  • A 4.5 Mile hike in superb mountain scenery. This walk includes a stunning wild swim location in an infinity pool with the view of Buttermere .An old miners track up to Warnscale Bothy, a wild camp location including a fire with amazing views down to Buttermere. Rugged crags and ravine leading up to the summit of Haystacks. The descent route is a scramble route down to Scarth Gap with beautiful views all the way.
Parking at Gatesgarth Farm ,Buttermere( charges apply)
The route starts from Gatesgarth Farm heading to Warnscale Bottom following Warnscale Beck up to the infinity pool and waterfalls. The track heads up on an old miners track underneath the crags on Haystacks to a rugged ravine and Warnscale Bothy. The path then heads up to Blackbeck Tarn and Innominate Tarn, where Wainrights ashes were scattered as be loved this place. It is popular for wild campers now. It isn't far then to the summit of Haystacks on a rocky top with superb views. Head past the Tarn to descend via a section of scrambling down to Scarths Gap. This section is steep but with care quite an easy scramble.

After seeing this video a few days ago I decided to try this route up to Haystacks. So yesterday, I spent my 54th Birthday doing just that. The weather was awful, rain a plenty, cloudy on and off, but we thoroughly enjoyed this route, albeit quite a challenge. Had lunch in the bothy then headed up to Haystacks, loving that walk along, it felt so other worldly. And not a soul to be seen. Celebrated with cake at the summit. Fantastic day so far. Then came the descent. Holy crap!! Probably the scariest experience of our lives. Those scrambles down most definitely not to be done when wet!
But we did it, we survived it. Phew!
Thank you so much for showing us this route Tracey.
    Here's to the next one!

@julie-annehennessy8629 I'm so pleased you did it , I know what you mean the descent is challenging , to do it in the wet must have took nerves of steel. I bet you felt a great sense of achievement afterwards. Happy 54th BTW, here's to many more adventures. I'm posting Eagle Crag round soon , you would love that

Another beautiful walk again. Just love it. The route you did was stunning. I am.not competent enough to do that to be fair. But I would love to do Fleetwoth Pike and Haystacks and take in Warnscsle Botthy for that view. Would take me all day. It's definitely one I would love to do.
    Thank you.

Thank you so much for this one. I have a route going up Fleetwith then over to Haystacks and coming down the track you came up. I have never seen a video on it, so this was perfect to see how it was and the lay of the land. Looks like a great way up or down, no scrambles, and relatively gentle. The waterfalls and Infinity Pool are just icing on the cake for that.

Oh Tracey, this has got to be one of my favourite places in the whole wide world. The tracks, the mountains, tarns and waterfalls are just too beautiful for words. Haystacks with all its knobbly bits is so lovely. I wondered if Wainwright had come back as a duck there on Innominate tarn😀 The view of Gable and Pillar from there is stunning especially with that bit of cloud around it. The light on your way down on Scarth Gap was a bit special too. I've been to Warnscale Bothy a couple of times. The last time I was up with my son but couldn't find it coming from Dubs Hut. He wasn't too pleased ha! Was up on Helvellyn on Monday. The weather was great. Came up by that path by the beck & waterfalls that lead up to Grizedale Tarn and onto Dollywagon. Nice route if you're a scaredy cat like me and don't want to do the edges! Say hello to Andy and Billy. Bye and thanks for sharing your fantastic walk. David

Really good walk that and in decent weather. I've done the walk but in the opposite way to you. Not many views can equal that of looking down the Buttermere valley. Terrific drone footage as always. Very enjoyable watch.

Hi Tracey, the Buttermere area is so stunning, and it always seems like no matter how many times you go there, there’s always something else to explore. Like you I’ve never been up that path from Warnscale Bottom, I’ve always kept left at the junction. A couple of times I’ve meant to head down that path and missed the turning. Haha
Hope you have had a lovely weekend.
    All the best

Although ive done Haystacks a couple of times Ive never used that route up or down or visited the bothy so that looks such a good route to explore. Hi Tracey,
Gatesgarth carpark, so familiar as I left my car there for a week while I did my first survival course from Gatesgarth bothy. Billy dying for someone to throw him a rock.
Several other CZcamsrs have shown the route to the infinity pool, one couple did it in January, but they were early twenties and so still indestructible. They did emerge purple though. I bet another couple of weeks and you will have to queue to get in. I keep looking at your hat wondering if it is a Tilley? As for the bothy, I've seen a video where there was a near punchup as too many people had aimed for it. The videoing couple had a tent and just moved out to avoid the mobile disco partying crowd. Oh for Wainwright with a plasma gun 🔫 😎, bet he looked up from his resting place that night, and had a few choice words to say. How is Billy doing, must be close to 1,100 by now? Great weather you had. Think I know most of those paths, I wonder how many weiry legs have trod that cement path back to Gatesgarth.
    Cheers
    Graham

Oh dear its a double edged sword isn't it , social media has made the Bothy and the pools very popular , the village at legburthwaite has even closed the village hall carpark due to the infinity pool above getting g very popular. I'm sure Wainright would not approve but then again he made these hills popular too haha ....a different type of generation though I'm afraid.
