chalk reduce clay elasticity after baked?
Hello :-) I was wondering if I have baked something and I leave it to cool down and then when it is ready can i then paint it with chalk mixed with sculpey glaze, I baked a beige colour ornament and was wanting to make it look more brown ?
Hi, I really enjoy your Videos. I do have a question: how safe are the different Varnishes for the Skin. They look very nice on the beads, but just wondering about the safety of the varnish.
You can also use petal dust. I use it on dollhouse miniatures.
Would love to see the Fimo clear and pastels.
Nice video. Thanks for the explanation between the two types . I’m gonna try my hand at clay succulents . I’m a succulent addict 🤣. I have over 200 plants . But I’ve gotten spider mites and Mealybugs. Plus rot and other issues . I want to make them so realistic that one can’t tell they’re clay . Seems that the oil pastels would make the perfect “ farina “ look . Like the waxy coating on real ones . I’ll try both types and see how it goes . Cheaper than acrylic paints and so many color choices . Your creations are gorgeous 😊
Sounds like an excellent plan! Who better to attempt to recreate succulents, than a succulent addict! 😀
Thank you for such an informative tut!😊 I have been looking for a vid on either acrylic or watercoloring on raw or baked premo. Have you tried that? If not, is it possible? And would u do a vid on it?
Thanx😊😊😊
Thank you so much for sharing. Hugs and purrs
Cindy I have a bunch of Pebeo Silk Paints and would like to ask if you think it would work with polymer clay? I havent tried it yet, but just thought perhaps you may have. thanks for many great tips and advice. xx
Hi there, if I want to use it on baked polymer clay on a face I've made, what could I seal it with ?
Hello! great vid, thank you - may i ask if you ever add the colour after baking? as far as i know it's fine to do so? pastels seem to be so much finer & 'airbrushed' in finish that i'd like to try them on my miniatures, but i add so much detail in my sculpting, that painting soft clay will destroy it, so i need to do it last after baking, so i would need a nice thin, matte seal or glaze i think ? im so new to pastels haha, THE FEAR! :)
Yes, please test the liquid fimo. Also, as I've asked in another comment, I would love to see a comparison between different brands of pearly clays when it comes to mica content, especially when applied to the mica shift technique.
Premo contains the most mica.
+DeeEll86442 I know that, but premo isn't available to me. I can only work with fimo, but I'm curious to see just how pearly it can be next to other brands. I know premo will shine on that one.
iv used oil pastels for tinting translucent clay and liquid
Me Again! Question: When using TLS on baked clay to attach a piece of clay to cover the back of a metal clasp that was baked in, do I need to cure it again in order for the TLS to dry, or will it dry without curing?
How can you remove any pastels from the clay? Ive brushed too much onto a piece, havent baked it yet, and im wondering if there is a way to remove the excess
Could you do a demo of a translucent hollow pendant using liquid clay, soft natural clay, and alcohol markers?
Will outdoor Mod Podge work as a good protective coat?
Yay! I'm so glad I found you!! Your tutorials are awesome and I love all your tips and tricks!! :)
Question: where can you buy the liquid fimo? I live in Canada, and have only found it on eBay and it is big bucks. lol
Hi Cindy. I would love to see a test on the FIMO liquid. I really love it but would be interested to see what you think. The best thing I found out is that it actually glows under UV light. I did a tutorial called 'Neon boat' to test it and it does really work. Thanks for the vids as always. Hope you had a great halloween!
HI! Can I use Mod Podge in place of Liquid Clay?
good video, I would like to have more info on liquid fimo clay. Thanks
Thank you, I used chalk pastels mixed with the clay directly and it turned out okay. I still think I put too much into the mix because it breaks easily.
I would love to see the FIMO liquid polymer clay video. Also, you did a video a while back on how the new sculpy pasta machine worked, Can you tell me what you thought about the result. thank you
can you protect it with the min wax, because that's all i have for now.
So it is safe to mix it into clay befor baking? Thank you for the video!😁
Does the chalk come off with water or do you have to add some kind of polish once it's baked?
very nice :o) my favorite was the fairy door :o)
Great video. Thank you Cindy for all your information and all that you teach me and the many other clay artists out here.
I have experimented a little and turned translucent and white clay into whatever colour, using shaved chalk pastels. By mixing it right inside. Depending on the intensity wanted of the colour, I also have tested out other ways to pigment polymer clay, mixed in and baked it with shaved oil pastels, oil paint and in some cases even acrylic paint worked. Oh yes, and pigment ink seemed okay too, but it takes too much to mix in and get a decent hue. I was surprised at all the results. Messy, but then that is the best part about being an artist. :o) I did a simple blog article about it at HeArtfullycreating.
I don't know why but i couldn't find any chalk pastel in local art stores. I'm wondering if there is any chance that hard and chalk pastels are the same thing. And thank you for this informative video 👍🏻
Can I use it in air dry clay? I only work with air dry clay. Thanks
Can you show how to make fairy wings using FIMO translucent liquid clay asap. Thanks, I've learned so much watching your videos.
Fimo liqid is amazing, i use that material for making something like a fake resin look because new fimo liqid is super transparent.
What about using liquid chalk pens/markers?
I bought some resin dye (color shifting type) pigment by mistake and I was wondering if I could use it on black polymer clay? Originally I thought I could make a paint pigment for plastic models out of it but that was a bust. I hope you can answer this, I can't find anything on it so far. Thank you in advance.
Is it possible to blend the pastel into solid unbaked clay for coloration?
Thanks for sharing this, I may have found my new favorite way to colour my super sculpey stuff. Chalk pastels are usually quite opaque so I'm guessing I don't need to use white clay for this, right?
Right! Just do a little test sample and see what kind of coverage you get with the type of chalk pastel you're using, how heavy that you use it, the color of the clay underneath, etc. so you know how it will turn out after it is baked.
do you bake the clay then put pastels on them or put pastels on them then bake?
please do a video on fimo liquid!
So you paint the clay while it's still wet? Do ppl ever paint the piece after baking it so you are painting a hard surface?
Would you do a video on polymer clay hair accessories?
I couldn't find the artist's loft soft pastel size kit you have at the Surrey Micheals (yes I'm in the same city as you :)! ) ...and it wasn't cheap either, I only got a small box of 12 colors for $16 dollars, and anything bigger was more expensive, they only had a large box of skin tone portrait colors for around $26, so I'm guessing the rainbow colored one would be the same price if they had it in stock that day. I'll try to check out Langley next time!
Good video. I wish you had tested the oil pastels as well since they are the only pastels available at my most convenient store. I hope you will do that video soon.
- Heidi
Hi, You can use oil pastels as well as oil paints. You can also use left over eyeshadow, powdered food coloring, and different spices and instant coffee. As long as you don't use any colors that are waterbased. I've seen people use acrylic paints but when it bakes the water creates steam and can make bubbles in your baked clay, so it's best not to use it. You can add it glitter or sand to create some wonderful effects. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions I'd be more than happy to help. Take care, Dee😊
how does polymer clay turn out if it was put in a sulfer solution.
Another fab tutorial for a beginner; thank you Cindy, I have to Pin you to my Everything Polymer Clay board.
How do you clean your mat?
Great vdeo. Have you used Derwent inktense blocks on polymer clay. Wondering if the intense colors stay intense after baking the clay. Thanks for the informative video.
Thanks Jayne! I actually don't know since I have not yet tested Derwent Inktense blocks with polymer clay. I would suspect they would be compatible, and it would make sense that they would be more intense than other chalks since they are highly pigmented, but it would be something that would need to be tested to be sure. If you have some I would say Go For It! If not, I would go buy 1 (if that is even possible) and see for your self. Let me know what you find out!
does coating it w mod podge ruin the colours?
I'm completely new to this, and wondered if the Sculpy oven dry clay is supposed to be flexible? Are there any that dry hard like ceramic for example? If you use pastels on unbaked clay, do the colors change after being baked? Interested in knowing if you have ever used gilders paste on clay? I love the stuff, but no idea if it can be used or baked. Can you use the pastels on already baked clay, and how do you finish/protect the piece after coloring? Sorry to have written a book, but I love you videos, and you're so knowledgeable. Thank you so much! 💕
Lynn Perez gilders paste can be used on polymer clay.
Yes do the Fimo
