- r/ProRevenge - OP was getting out of the military and moving from one state to another and decided to use the military's moving service. This moving company didn't show up to his moving date not once, but three times! When they finally showed up, turns out they had left some of OP's things out in the rain and damaged a couch! The moving company refuses to pay for the damages and sends a bad cheque, which leads OP to report them to the local news outlet. This ends up with an internal investigation with the military and the moving company is then FIRED!

Story #3 is why you never mess with the person in charge of keeping your things running. There's the manual, and then there's years or decades of actual experience with how things work and the manual doesn't tell you about.

Lowest bidder, absolutely. Mil. Spec. or Military Grade is just that. A Grade on a piece of paper. Looks GREAT on paper but it's not gonna happen with Military Contractors. It takes a Capitalist Company that can charge enough to actually pay for the R&D to truly meet that Grade. So yes, Mil. Spec. that's available on the Civilian Market is generally damn near indestructible.

As a military spouse, yes... we have had to deal with crappy moving companies A LOT.
The movers in charge of bringing my sister and her husband stuff back from Guam when he got out of the Navy destroyed so much of their stuff it wasn’t even funny. Though, to their credit, from what I understand they pretty much sucked it up and paid for it all.

As a disabled vet the first story warmed my heart..
Moving companies are just like any business, it depends on who runs the place. There are good ones who will do right by you, and there are shady ones. Source: me; i used to work for a moving company who still has a contract with the military. We did the work honestly. Screw ups happened because, you know, humans (never like that though, that was pure stupidity/negligence), but we always did right by the customer.
I have always said it doesn't matter so much if something happens, what matters is how the company handles it when it does. My favorite was when my car died. It was going to be in the shop for a few days so I needed to rent. We had just had a blizzard and bitter cold temps so the rental company had a rush. I was waiting to get picked up when the manager called me and told me he had a problem AND a solution. The check engine light went on when he was driving to pick me up so he couldn't let me take the car. There were no more on the lot but they were getting more from a nearby city later that day. He could pick me up and take me to work, then deliver the car to me at my work in the afternoon. You bet I used the same rental company from then on.

I moved from South Carolina to Alabama and the moving company we used took 3 EXTRA weeks to deliver my stuff and also broke the frame to my bed which was an antique. Long story short they had to pay me almost $10,000 in damages for the bed frame and also for the lateness. They learned the hard way not to mess with someone with nothing better to do.

Last story: and that, dear boys and girls, is why you don't mess around with the maintenance people. You have no idea what goes on when the doors are locked up. By them terminating him, he literally saved other employees from being injured due to management negligence.

Even if they ordered him to leave the notebook behind, MG has the option to NOT give it to them... It's his private property. MG has written his own manual.

I feel like I've heard that last story regarding the notebook before! If what I remember is right they tried to Sue him later regarding the notebook but it was thrown out in court because that notebook was legally his, And therefor they could not sue him for disposing of his own personal property. I also think they had to reimburse him for the wrongful firing

The Army contracted movers for my move, they showed up on time and delivered on scheduled. No problems.

Yep, lots of horrible moving companies. When our office closed (not military), Out of about 20 families who used a moving company to move to another office, almost everyone had trouble. My hubby and I used a moving truck and moved ourselves and we were one of the few with no problems or losses.
Unfortunately, in US many moving companies are corrupt and will hold items basically hostage for increased fees.
The last story tells how companies today treat good employees badly to get a higher profit. The lady could have been killed because the company refused to buy new equipment because not wanting to spend money to keep profits up
I had a really bad experience handling a moving company that claimed to be of international standards. This company won the bid during the tendering process. They turned out to be mostly unprofessional, cancelling appointments at the last minute, not showing up to appointments, things are broken or damaged when received, once they even sent a container to a wrong location that is a hundred miles away. Just horrible.
Moving company stole my grandmas old vintage and antique Christmas decorations, that you can’t replace and they do the make them anymore. Christmas decorations from the 1940s/1960s gone after we moved the first time. T
In MG's place, I'd have surrendered the box cutter and badge. When asked for the notebook, I'd tell them "Sorry, my notebook falls under personal effects. You can't have it, I have big plans for it."
Respect is the standard for interactions, but it may be lost. In the end you don't know the stranger so you begin with courtesy and see if they deserve to lose it.
We’ve moved so, so many times! A few years ago we finally hired a moving company because we’re getting older and finally making enough money. They broke our $2,000 tv, scratched up a bunch of stuff and then offered us like $200. It was ridiculous! We did the next move on our own.
Here's a story of how Reddit got so big it was because in 2009 it's rival Digg changed their algorithm from topics to power users and everyone hated it and moved to Reddit Shirl afterward. I'm not sure if Digg is still up but boy oh boy hahaha. I heard it may had changed to add some more ad revenue.

Moving companies as a whole tend to be shady. I've had to move a few times and there is ALWAYS a box or more that gets "misplaced", likely into the home of one of the employees. Always.
1st one: The military will give the highest price for the least work, but if they catch you trying to screw them, you're toast.
This is why my cousin (US Army artillery crewman) Had all his stuff flown from Germany to Texas, then drove a U-Haul to Colorado.
I gather most of his friends do the same wherever possible, as the Army pays for the rental.
Nothing is worse than these guys showing up at your front door:
1. The IRS
2. FBI
3. CIA
4. SWAT
5. The military
He could deny their request for his notebook because that is his personal property. Destroying it was far sweeter though.

The story about the maintenance guy really resonated with me.
I used to work in a position that had a lot of the regular maintenance and checkups to do every week and every month just so the main factory production could run (not electrical work, just mechanical and line maintenance/changing of production equipment to fit the work orders) and I can tell you, that like 60-80% of our work was "invisible" if it was done right and on time. There was like 8 of us for 3 shifts that handled one big department that spread over a large-ish building. A lot of walking, a lot of stuff regularly breaking down (especially the labor intensive to maintain, automated machines that needed regular cleaning and maintenance). At first we had a pretty good time making it all work, keeping the maintenance covered. Our supervisor told us that if our work is done and everything is working, we can wait for things to go wrong and do minor things that are low-priority and mostly low-effort or sharing our knowledge with each other, which meant a lot of talking and a joking atmosphere, we were a bunch of goofballs but we worked together rather well and stuff was done right.
Well, that did not appeal to regular line workers who constantly reported us to higher management for "slacking off" even though we were paid better than they are. So we got increasingly more and more responsibilities from the management that the supervisor was ordered to pass down onto us. Anything that was not clearly defined for regular line operators fell onto us. It got ridiculous. Then when the most important and labor intensive machines broke down and required hours to fix correctly by more than one person (they were working pretty abysmally even when every maintenance was done on time), the rest of our responsibilities went unchecked and unfinished. We ended up busting our butts most days, rarely having time for a regular break or staying overtime just to make it all work. We kept telling management that we need more people, our supervisor was trying to push for more people as well but was always denied, because management did not see the problem (because we tried to fulfill our responsibilities at great sacrifice to us personally so all the stuff worked as it could and should). At some point I had enough and calmly informed my supervisor that if things dont change within a month or 2 that I am walking away. And so I did.
I heard form a friend that still works there as a production line supervisor that the department has had many line re-allocations (physical moves around the building to use space "more efficiently" or whatever), our team got even more spread out and separated into different subdivisions, but apparently now it can all work with less people at similar efficiency. Some of the guys I worked with have since left the company as well, I am not really sure what changed so much that the work got better, neither is my friend. It all seems as fucked up as ever to her.
I loved the last story that guy was totally savage.

Moved across the US about 2 years ago. The moving company showed up late with a smaller truck than we paid for, broke the furniture and stole my son's bike. Movers are creeps and I'll use Uhaul from now on!

My grandparents dealt with a really shady moving company when they decided to move from California to Indiana. The company was supposed to be moving my grandfather's personal truck, a bunch of plants, and some other items, to be delivered in a week. It ended up taking MONTHS before they got their things. During that time all the plants had died and rotted leaving behind a horrible smell. The truck also came with a BUNCH of extra miles on it, reeking of cigarettes (my grandparents did not smoke). They had to take the company to court over it all to get reimbursed the moving costs which they had prepaid, the damages, plus some extra. In the end the company ended up shutting down.
I loved the story of the maintainance guy. People could argue about how he just let things run so long instead of letting the company take care of it properly. But waste not a preach for deaf ears and whatnot I guess. The outcome was deserved in the end.
On that first story about the moving company that screwed over a veteran, I want to have many more people that did that too. I hope they bunch of them ended up in jail. That just pisses me off when some companies do this stuff and some people.

If a company who has contacts with the government starts messing with u, always go to the news, my mum was having trouble with a government agency and ended up on the news talking about it and suddenly they had everything she needed

I love the 3rd revenge, that was genius! As far as moving companies and there unethical practices. This is a regular issue. I had a company move me from Hartland, WI to Waukesha and during the move they rammed my couch into the hallway wall leaving a whole the size of a basketball. They tried to say it was there before they moved me, but they didn't know I video recorded the final walk through in which the wall was shown because a picture had been hung on the wall and I made a comment of having fixed the push pin holes. My ex-landlord took them to court and they ended up having to fix the wall AND have the carpets steam cleaned because of there boots damaging the carpet.
Cheating people is a disgusting thing too do in there first place, but cheating an armed forces veteran (and a disabled one at that!) stinks to high heaven. 😠👎🏼

I did that. We had a book with all of the steps that went into doing everything that was compiled by my friend I trained. I didn’t need it, so I took it home and destroyed it. When I finally quit because I couldn’t take HR harassing me anymore, they no idea how to do anything. It was glorious. Be careful who you fuck with.
There are some really shady movers working military moves. My last one stole my antique fishing poles/gear, and a huge rotating composter. And that, is just what I noticed. I filed a claim, but.. Yeah... That did nothing, and it wasn't enough to fight over when I had too many other issues at the time.
My MIL worked with a Moving Company for years. The family-owned company was very, very well run (also expensive). They had military and Johnson & Johnson contracts all the time because they were such a reputable company.
Vets should know that threatening to report them to the Veteran's Affairs Department which would result in them losing their contract can be effective.
I have used Two Men and a Truck twice and I love them so it isn't all moving companies

..When I was young, my family moved around quite a bit. My Dad's job was not military, but was a government job.
The motto of his job back then was, "move to improve."
On one of those many moves, the moving company brought boxes with already marked check box areas to indicate where the items came from. (bedroom, living room, kitchen, garage, etc)
When we received those boxes, EVERY box was labeled, "miscellaneous."
Unfortunately, they truly were.
Each box was very random like containing a pot from the kitchen, a pillow from a bedroom, and a light shade from the living room.
I remember my Mom telling me it was like Christmas to where every box contained unknown surprises.

Wife of a retired military vet. here. We general had good movers. But the two who were bad were really bad. The first, I and my children decided to move closer to my parents while hubby served in Cali. then overseas. The people who packed up our belongings stole some meds I really, really needed. And being dumb and naive I didn't call the police. These meds were already packed up in my personal stuff, btw. Then they didn't pack my coat closet with a lot of other stuff in it. For some reason I didn't check the rest of the house, probably because along with taking care of 2 young kiddos, I was also taking care of my elderly FIL who was in the beginning stages of dementia and required a lot of attention. But come to find out they left a bunch of stuff in the kitchen, mostly cleaning items, but still. Plus some cherished things from my daughter's nursery.
It's moving companies in general. CZcamsr Matthew Santoro was abused by a moving company when he left the US to move back home to Canda. It was a complete mess because they removed a lot of his expensive items. I've always used U-Haul. And unless I'm moving to a shoebox flat, I'll always do everything by myself.
Moving company one reminded me of one of my Favorite CZcamsr (hint: Matt S.) and his moving company nightmare.
I've heard all of these before and they are all great. I particularly love the last one.

Story #3: Yeah. Know your rights. This was HIS notebook and HIS notes. Even if they tried they could not have taken those. Because it's HIS! But well done anyways!! I think I would have burned that thing or shredded it. So it's 100% non saveable 😅
Our problem with the military movers wasn't quite as bad. They had us packed up by 11, and said they would meet us on base at 1. Finally show up at 8:30 that night and were just going to do a drop and run. I refused to sign anything until they at least set up the bed and crib. My husband had surgery at 5 the next morning on his wrists. So here I was with a three month old baby, a husband who couldn't do anything, and a house full of boxes. The movers went through our boxes and took several mementos of ours from tours overseas. We did file an official complaint, but never did get our stuff back. The company was also blacklisted after that though.
I would have instead taken said notebook to my vehicle, and then when they asked for it tell them "my personal property is not company property, i showed you my personal notes so you could see how needed my work is, as you have just fired me, i have no reason to give you MY personal notes. that notebook is akin to thousands of hours of work, and as i know you guys are being told to cut costs, you can't afford to buy it from me.. So this will go one of 2 ways: rehire me under a contract, or you will have to replace *counts off list of run down machines* and raise costs substantially."

Plus, it reveals who the shitty moving company is so others who see this and plan to move soon know which company to avoid

My then fiancée now wife moved using a service. The DAY OF the move, the movers show up to take her stuff and on the spot demanded we pay more money after they loaded everything on to the truck and this is after having a final quote. They took everything we had in cash to cover the inflated price cause we felt we had no choice at the time as we were moving from NJ to FL that day. We had to take a path avoiding as many tolls as possible and barely made it with the funds we had available. And the moving company was not only late in delivery, but refused to talk to us about the inflated fees and did not even set up a locker as was agreed on

Anything contracted for the military is horrible. I had an oral surgeon the Army sent me too. He put me out without telling me. I woke up in a completely different place than I was put asleep. On a follow up he flushed put the wounds without telling me and i nearly passed out. Just the worst!

Okay, here is my moving company story. I wasn't a veteran but moved many many times for private companies. I had many moves where they were holding me hostage (Pay a price that was expected but before they opened the doors to the truck, they insist that I pay them an additional "tip amount per employee", multiple hundreds of dollars or they wouldn't take anything off the truck.). I didn't feel I had a choice. They already were more that 8 hours delayed and got to my new assortment after 9pm. Side they wouldn't move anything in, until they got cash plus the ransom, by the time they moved everything in, it was after midnight. I didn't know whether I should file a police report but they made me nervous that they would come to my place and rough me up or my stuff. This was a long time ago before camera phones or the internet.
If this was these days, I would have started my video recording on my iPhone at least to have a audio recording of the shake down. That was only one issue I had with movers so I wasn't surprised when I heard this youtube video of other people haven't gotten screwed by movers
Regarding moving companies: My family and I have moved around a fair bit, and typically just downsized all our crap to the point we could move ourselves. Our recent move however was a different story. I had an entire granny-flat worth of various furniture and geek related crafting tools/supplies that I didn't want to get rid of. So, combined with the regular household stuff a typical 3-person family has, we decided to get a mover for all the large furniture and my horde of geek stuff. I was a bit worried, as I've heard all kinds of horror stories, and when the movers came, it seemed like just a pair of random Joe's with a modestly sized truck, coupled with a mild language barrier, as it was obvious that English wasn't their first language.
Turns out, I had nothing to worry about. They were fast, friendly, and went above and beyond to ensure nothing was damaged, despite the crazy amount of stuff they managed to Tetris into the back of the truck, even my super fragile display boards for my assorted geekery. If I remembered the name of the company, I'd give them a shout out, but it was a year ago now, and we've not kept and documentation from them. Still, awesome guys who did great work. 10/10, Would recommend to a friend or work colleague.

One time I was helping a church friend move their grandparents stuff in a new home. The moving destroyed a bunch old an expesive stuff. Like a old record player from 40 50 and a bunch more cool old stuff. Which meant the guys she hired just threw the stuff in and improperly put them in. Don't know what happened after that.
Had to deal with military movers on several occasions. I lost gaming consoles, games, military boots (new), recording systems (vcr) and some small knickknacks. The military paid for the loses but at an adjudicated rate, normally less than new rate. They would sometimes pay you for the close best available. All I can say is take pictures, document and record.
My Dad lost a really nice reel to reel stereo ( in the 1970's). It must have walked off of the moving truck on it's own. We did a few cross country moves for the Air Force. It happened somewhere between South Carolina and California.
Sounds like our piano that must have walked off the truck by itself. My dad (also in the Air Force and we were moving from Texas to SC) supervised it all being loaded but when the truck FINALLY arrived, the piano was missing. My dad was pissed!
Hired a local company to move us while I was pregnant. I had made some pizza eggrolls for lunch in the wok my hubby bought me in Philly's Chinatown - my pride & joy. Hubby has to go to work just as the movers were clearing the kitchen, and I was herding our 3 sons at this point, so I wasn't in the room while they packed the kitchen off.
Fast forward to the next day. I'm setting up the kitchen & can't find my wok. When hubby got home, we looked through every box, then called the moving company to file a report about missing items (the wok & all the utensils). They gave us a claim number, & said they'd get back to us.
2 days later, we get a bill for cleaning out their truck. Seems someone decided that they liked the wok So much that they put it in the cab STILL FULL OF OIL, presumably so I would think it was just lost somewhere in the jumble. The main office manager was Not too happy when she put 2+2 together and realized it would cost the company over $300 if I decided to go to small claims court over this.
$150 cash and a small shipment of Omaha steaks later, my hubby went back to Chinatown & bought another wok set for $25 - same as the last set.
Oh, and the crew that packed our house? Seems we were the 5th claim against them, but the only one with proof that they'd taken stuff. Can you say "No Unemployment", boys and girls??????😁
I come from a military family, and I have some moving horror stories. The most infamous is when my dad was returning from Korea after finishing a tour of duty there patrolling the border. Since family weren't really allowed he went on his own and lived there for a year. On his return trip to the US his belongings were all packed up in a number of crates, among these were a computer ( a Gateway or a Tandy not sure which now ) and several family heirlooms ( handmade quilts ). He arrived back to the States and we waited for his shipment... and we waited.... and waited... several phone calls and we discovered it was lost. Then several months later the shipment arrived at our house with his belongings... but it was a single box with dirty, mildewed clothing, broken plates, and it all smelled of bad kimchi. Everything else was gone!
After a long argument with them that led to the involved of JAG and Interpol. The company had been hiding the fact that someone was breaking into their warehouse and stealing crates, then selling the items at the local markets in Busan ( known as Pusan at the time ) and Seoul. The company paid us for the lost items, I'm not sure how much since it was the 90's and I was still fairly young then. But I do know that there was a lot more fallout from it from the investigations that were launched.
I've moved several times and only once did I have a good experience. I've experienced the usual problems; arriving too late, rough handling of fragile items, not putting boxes in the correct and clearly marked rooms etc. But, the worst happened to me twice. I had drivers hold my belongings hostage until they were given a bribe to unload the truck. I'd planned to tip, but this was their way of assuring a tip. Another time, the movers were one or two minutes into a new hour. They gave me a choice, pay for the full additional hour or if the tip was large enough, they would only charge me for 15minutes of that last hour.

I guess they weren't kidding with the "military grade" term. The cheapest thing that gets the job done. Like .5% of the time.

That third story has appeared on DarkFluff before. A few weeks ago, I think. Still a good listen though.
The military always goes with the lowest bidder which doesn’t always translate to “best service provided”. Fort Polk was one of the worst examples, the housing office had a lot of dirty tricks available that earned them a tidy little sum and took advantage of me due to my low rank. Low ranking enlisted get taken advantage constantly due to them not knowing how to counter any of these!
I don't know if a moving company with the military is different than a normal one but they don't pay the value of lost items. They pay by the weight. When I moved across country the moving company lost part of my bedroom set. When I went to make a claim they told me it's paid by the weight of the item, not the value.
Paper trail, paper trail. Always have one. Any time I am trying to get something done that involves, ew, other people, I take notes. I ask for name, write down time and date, what we discussed, and any conclusions. I repeat it all back. I staple on any receipts, statements, estimates, whatever.
I have seen it too many times, management has no clue how things actually run and figure any cheap body can do the job. The saddest thing is when they can't tell how badly things are going downhill and blame the business loss on other factors.
This is not a story from a shady mover but a specific employee. My ex started coming home with lots of neat stuff. His story was the guy they were moving said he didn't want it. I found out he was stealing things like decent jewelry, a GPS, etc. I told him he had to give it all back. I told the owner of the moving company in an anonymous call. He fired the guy and called the cops. I left him before it all hit the fan.
Ah this one stings a bit with the first story. Not a vet, but couple years ago mum and I opted to move so she could receive a promotion at work - it required moving out of Cali to another state. There were two moving packages people could opt for, two options of either you get a lump sum and plan stuff yourself or smaller sum and they hire the moving company. Well they didn't send the options in the same order to everyone I guess so somehow mum ended up with the first so we have to schedule things. Oh well. Problems arise in trying to get a date for them to come pack all our stuff up (for whatever reason they had to do it, insurance or something), and even then they showed up hours late so that we didn't get to leave until late, and hadn't brought a big enough truck for all our stuff.
On the drive to the next state we make arrangements for another move to get the rest of our items, arrive at our new place, and set about fixing it up with some appliances. We get assurances that it could take a month to get our stuff, and that Cali has high demand or something. Well a month comes and goes, and we hear nothing from them anymore and turns out the company was sketchy so some of the higher ups ended up being taken to court, the business tried to rename themselves, and...we never heard anything about our stuff again. We simply lost anything that hadn't made it into the car with us so more clothes than our suitcases could hold, pictures, books, movies, CDs, some games/consoles, furniture, computers, collections (I had a variety of models while mum had statues for things she'd enjoyed over the years), dishes, family heirlooms/things with sentimental value, personal artwork, and so many other things. Even trying to create a list for insurance purposes was hard because there's the realization that not every little thing can be accounted for or recalled at the drop of a hat.
Mum's company was really understanding when they heard the news so I believe they gave her money to help with some of the replacing alongside what we received from insurance, but somethings simply can't be replaced.
For a slightly brighter note however we now get to live in a house (which was hard to imagine back in Cali) and we have a doggo and cat we love very much who made things a lot easier. We'd originally wanted to wait for our stuff to arrive and unpack some before adopting, but after two weeks we couldn't hold out anymore
