  • This is a Motormouth couple car review comparing the all-new Toyota Grand Highlander to the slightly smaller Toyota Highlander. Both have room for up to 8 passengers, over three rows. The Toyota Highlander and Toyota Grand Highlander share two powertrains, a gas and hybrid. The gas powertrain is a 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder with an 8-speed automatic transmission, the Highlander has 264 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, the Grand Highlander 1 extra horsepower. Standard AWD in Canada. In the US, FWD and AWD options are available.
    The hybrid has a 2.5L 4-cylinder matched to an ECVT with a combined 243 horsepower. In Canada, standard electronic on demand AWD. In the US FWD and AWD options are available.
    Where they differ is in the next powertrain, the Toyota Grand Highlander also has a Hybrid Max with a 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder, a 6-speed automatic transmission with a combined 362 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, standard full-time electronic AWD. You can put regular fuel in both the Toyota Highlander and Toyota Grand Highlander.
    The Toyota Highlander and Toyota Grand Highlander are 7-8 passenger SUVs. The gas and 2.5L Hybrid models have very similar interiors in both the Grand Highlander and Highlander. We would say they are Toyota grade interiors, the Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid Max more of a Lexus grade interior. However, the Highlander top trim with the caramel leather interior does look quite upscale. The Toyota Highlander comes standard with cloth upholstery, the Grand Highlander SofTex. Higher trims of the Highlander have SofTex upholstery, available leather. The Grand Highlander also has available leather upholstery and exclusive on the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max model leather and faux suede. There’s also a 10-way adjustable driver seat for the Grand Highlander, 8-way for the Highlander. You do get more standard features in the Grand Highlander, but you will pay more for it. To get similar features as the Grand Highlander base XLE model whether it’s the gas or hybrid models, you have to move up to the Highlander XLE. You will only pay an extra $1,000-$1300 in Canada and the US for the Grand Highlander XLE compared to the Highlander XLE. There’s actually pretty good value with the Grand Highlander considering the extra space you get for only a little more money. These numbers are based on the AWD models.
    The Grand Highlander has a standard 12.3” touchscreen, the Highlander an 8”, available 12.3”. Some other standard features on the Grand Highlander that are only available on higher trims of the Highlander include, a wireless charger, power rear door, power passenger seat and a heated steering wheel.
    There are a few features the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max has that the Highlander does not, they ventilated rear seats and premium leather seats with suede accents.

    I tested them all and chose the Honda pilot without hesitation. V6 naturally aspirated engine, smooth 10-speed automatic transmission and rides really nice, not like a boat. Imo even Telluride was much nicer than G-highlander but reliability was a big question mark!

    I drive GH gasoline and have absolutely no problem passing by. I noted that I passed one semi starting at around 60 mph and finished at 100. No extra weight of hybrid batteries, motors, wiring and other avoidable parts really makes a difference for the benefit of a gasoline engine I am loving so much.

    • @Zeek800

      The hybrid battery isn’t that heavy and there is no rear differential on the hybrid models. Then again the hybrids have several electric motors. I think in our 2023 Rav 4 Limited hybrid the weight difference with a gas Limited was about 200-300 lbs. Toyota doesn’t give torque numbers but on the 2023 RAV4 the 0-60 time is 7.8 seconds for the gas and 7.3 for the 5he hybrid. My co worker has the gas Limited and it is slower “ ( but not slow ) and noisier than the Limited. Turn the power mode dial to “Sport” and this thing hops from 60 mph to 85 in a hurry. 13:35

      I traded my Venza hybrid for the Regular Highlander Limited 2.4 turbo. While the hybrid is fast off the light, it doesn’t have passing power on a 2 lane road. The gas turbo passes much better, which makes it a safer overall pick. I think, like me, after trying a hybrid, people will go back to the gas.

Went to Cypress Mountain BC last December 2023 with NOKIAN TYRES HAKKAPELIITTA 10 Tyres on it and it handled well. love that you 2 did this video! I was actually hoping you would. Regarding the pricing btwn the highlander vs grand highlander, (just guessing now) do you think that Toyota is purposely making the Grand Highlander more attractive because it can be intimidating to drive and OWN (in general) a bigger vehicle. We have 2 growing kids, and my wife said to me "do we really need to get something that big? I think the Highlander is good enough".

    Where were the driving dynamics comparisons? Some had complained about having a bit of car-sickness in the rear portions of the Grand Highlander. Do they both ride like boats? Are they purely utilitarian with a bit of luxury thrown in?
    Not everyone who desires an SUV has a family to haul around. I’d like to see Toyota turn the Highlander into a two-row vehicle, with lots of storage, and a more fun and energetic powertrain, with a reasonably compliant ride, yet not boaty.

  • @rxurph
    @rxurph Před 4 měsíci +5

    Grand highlander is too big to be supported by the 4cylinder. Actual mpg is much higher than estimated for the grand highlander because of the weak engine. The hybrid max engine is better power but it’s not gas saving nor money saving. Both cars don’t offer bench seating for the premium tiers for fuel efficiency compliance.

    I want to share a seatbelt problem in our 2024 Highlander -
    In the third row, when child booster seats are put in, the belts can’t be easily clasped in.
    Our highly capable 7 & 10 yr olds can’t get them clasped without an adult squeezing in to help. These kids can easily click themselves and their boosters into any of our other cars. Even a tremendous amount of adult strength jostling the booster doesn’t always do it.
    So there’s a problem with the belts’ red receivers position in the third row bench not allowing enough room for the width of a booster seat.
    We paid a fortune for this car and waited 7 months, and now this!

    Yes, TX 350 will have base 2.4 L turbo engine.
    But I will agree with Zack, this engine is enough.

    It feels almost pointless to talk about the hybrids. My Toyota dealer (Port Moody) laughed me out of the place a few weeks ago when I said I wanted to order a hybrid suv. Said theyve closed orders on all future hybrid suvs because the waiting lists are all over 3 years. They feel like vapourware!

    Overpriced as with Honda, sending buyers to Hyundai/Kia where they will get an engine failure sooner or later. So is it worth paying more for Toyota? That’s up to you .

    • @Tom-dz6yo
      @Tom-dz6yo Před 4 měsíci

      I don't agree that u can expect engine failure with Hyundai or Kia. You have to do your homework and only target those models that have some history of reliability with the power train. Be aggressive with your preventive maintenance and they'll last as long as any Toyota. I've owned both. Toyota's fall apart if not maintained too. If people want to blindly buy Toyota and pay their 25% premium go ahead. Not me. My current 2017 Kia Sorento top trim SXL came with the well respected 3.3l V6 and 6 speed auto that came out 15 years ago and proven reliable. It is well maintained, and with frequent oil changes. Going on 85k with zero issues. Sounds and rides today the same as new. We drove the Highlander too and didn't like it as much as the Sorento. Couple that with good $ on our trade and $11k off list, it was a no brainer at the time. Even if the engine/trans goes out, which I don't expect, after the 100k warranty I can buy a whole new power train with the savings.

    You know the saying. The bigger the vehicle, the more scratches and dents it will receive from parking lots because people need to get out of their smaller, beater cars and people don’t care about your big vehicle barely fit in the parking spot(if it is parked correctly)😮
