The Haunted Mansion is a perfect ride, let's not try to pretend that it isn't. But guys! I have so many ideas. I have TOO many ideas. So today, I'll be giving you a quick and dirty of the changes I would make to The Haunted Mansion if I was the big boss man for a day.
    Anyway, enjoy.

My first fix: get the riders to stop talking over the Ghost Host in the lobby and stretching room. I'm from out of state and every time I've visited in the last two years (twice, because, yeah, going to DL is expensive) the crowds inside the Haunted Mansion are 1) actual crowds of too many people herded inside, and 2) rude and loud. Come on, people, stop talking to each other during the show - and it's as much a show as going to the theater albeit a much shorter one - and LISTEN and look around you.

It seems they do cram more people into the stretch room and portrait room than they did twenty or thirty years ago. While the portrait room section has always, technically, been a line, it used to be more like walking down a hall as opposed to being crammed in a bus.

    • @ashe767
      @ashe767 Před 3 lety +21

Part of the issue is that most people visiting DL are regulars/locals and have already experienced every attraction (maybe dozens or even hundreds of times). Talking over the soundtrack makes sense for them, even if it's disrespectful to those who haven't experienced the attraction.

I'd love to see the attic scene as it was originally envisioned before Hattie went out of comission the first time, now that he's back, reunite him with Beating Heart at last. I'd put it all back how it was supposed to go, with more updated effects for the pop up heads and scenery, swap Constance for Beating Heart again, not the initial corpse-like one but the eerie glowing eyes/uncertain expression one, put the beating sound front and center. That might be a nod to the former backstory in the Ghostly Gallery book that the cast members compiled. In this, Emily was Master Gracey's second wife. She was orphaned at sixteen and, young and vulnerable, met her distant cousin George and fell for him (though some speculated he was only after her to lock down more of the family fortune). She was young and playful on their wedding day and started a game of hide-and-seek with George at the reception, hiding in a trunk in the attic. But jealous Madame Leota locked the trunk and the poor girl suffocated. This story seems to have been inspired by an old legend that showed up in two poems, Samuel Rogers' "Ginevra" and Thomas Haynes Bayly's "The Mistletoe Bough", neither of which had a jealous rival but just an unfortunately latching trunk.

I'd add an additional scene to the graveyard. Yes there would be the crypt with skeletons, but would also be a scene where you come to some old rusted railroad tracks. On it is a steam locomotive standing at a decrepit old station that looks like it hasn't been used in a long time. A skeleton engineer leans out of the cab at the headlight shinning down the rusted rails while a shadowy fireman stokes the fire. Behind the locomotive and coal tender is a specially designed railroad car with one large window. Inside is a coffin, telling you that this is a funeral train. A ghost of a well dressed man in late 19th clothing sits on the coffin (presumably his) talking with a group of ghostly pallbearers. The car behind it is a regular passenger car with a few ghostly passengers seated and talking, then the last car you see before you move on is a dimly lit caboose. On the back platform of the caboose stands a skeleton conductor who beckons you to come aboard with one hand and be holding a red train lantern in his other. This will be inspired by the concept art for a scene at the Phantom Manor's Phantom Canyon scene. Visit sight below for more details

I've had an idea to enhance the ride for non-english-speaking or multilingual guests. Each doombuggy is equipped with a ghost-box like device that is stylized to look like something from the late 1800s to early 1900s. There would be a dial or buttons that would be used to select a language which would show on a little display/window. The device would "tune in to a spectral frequency" of a ghost narrator speaking the selected language. By default (when the buggies cycle back to the loading zone) it is set to the classic english narration. It would add a small amount of interactivity to the ride, albeit mostly utilitarian. It would probably work better in Orlando due to World's higher number of international visitors, but it would still be nice in Land, especially with the holiday overlay having more narration and giving the writers a creative challenge in adapting it while keeping the rhyme.

You have to remember in all cases the HM ride is actually in what's essentially a warehouse behind the Haunted Mansion's facade (well facade in Diseny World - Disneyland's ride is below and behind the HM building). It would be quite easy to just tear down the "interior" warehouse ride, leaving the facade part alone, and rebuilding an entirely new larger "interior" warehouse with technical modernization of the old scenes and the addition of new scenes. The only down side is that I'm sure the ride would probably be out of commission for a couple years. (PS - I agree, NO VIDEO SCREENS!)

Of course as I was watching this, I was thinking about things I would add on top of this, along with how everything would be translated over to the Haunted Mansion Holiday. Here’s what I came up with.
    Regular Haunted Mansion:
    - Make the cue more interactive like in Orlando and Tokyo
    - Add something to the loading zone. It’s just a black void and is desperately in need of something there
    - Replace the bride. Right now the bride looks kind of stupid. I would swap her out with a new bride similar to the first, but much more lifelike. She would still say what she does right now.
    - Bring back the beating heart in the attic.
    Haunted Mansion Holiday:
    - The Gargoyles would whisper what they normally do, along with creepy versions of line from Christmas carols. An example would be “Deck the halls with bones, so jolly. Tee hee hee.”
    - Changing portraits would be changed like the rest. They would be Nightmare Before Christmas themed.
    - The Wax Candle Man room would be mostly the same. The main difference would be that instead of regular candles, they’re scented candles. The room would smell really nice until you get to the Candle Man. You would also see he has a half melted label that reads something like “Rotting Corpse.”
    - The Man Eating Plant room. Is this where the wreath is? Ha! No! The wreath is where he normally is. The plant in this room is the same except that it’s in sync with Kidnap the Sandy Claws and shares a slight resemblance to the plants in the choir. Not a giant version of the plants in the choir, just a resemblance.
    - Captain Gore’s room would just be a Christmas party that you crashed. That’s it.
-The Mystery House would be a lead in to the ballroom. The ghosts would be making their way to the party.
-The attic would be the most different room. Instead of the paths leading to one of Constance’s husbands, they would lead to one of five characters. These would be the three jack in the boxes that are already in the holiday attic, the vampire teddy bear, the snake eating the naughty-nice list, that creepy duck toy, and a bone rooster sitting on top of a piano being played by a ghost.
-Constance would be in a more festive dress rather than her bridal gown and have different lines. What these lines are I haven’t figured out yet.
-The Hatbox Ghost could have a Santa hat on top of the hat he’s already wearing along with the little pin thing he already has.
-The skeletons in the crypts would have Santa hats on them.
-Instead of Oogie Boogie replacing the hitchhiking ghosts, he would stand along side them. The hitchhiking ghosts would also be wearing festive attire.
Thoughts? I’m probably going to edit this over and over again as the days go by, and new ideas come.

My two cents: Lightweight headsets Bluetooth audio from the Doombuggy in order to enhance or fill out, add depth and immersion into the sounds. Sounds are often lost by variations in the speaker volumes or locations, at least last time I was there in 2015. But there's more! With typical 3 DOF-type sensors in the headset, the sound would focus on what you are looking at. If you want to keep head-tracking Madame Leota after you pass by on the way to the ballroom or following one of my favorites, the Singing Busts in the graveyard. The guest gets real immersion in what interests them as well as the full sound of all that goes on if not looking at any particular featured scene and in the background when "focused". As noted in other comments about the lobby and stretching room, it just seems to get noisier and noisier every day and in a trackless vehicle with (presumably) no shell as the track Doombuggy currently has, you surely get the enjoyment of hearing more of people's opinions and discussions. That kind of impolite self-centeredness can, and IMO certainly does, crash the intended experience of the Haunted Mansion. And for the final touch, Little Leota then gets the added "job" of reminding you to drop off your headset as you pass by her lest you suffer a horrible fate as the eternal "hang-in" for the Ghost Host in the Stretching Room when he needs a break - to go for a stretch, I suppose. Or would he be doing the opposite... well, anyway.

I remember I had an idea similar to yours, but with the haunted mansion holiday decor- now hear me out at least. Remember how at the beginning of the nightmare before Christmas, there were all the doors for the different holidays? Well, I thought many years ago, it would be a neat idea to go through them to see how Jack and the citizens of Halloween town would take those holidays over in Tim Burtonesque style. Of course, they'd be strange and Bizzare, yet would still be charming, and offer a glimpse of what could be if jack took over another holiday. Nevertheless, I love both Mansion(s)- overlays?- respectively and feel as if these additions would be the epitome of the haunted mansion itself.

The one thing I’d change is reverting the black widow bride’s appearance back to how she looked when the ride first opened. Where her only visible features were her glowing yellow eyes, a pulsing red light for her beating heart, and the ethereal blue wedding dress. All other features shrouded in pitch black shadows with the addition of a bloody axe in one hand and a candlestick in the other with a ghostly blue flame burning at the tip of the candle.
I find this appearance to be far more striking and frightening compared to her current design. And it’s also symbolic of the loss of her humanity in becoming so evil in life that in death she is merely a shadow of who she was in life with very little resemblance of ever being human at all. Becoming closer to a demon in appearance because of her evil actions in life.

I loved this video, so I decided to share some ideas of my own!
The trackless Doom Buggies aka Doom Buggies 2.0 would give the house more of an exploring feel! With that you could go where were your buggie takes you then return to the group for the important scenes.
The first idea I have (now I know it may not work as the DL HM is smaller and older, but it's worth a shot) Going down the endless hallway for a way out. You go down the hallway of creaking, opening doors and torches on the walls, maybe add some more changing paintings until you reach the end of the hallway with the floating candelabra and a disbodied voice shouting at you to "GO BACK!" and your buggie gets pulled backward, allowing you to return to the other buggies.
The second idea expands on the door idea. How there could be other rooms that you can see other ghosts in. This would be a room that has a ghost in her bed tossing and turning, trying to sleep as the party in the ballroom is disturbing her undead beauty sleep. There is an angry ghost cat at the foot of her bed hissing at you as well as the ghost's husband coming out of the extra door on the side, a bathroom, yelling at you with his fist in the air for adding to the disturbance of his wife's sleep, maybe add some toilet paper on his foot for a gag.
The third idea is just adding to the ghosts and scenery in the graveyard. I feel that scene is rushed when it is supposed to be the best part of the ride! Add some new ghosts, like a plague doctor and a plague victim. The plague doctor pouring some unknown potion on his patient as the patient laughs. The scenery could be more trees and a moon! To add that there are 999 happy haunts, add some more tombstones near the back with the trees and skyline.
Those are my silly suggestions! Hope you enjoyed them!

For instance, at WDW we could see out the window behind the ghost trying to escape it's coffin. What do we see outside for instance? Daydreaming about how I would plus attractions is one of my favourite things to do in the park, just letting my mind wander. More videos like this please!

I never noticed that the gargoyles spoke/whispered! I guess it’s always been too loud and I always left as soon as the doors open because I was too excited to get on the ride

I love how you chose to "plus" the Haunted Mansion by using the Corridor of Doors to expand the attraction and include interesting and fun concepts which were abandoned for various reasons through the development of the attraction for various reasons. You brought in some really interesting ideas and I wish some of them could be included in the ways you introduced them.
I was fortunate enough to meet Marc Davis, Xavier Attencio, and Tony Baxter while I worked at Disneyland in the early 1990's. See both the inside of the attraction with the lights on as well as the area around the Show Building. Unfortunately the land needed to expand the scenes off of the Corridor of Doors is occupied by three large natural gas storage containers for Fantastic, the Sound Room for Pirates of The Caribbean, and the Show Building for Pirates of the Caribbean itself.
The room for Madame Leota's seance is significantly larger than what is actually used, as is the cemetery. Additionally if more back stage workshops are moved offsite as were done with the expansion of Batuu, the back portion of the Show Building for Haunted Mansion technically could be added onto and the attraction could be made longer.
With this being said; it would be a hard sell changing a "people eating" attraction like the Omni-Mover over to to a slower load-unload system of the Trackless Ride systems with both Park-Ops and corporate. The other hard sell being, will these additions actually get butts through the turnstile when the existing attraction already draws HUGE numbers as it is?
The bottom line being-you might sell the corporate big wigs on plussing the attraction with inexpensive polishes and upgraded special effects than on a major expansion to a very popular attraction.

I feel like it would be really cool to have Dr. Facilier’s tombstone from Princess and the Frog to be hidden somewhere around or in the ride, as like a fun little Easter Egg. It would fit with the theming with New Orleans Square, since that’s where the movie takes place, especially since Splash Mountain is changing into a Princess and the Frog-themed ride!!

In the Princess and the Frog movie, you can actually see Madame Leota's tombstone during a scene in a graveyard.

I would live to see the “museum of the weird” in its entirety as part of the walk out of the attraction. so, it would become another attraction within the attraction, after little leota.

One thing I would change if I was given free reign is to make it feel more like you're actually moving through the rooms of a house. Currently the transitions between scenes does not feel like I'm exploring an actual house.

Even though the Haunted Mansion isn't necessarily scary, I'm always comforted by the fact that there are people around me at all times while I'm on the ride even if I can't really see them because of the shape of the Doom Buggies. So,u a trackless system with much more space between cars would probably deter me to be uncomfortable *just* enough to maybe not enjoy the ride as much. But, I do see how a trackless system would work well and that it could be implemented in some way in a Haunted Mansion 2.0 some time in the future!

I just got back from Disney World last week, and the Haunted Mansion was easily the ride my wife and I rode the most, and one thing we noticed everytime on this particular trip, is it was way too darkly lit. Yes, I get they are setting atmosphere and tone, and yes, they are trying to hide effects and control illusions, but coming from someone who has ridden the ride several times in the past, I was left squinting to see stuff. If I hadn't ridden it before, I wouldn't have known what I was looking at a lot of the time. They need to increase the brightness just a smidge at least.
