  • After leaving Mayberry, and after his next show THE HEADMASTER was quickly canceled, Andy tried again with The NEW Andy Griffith Show on Friday nights on CBS. It was not a success.

    The beginning music is the music that was used in the AGS episode "Haunted House" which I JUST finished watching on PLUTO TV. 😂

    Despite airing only 10 episodes it had quickly jumped the shark in the first episode when Andy Griffith's new character, Andy Sawyer, new mayor of the town of Greenwood, North Carolina, was welcomed by Mayberry townsfolk Barney Fife (Don Knotts), Goober Pyle (George Lindsey) and Emmett Clark (Paul Hartman)!

      Me either. I'm reading the book Andy & Don about the friendship between the two(great read btw), but I've never even heard of this show. Didn't last long though.

      What book is it? I read one a long time ago about all the "behind-the-scenes" stuff in the Andy Griffith Show, Don and Andy's relationship, etc.

      Albin Kampfer Not really. considering this show was situated in the suburbs. it was cancelled due to poor ratings. between the original Andy Griffith show and Matlock he'd experienced many a failed sitcom and this was one of them.

    • @fullervisiondotnet
      @fullervisiondotnet Před 7 lety

      It was a rush job and a flawed idea, and there probably wasn't much of a chance of it getting past the end of the season anyway, but the rural purge certainly didn't help.

    Plus, the pilot episode that I have in my collection has Don Knotts, George Lindsey, and Paul Hartman appearing in their old roles as Barney, Goober, and Emmett, respectively. Moral: you can take Andy out of Mayberry, but you can't necessarily take Mayberry out of Andy... "Matlock" notwithstanding.

    CBS fired Michael Dann for Mr. Game Show hater Fred Silverman, because look what he did, got rid of (The Joker's Wild) and (Now You See It) on CBS in 1975, got rid of (Break The Bank) on ABC to make the Daytime Soap Operas longer in 1976, but this is the worst, June 20,1980, gets rid of (The Hollywood Squares), (High Rollers '78), and (Chain Reaction) on NBC.

    The city is called Greenwood, and Andy is the mayor with a wife and two kids rather than the widowed sheriff, but for all intents and purposes, this is basically the "old" Andy Griffith Show. Even Earle Hagen's theme was a cue from the old series. But as we all know, this isn't THE Andy Griffith Show we all know and love, and with stiff competition from "The Brady Bunch" and "High Chapparal", it was 0 for 2 for poor "Ange" in 1970.

  • @millenniumman75

    This was a midseason replacement for Headmaster,
    The Headmaster's 14 shows ran from September 1970 to January 1, 1971.
    The New Andy Griffith Show ran from January 8, 1971 to March 12, 1971 with reruns until May 21, 1971. The ratings were so bad, they rebroadcast The Headmaster during the summer - June to September 1971.
    This show was on DURING the final season of Mayberry RFD, the show that replaced the original Andy Griffith Show! CBS' "Rural Purge" of 1971 happened and all "country" shows, except for Gunsmoke, were cancelled.

      millenniumman75 and some non-rural shows too: HOGANS HEROES, THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW, THE JACKIE GLEASON SHOW and THE RED SKELTON SHOW also got the ax

    • @millenniumman75
      @millenniumman75 Před 9 lety

      star trek True, but CBS deliberately wanted to get away from doing "rural-themed" shows, especially after All in the Family premiered in January 1971. Mayberry RFD was actually doing well enough in the ratings to be renewed for a fourth year, but CBS ended it anyway.

    • @starey1

    Seem like some kind of contract obligation. Them studios were ruthless back in the day

  • @STho205
    @STho205 Před 5 lety

    Yes I remember this. First episode was obviously him as mayor of Mayberry with a different town name. Different wife and different name. However lots of cameos by the ole gang still on contract with CBS. "Angel in My Pocket" would have made a better new Andy Griffith series, but in reality the era had long passed. NC is old fashioned but not that old fashioned.
