- I've shell-fully compiled some winter beach-combing trips from the past couple of years in Maine, that I haven't had the opportunity to upload previously.
These compiled clips were filmed at some of my favorite places in Maine(Saco Bay, Casco Bay, and Downeast to name a few) during 2021, 2022, and 2023.
Funny, you picked up things I would have left behind and left things that I would take! To each his own. Thanks for sharing

Those Moons you find in Maine are my favorites! So gorgeous!
I tried to find shells in Maine and found the little yellow ones and the purple oysters, thanks for showing those in your videos. I also took your tip about finding shells in lobster traps and now have a dozen beauteous neptunes and common welks which I can never find on the beach, not even in down east ME. The traps were along the roads stored for the winter, and no one seemed to mind my exploring them, I took some great photos too. Thanks again for your magnificent videos and tips!

It's been a while but finally have time to sit down and enjoy some of your videos again. I can't believe how many beautiful, and different to me, shells you have in Maine (and those sand dollars)! Hopefully I'll get a chance to go shelling in Maine and other New England states since we would love to get up that way one of these days, never been. Now to see what else I've missed. Thank you, again, for taking the time to do your videos, they are the best out there and I love seeing the shells but I also love the scenery.

I find it interesting how big the moon shells are up there. And so many... Also the false angel wings are bigger than here as well (FL). You'd think they'd grow bigger in a warmer climate. Thanks, Brian!🙂
Northern Moon Snails can get HUGE! It's also really cool that they are relatively common on Maine beaches.

Omg I would be in shell heaven on that beach......super jelly......I did get some killer huge sized blue muscles on the oregon coast myself not too long ago.....but it wasn't nothing like that.....

Hi Brian! So enjoyed this video. Your videos are so so relaxing and calming. Beachy goodness for the soul. I love the northern moons but those sand dollars are my weakness. We only have the 5 hole keyhole here in SC which I love but those are like the ones I purchase from Jamie with Plum Island. They are beautiful and I treasure them. Saco must be close to Plum Island. The Common Sand dollars, and found fairly readily throughout northern New England - sometimes they wash up in large amounts. Saco Bay is about 1 hour or so north of Plum Island, Mass :)

Very cool finds, the northern sand dollars are so cool looking! When I visited the Outer Banks I noticed one of the vehicular ramps was made entirely out of shells, and the shoulders of the road were covered with giant intact northern moon snails and deep sea scallops. I imagine those were dredged locally somewhere offshore, which is pretty crazy considering that area is extremely far south in the range for those species. I need to get over to the northeast to find those shells the real way!
Hi shell friend! This is such amazing anecdotal information! As you highlighted, Northern Moon's and Deep Sea Scallops are super rare finds in NC, so totally agree those must have been dredged locally in offshore in colder water away from the Gulf Stream. This area is so intriguing because of the overlap of cold water and warm water currents!

OMG!!!...one moon snail after another! One shell two shell, big shell little shell...so many wonderful finds...little wonder the native americans used seashells to make jewelry for trading and money! I never tire of these shelling adventures...from the warmth and comfort of my office...thanx for braving the extreme cold and thanx, once again, for allowing me to tag along on another perilous adventure ...!!!....in 4K...!!!

I watch another shelling channel located in Florida, she uses acid and bleach to wash up the shells to get the colors to come out. I don't know if you do that to, just a thought shared. Have a great day and thanks for making your video. Love this content.

Hi shell friend! I have found that Northern Moon Snails have all sorts of different colors on the outside of the shell, and in the aperture. Shell color is dependent upon the diet of the mollusc while alive, and the resting conditions in which the shell sits after dying. It's always a sweet surprise when finding them washed up!

Hi! Yuki is doing very well, but she was diagnosed with an auto immune disorder last year, and she occasionally has flare ups that need to be managed. Additionally, many of the places I have been traveling to shell at either don't allow dogs, or will frequently have dogs off leash. I always have Yuki on a lead, but she can a bit reactive with other dogs, so I have to be careful where I bring her. I will definitely have her out on more adventures soon though - stay tuned! Woof!

The moon snail shells you find in Maine are so big and beautiful! Are they a different species than the ones found in Florida?

You said the cone top was a wedding shell. In another video you explained that these are shells used in weddings. I was curious - how are they used and how do they end up on the beach? Do you sell shells you collect? I would love a big moon snail shell. They are awesome.
Great question re: wedding shells! I can never be entirely sure how these shells arrive on the beach, but in general if a shell that is not native to the area washes up it's highly likely it was used somewhat locally in a wedding or beach ceremony and then gets moved around by the tides/currents until it washes up. This cone top was a bit anomalous - I think it's a cone from the Indo-Pacific region, so this is even greater potential evidence that it came from such an event, but again not totally certain! I don't usually find "wedding shells" in Maine, lol.

Do you ever go to Reid state park in the winter for shelling ?
I’m heading to Portland and up to Bar Harbor in August. I’m an avid Sheller in Florida but would love to find some shells in Maine. Any advice?
Hi! Pretty much any beach in Maine will provide potential shell collecting opportunities, but obviously going at low tide and finding places with less people will always be the best way to go if possible. If in Portland, the Casco Bay islands offer great spots to find shells and sea glass while enjoying beautiful views. There are literally THOUSANDS of species of sand dollars. Many are hard to distinguish from each other so they get grouped into general categories locally based on appearance. The prevalent ones in Maine are just generically called “common sand dollars”. The ones with open slots (lanules) include keyhole and arrowhead by locals. I, too, was surprised he left those beauties on the beach and instead collected some beat up whelks. To each his own
This is a Common Sand dollar, which is found "commonly" in Northern New England. Key hole sand dollars are found south of New England in warmer waters.
