Thanks a lot. Great content as usual. I could not however hear the preacher--the sound was far too low--I had to kkep on turning the volume way up to hear him and way down when you were speaking.
the video with the sermon gave me the vibe of a little kid worrying. Sometimes a little kid will say something like " what if rains and then it doesn't stop raining then everything is under water and then the whole world is under water and then we all live under water ". If you are good with kids you can use it as a teachable moment to explain rain. I feel like that is the level of logic he was employing if we let them reproduce their kids will be the same then there will be hundreds of thousands of drinkers then we can't have society. Well, no, people can be rehabilitated, and there are a lot of people who grew up with drunks and never touch a bottle. That video gave me a really weird feeling.
It’s because the ancient worldview was infantile. They were basically cavemen who could speak. Most of society was stupid like this, until the enlightenment and education kicked in (2 centuries ago).
8:29 Awesome, thanks. 28:58 : an apologist could call this epistemological approach a noble lie (or helpful fiction) too. how does one know those starting axioms (criteria for knowledge) are justified? (without question-begging and pulling a Moorean shift). look up the problem of the criterion. it's a huge “problem” in epistemology. it's a very technical topic in philosophy, so forgive me for being a nerd here. but it's interesting stuff to ponder.
I would argue with that apologist tho. It's not a noble lie to say what JWit has said. Rather, it is the most we can confidently say about the situation in which we find ourselves. More precisely, it is the most we can say WITHOUT lying to ourselves about that reality. Anything more than what he has said here would venture into the realm of hypothesis at best... and fiction at worst.
@ichapod in the debate community I am in, even non-theists argue about what sources of knowledge there are and which are justified. Is it just the things we can experience with our senses and reduce to the natural sciences? What about things like logic, morality, and concepts like truth, value, meaning, and identity over time? Super interesting to me, personally.
In response to that pastor talking about parasites (drug addiction as an example) ; my little brother is an alcoholic, so I did my research. (Neuro) Science has shown that in some of these cases, there is little the individual can do about it and needs external help (rather than capital punishment). Seem like an all-knowing God would understand this. It is very much like the example Jwit often uses about the virginity test being faulty. Even if the apologist wants to say God allowed and used the ways of the culture at that time and via gradually progressive change brought improvement, it still does not make sense to allow faulty methodology which leads to immoral outcomes.
Yeah, it's a very weird argument to say "God is the source of objective morality," but then every time we turn around 'god' is basing his moral commands off of what ppl at only a certain period in time would have agreed with and been able to comfortably perform in light of their sitzen laben 🤷🏾
pet peeve incoming :P that new avatar by jwit is very distracting with all the colors blasting on screen. maybe others are distracted by it too. if not, then just ignore me.
Greetings - love the podcasts. With all do respect, J-wit needs to solve his mic issues. It’s extremely annoying. Hard to keep listening. Try moving closer to the mic and reducing his volume. In love, brothers
I actually had been saying the same myself. We got online to handle that a few days ago. Check out the most recent Nurch. I think I solved the problem. I may need to turn my volume up just a little, but your feedback would be appreciated.
Just wanted to add--you are not reading too much J. Wit into a very painful attack on black communities. This pastor is using right wing talking points to castigate and humiliate blacks as many pastors do on a Sunday morning.
Faith Destroying Apologetics? I find it amusing that his concern is that facts, evidence, and better arguments can damage a Christian’s ability to play make believe. Heaven forbid they live in a truth based reality😂
Yo That whole "Pookies & Ray Rays shit sounds wild racist 🤦🏿♂️and "Im not saying we should kill these peoole" well shit thats what the Bible is saying.... So wait WFT are you saying again!? 😂

Reminds me of my Adventist days
Great episode
42:01 re: Apologetics - "Once the arguments don't do it for you anymore, it was never about that anyway."

One way to describe an apologists is a person who insists you wear rose-color glasses while reading the Bible. Oh and keep them on while doing life.

We been working on it. Think we got it straight now.

YES! and it's another slick ass way to get us to hate ourselves via this religion smh 🤦🏿♂️😂

Very counterintuitive, ain't it?
