    Interesting channel. This "wrong way" approach has brought back some memories. My dad served as a Navy Chief radio operator, and technican at Guantanamo during WW2. With his encouragement, during the mid to late 60' I learned how to take his own radios apart for study. But unfortunately, being distracted by youth, I was unable to learn what I needed to put them back together again, and make them work until high school in the early 70's.

I used to take components apart, I enjoyed the old wax caps with their layers of wax paper and foil.

This channel is great, it is very real world and how somebody in the 60s would have come out and diagnosed / fixed your not so vintage tv or radio without it costing the earth. Carlsons repairs are much more like that my mechanics guy, what if money was no object and how can we make it work better than when it was new. Love to watch both styles of work as they are equally as fascinating to me. I've always thought wholesale cap replacement is a retarded approach unless you're doing a full restore or don't know what you're doing. No reason to replace working parts unless they are a well known failure like the bumblebee caps or the old japanese caps that are nearly always bad. I worked in a repair shop in the 90s and we never took the approach of changing everything on the board... That's just silly. Nobody gets a bad wheel bearing or drive shaft on a car and changes all of them on every wheel "just because."

      Back in January here in the TN/GA area, during the Georgia runoff, the political propaganda mouthpieces where in full gear as well, i mean if you heard the election adverts that were being play, most of them where just the two parties scapegoating and gaslighting one another, especially over Covid, nothing nice or encouraging is said anymore, some of the ads were also done by private businesses, rather then the politicians themselves, it got so irritating that i ether turned off the radio, or change it to an AM station away from the GA broader, such as WSM, which is only two hours down the road from me in south half of Nashville. anyways, there are two FM stations i listen to here, used to be three with this 80's/90s station, but the more i got hearing about it, it was just them favoring or repeating songs every two hours, mostly between Bette Midler's Wind beneath my wings, and Mariah Carey's Fantasy. this irritating issue goes back to what radiotvphononut mention about radio stations nowadays, being so automated, that there not a whole lot of diversity in the selection anymore.

    • @robertgaines-tulsa

      @@Pawelr98 The only thing I can think of is to gut a wax capacitor and insert a new cap inside the old one, but that just seem like time wasting denial. If the overall look of the inside of a radio that was never meant to be viewed is that important to you, I suppose. One of the benefits of just using the new, smaller caps is that they provide better air flow for what was essentially an over packed rat's nest of components.

    • @Pawelr98
      @Pawelr98 Před 2 lety

      @@robertgaines-tulsa no, they just "open" the ends of the wax capacitor and boil them in wax, which removes most of the stuff that caused them to leak DC current. There are even guides out there, some 90+ years old capacitors could get restored to a point where leakage was (almost) nonexistent.

    Shango, you are the reason I got into the hobby. I've got a Firestone 7427 and an old GE All American 5 here in my office. I started by buying some cheap chinese test equipment, then found and repaired a Heathkit Tube tester, a Heathkit signal tracer, an Eico Cap tester and an Eico signal generator, and an old B&K scope for my bench. I figure if I want it, I need to know what it does and how it works. Only then did I start on radios. I've learned alot watching your channel over the years. BTW, if I can ever figure out how to get in touch, I have hundreds of Compactrons to send you, as I never plan on repairing TVs.

    I too have stuck my metal screwdriver into a powered-on radio. There are a number of arc spots on it where I grounded high voltage! I have learned a way to avoid shocking myself. You need to put some heat shrink tubing on the metal shaft right up to the end to avoid destroying all your good work! However, this is a really good video of the techniques you apply to get a radio going again. Nice job!

    Good Sunday Morning Shango! Love your videos Sir! KECA radio was what became KABC 790. KECA was owned by Earle C. Anthony thus the calls KECA. They also were the original calls for KABC ABC 7 in Los Angles.
    He also started KFI radio 640 and KFI TV ch 9 which was Los Angles’s original NBC affiliate. NBC pulled the affiliation from ch 9 and he I think took the station off the air due to NBC putting ch 4 on. The frequency remained vacant until KHJ TV came on under RKO General along with the AM 930 and later KHJ-FM 101.1 now KRTH.
    Channel 9 is of course now CBS owned KCAL-Television.
    By the way I got very sick in February of 2020 as well and probably had this COVID thing and I will not get the Jab!
    A friend of mine my age got the shot and passed away a week after getting it. Im never getting over that.
    Keep up the great work! Very much appreciated!

He caught MRSA Pneumonia from the ventilator and went back in a week later for 7 days and had to be given pure oxygen with a face mask. The doc said he was over the Covid for the second round and the pneumonia was worse.
