- In late September 2022, Neil pays a visit to a Lake District legend, and his favourite fell. He climbs Haystacks beside stunning Buttermere, Alfred Wainwright's favourite of the Lakeland fells, and descending Fleetwith Pike via the steep Fleetwith Edge.
Check out the full route here: explore.osmaps.com/route/2091...
While on Haystacks, he pays a visit to the last resting place of Alfred Wainwright: Innominate Tarn, and checks out the location for the latest film in the Mission: Impossible franchise (Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning - Part One) that had recently been filming near (or, more accurately, over) Buttermere.
Thanks to Mark Richards - markrichardswalking.co.uk/ - for guidance (via Twitter!) on Fleetwith Edge as a descent. If you haven't already done so, check out his excellent walking guides, which we rely on a lot, for planning and generally as very good reads!
You don't have to climb all the way to Fanny Mercer's Cross to donate to Cockermouth Mountain Rescue - you can donate to them via their website: www.cockermouthmrt.org.uk/ or cafdonate.cafonline.org/17630...

I am here laughing!! Fabulous video Neil
Thanks!
Just did Haystacks today, I went clockwise. Amazing views at the top and filled my water bottle up on the ascent. Best water I've ever had.
Thank you so much for this video.
Thanks for commenting!
Really enjoyed that, super video in great conditions. You really showed that getting up to Haystacks is far from straightforward. Loved the descent from Fleetwith Pike, one I will have to do sometime. Regards, Ashley
that was another lovely walk and I enjoyed it very much.
Dwayne
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for another lovely video
You are absolutely right to say going up is easier than coming down, especially if it’s wet because you lean into the rock when you ascend. I found that even more so on White Edge on Melbreak. I would only recommend going up Fleetwith and the advantage is going down Scarth Gap is comparatively a stroll.
Thank you! We'll have to do the clockwise route another time! All the best.
Excellent! Wonderful! So enjoyable! Thank you!
Thank you!
As ever a great video. Really looking forward to the Mission Impossible films, anticipating a lot of Lakes District action as Tom Cruise was also jumping out of a helicopter the last time i was in Buttermere in September 2021 as well.
Thank you! Yes, I can only assume they were doing reshoots, because they seemed to be doing the same stuff as in 2021.
We did this route down Fleetwith pike, I can honestly say it was scary. In certain parts I went down on my bum. When near the edge looking at cars going up honnister pass, they looked like dinky cars. I wouldn’t recommend going down it, unless your a thrill seeker.
Neil, another great video and terrific walk, glad you got the sunshine eventually. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work. Regards Kevin
Thanks, Kevin!
Fantastic! Thank you for another great video. My favourite show!
Thanks, Darren. Glad you enjoyed it!
Lovely video. Alas, my trip to the UK this summer by-passed the Lake District. However, I did take the opportunity to go to Wales and take the cog-rail train 3/4ths the way up Mt Snowden; a consulation prize.. Next time, I will hike up all the way to the summit instead. Do beware when you hike up Snowden, one false step on the north slope and you plummet to your death 1,000 - 2,000 feet down; and do take with you warm clothing, water, cellphone and snacks. And, yes, the Lake District is on my wish list for another trip to the UK.
Brilliant, very enjoyable.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Richard. Glad you enjoyed it.
Excellent footage . Thankyou
Thank you!

Thanks, Bernard.

It’s a cracking walk!
Great video … thanks! We’re thinking of doing this next week including the walk from Red Screes…
Thank you! Hope you get a good day for it.
Big Dipper 22:10 😃 Glad you had a good day, it looked promising on your drive there. A very impressive walk! 🦆 …Poor Fanny Mercer 💔
Thank you!
Really enjoy you video x
Thank you!
You’ve just retraced our route in April 2021 except the fleetwith decent we did the sheer steep drop not zig zag down, loved your video and snippets of info.
Thank you!
Great film really enjoyed watching it. Maybe no Tom Cruise but did I just imagine AW casting a shadow at 19:11.......
Thanks, John!
Really enjoyed this , am hoping to do this walk next time I visit the Lakes. How long would you say it took to do this route?
Thank you! It's probably about a 5 - 6 hour walk, depending on pace and the weather, although there are a lot of good spots for a breather! Hope you have a good day for it.
@@LakeDistrictFilms brilliant thank you
Yikes! Definitely a bit too scary for me. Excellent video but I think I'll stick to the lakeside walk. Atb.
What make is your jacket
It's a Montane - from The Climbers Shop in Ambleside: www.climbers-shop.com/
Thank you. Is it soft shell or waterproof
Sorry for the spam questions 😂
Not a problem! It’s waterproof and fairly lightweight. Wish I could find the name, but it doesn’t seem to be on the jacket and is a few years old, so might be something else now.
Thanks. And thanks again for all your videos. Always a pleasure to watch. I live in Windermere and am currently working my way through the wainwrights from the 64 walks to do them book. It’s been great to watch your films ahead of some of our ambles. Also they’re great for de stressing. All this talk of war and everything has had me escaping to the fells more and more lately, even if sometimes only virtually via your wonderful films 🙏
your choice of music does make a difference
Thank you.
