An amazing video. i have lived in rural Bulgaria for the last 6 years and get all my honey from my neighbour who is 89 this year. He is leaving to go and live with his son and wants me to take over his bees. I am learning from him, however we don't speak the same language, so these videos help put into context what I know he has been trying to tell/show me. I used to be so afraid of bees but working with him and getting to know his hives has changed my view and has given me a passion I never knew I had. Thanks for these videos - I have subscribed and will be watching more and learning everything I can from both you and my neighbour. :)
Good for you Jane. Sounds like a very cool thing. Glad I can help.
Wow! What a tremendous opportunity for you Jane! I'm jealous!
What a neat story!
Thanks David. I just hired a company to remove a big and old hive with massive amount of honey from behind a small wall. I was pleased to have the bees to pollinate my rich garden all these years without doing anything. I am sad to see the bees and their queen gone. So I thought may be I would initiate a hive on another side of the yard. Watching your video really helped me understand this is not for every one. The bees were a gift from above and the honey they left me the big icing. I will leave the important bee keeping work to those who can responsibly manage the important task.
holy moley!! it's a bee skyscraper!!!! packed with honey too!!!!
Day job: recently retired via VA Disability. Plans: close on 5 acres soon and commence in 2021.
Did your plan come to fruition Steve?
When taking off a heavy super, have an empty deep super off to the side. Remove some of the filled frames and temporarily place them in that spare super. Then you can remove and carry the hive super without such strain on your back. Put the super on you stack and replace the removed frames. Replace the supers on the hive using the same process in reverse.
I only use mediums for honey supers and never risk straining my back.
I was having a panic attack and I watched your video and felt better. Thank you. Part of the panic attack was that our bees just came and it is snowing in Michigan. God help us.
Great sir, I have a long experience in bees, but I was impressed by your experience, your arrangement, your dealings with bees, and your calm way of working.
Loved the"SUPER FAST FRAME FLIP!" đ đ đ
Thanks đ
Holy Propolis, Batman! That was incredible!!
I am an avid gardener interested in beekeeping. This one of the most fascinating videos Iâve ever seen. Iâm taking a certificate class next months, January 2022.
that was very interesting content! I learned so much just watching you. I'm not ever going to be a bee keeper, but this is still very much of an interest. I'm retired/disabled. So living vicariously through so many of you all with active lives and varied interests. I adore honey, and miss the days when I could afford to go buy local honey at the healthfood store. Now I no longer get out and about, but am homebound/bed bound for the most part. so enjoy life and a sip of honey for me!
Not to "bee" a brown nose'er but I watch tons of bee keepers an their videos but I have to say I find yours most interesting and down to earth..an that is sincerely a good thing!! Thank you for all the hours you spend to educate us!!
David your videos are a great refresher. Thanks for taking the time to make them.
We live in Boulder City Nevada and always purchase raw honey from a local beekeeper. My husband recently purchased a honeycomb for me and I didn't think I was going to like it. Of course, I did. As much as we purchase local honey I never researched the honey bee making process and decided one lonely night during COVID-19 and googled 'how do bees make the comb'. I came across your video and it was like you were talking directly to me. "If you've never seen this before and just happened across my video", 'I actually have a mentorship program'. It was so fascinating and interesting. What amazing bees! I think I'm just going to take one of your beginner online course and not tell my husband. What could go wrong, right?!
Good for you! It is sooooooo fun to learn new things and travel down a new path of interest. Go for it
You make such great videos Dave! I am working my way through them all. This is my first week of beekeeping and I'm learning a lot from you. Your videos are so informative and you have a steady, relaxed way of working and an enjoyable banter. You are the Mr. Rogers of the beekeeping world! đ
Wow, now that is a great compliment. Mr. Rogers was the best!
Your my new favorite chanel âïž
I just laughed and loved your slow motion of that frame up against the wall. So unexpected. Thank you for that.
Glad you enjoyed it
Pretty slick on that frame flip Dave đź
Fantastic frame flipđ
Love the videos Dave! I thought you might get a kick out of this, at 44:54 there is a praying mantis hanging out on top of your head!
Those things will eat humming birds!
Whenever you see a dude without a suit slapping a beehive like nothing you know he's a pro beekeeper
I loved the lines of yours ..." I love the genetics."
Beautiful honey! I am pretty sure I just seen a huge spider on the top of your hat lol. 45mins in. I even rewind to confirm haha.
Using Star Pellets for the smoker works really well and is less smelly than burning clothes.
That weight is why I am going with top bar hives. But I am only a backyard beekeeper so really not worried about getting out tons of honey.
huge colony!
Love the frame flip!
I am so grateful I found your channel⥠thank you!

Hello from Michigan
I used to own a large candle company. I got a lot of my beeswax from a guy named Norman Farmer. Everybody seems to know him. Really neat guy. He offered to teach me bee keeping but he passed away shortly after.
Wow I'm surprised this awesome video doesn't have any comments! I've just discovered your channel and I think you sir are one of my favorite CZcamsrs so far. I'm definitely going to start beekeeping but I want to find a wild honey bee colony so I am going hunting!
Just started watching bee videos and ngl that slomo frame flip made my dayđ
I love it I am thinking of being a beekeeper
'Lets go to plan Bee' ! Hahahaha

Awesome Dianne! Thank you
I love these videos, keep it up!
I just ordered my first hive on 1/1/2021! I have been learning, researching and saving for two years!
Good To Hear!
Nice job! đ
Thanks! đ
I'm learning more and more
lol! Love the bloopers. đ€Ł
Beauty of a hive there Dave. You need a back brace!
So far I have a strong back.
Great video dave
Thanks!
Confirming my decision to stick with 8 frame hivesâŠ..newbie hereâŠpretty sure I wouldnât be able to lift thoseâŠholy cow!
They are heavy!
Oh my gosh
I would have to put the 8 frames on top!
Someone get this nice old man a cherry picker. Hes eventually going to need a small crane for moving his boxes at the rate his hive is expanding lol.
Plan Bee đđ
What is your ratio of how much honey you take vs what you leave for the bees to continue on? Robber bees get in that fast of you working on the hives?
I see I am not the only one sporting a smoker with duct tape : )
I finally broke down this year and brought a new one on board.
I just love a good honey harvest, but I believe my bees wish I would buy them a Kirby to clean up with. Great video I just love it.
Thanks for watching!
How long did it take the bees to fill up the hive with honey? Incredible video and thank you for it
A couple months
What does the red cloth do plse?
Sorry...just learning.

I hear the term "swarm" a lot. What exactly does it mean for bees to swarm?
Big up David , its really a good innovation and rewarding. I have always wanted to ask that apart from bee honey and wax , is there any other bee products benefitial to man kind. If so what are they and their purpose. Thank you
What do you think of horizontal hives? One thing for sure it would not hurt your back like these do.
I would like to know what tipe of bee is this colony, so so very docile. Really enjoyed watching.
Really incredible to watch and I was wondering when you spoke of the bee's being able to possibly speak of what could be coming with concerns of our enviornment, I don't how to spell that word, but anyways, now that we're into 2021 and covid changed everything, have you seen changes in your bee's work and activity?
Why put a red towel over the hive and what did you spray it with
Really should have made 2 videos on this one. Make them bite size.
Curious did all the hive bodies have drawn comb?
This is my first year beekeeping and I am enjoying your videos. I was wondering how you are stacking a 10 frame deep over and 8 frame? Doesn't it overlap and the bottom sides exposed?
Yes, I simply cut a filler piece. Was very simple.
Kelly, he probably added a 10 Frame Board over that 8 Frame Box. Simples. đ
Where did you get the bee pullover you're wearing in the video thanks
Will you make a video on not using a queen excluder
Good ideal.
I live in NC.
Perhaps I missed it, but did I see you restock the whole hive as it was in the beginning? If so, I'm not understanding why you'd keep I that way. Brood in the bottom 2 boxes after they swarmed, why not leave one 8 frame super above them with 2 or 4 frames of drawn comb for growth and harvest the rest, and then in time grow supers again?
Gosh, that was a long time ago, can't remember
When you lay the rag on there could you lean the super towards the wind at the end of it once you think most of them were gone so that the wind would blow through the rag and through the super to encourage any left to leave?
Sir d why didnt the hive beetle at the at the super they stayed mostly on the brood chamber?
Question, is it better one large colony or two smaller ones?
How often do you have to keep smoking the hive/bees as you are doing all this to keep yourself safe?
It is a developed skill and art to be able to read bees to detect they need smoked again. Usually I notice their behavior and it varies based on each colony's disposition. Sometimes every 5 minutes, some only once.
Curious, with this hive what did you start with for boxes? 2 Deeps?
He said, it was two Mediums, it had Swarmed prior to Videos.
Usually Brood is x1 Deep Box. đ
Some suggest to remove all burr comb what's your take, I do not see you removing any ?
Iâve been taught that putting the frames back in the same order that they were originally in is important. Is that true really or not so much?
I just noticed when you were taking the honey frames that you didnât put the ones you moved back to their original position before adding the 3 new frames so Iâm now curious đ
Sometimes it does matter but often it is fine to change or move frames
What dud you spray on that cloth 46:00 ?
How is this hive so big, There are supposed to be new Queens born that part of the bees swarm & leave with Her. Did something happen to the Drones? I never heard of such a thing & my father was the Bee man of Wichita. I watched everything he did growing up.
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Name Fahd Mishni Al-Thaqafi Greetings
Master how about you have a hive bees are not getting in the hive what will I do?
Nice video to watch. Can you please explain the words "queen excluder= honey excluder". Can you point me something to read/watch/pay to learn/ about this?
Why is it ok to use fule in the smoker that contains dyes? Such as blue jeans scrapes..
I may be wrong but 2 things. Bees only live 40 days. Secondly my jeans are so washed and warn out I canât imagine any dyes much are left.
When is the best time to start a new hive ?
Burning the blue jeans is not only toxic to humans but also the bees
New pair maybe, but the way I wear my down to a few frazzled threads, I doubt it.
Anyone else notice the baby praying mantis on his head at 44:54?
What's the easiest way to tell if the hive is queenless and you have workers laying egs that are capped over? You will only see drone cells?
Correct! However, as soon as laying workers start laying eggs in absence of a queen you will see LOTS of eggs in one cell.
Can you put bee hive on concrete pad
Drones don't have stingers, correct?
Why are some frames dark? It video makes it look as if it has mildew... mold?
Can someone put honey on the frames to attract bees to come in to your hive
