  • Puzzle 31 is one of the hardest puzzles on the mensa norway IQ test and for a long time I thought it was even impossible. I decided to make a video about the story from when I first encountered it to when it got removed from the IQ test.
    Malkinky's video: • Puzzle 31 from Mensa I...
    Mensa Norway IQ Test: test.mensa.no/
IQ test playlist: • The Impossible Puzzle ...
In this video I go through each of the puzzles and try to explain what the correct answer is and why.
Please let me know in the comments if you find interesting IQ Tests that you want me to check out!

It was correct! Mensa typed it wrongly, it should be: Stripes + Stripes = White. White + Black = White. Black + Stripes = White. Black + White = Stripes. Stripes + Black = White. Black + White = Stripes. The middle is White ( Stripe + Stripes = White), and the left and right will be the same, so the answer is D.
The only confusing thing is how can A+B ≠ B+A. Most people won't think that way when they do the test.

Great video. Had the puzzle not had the error it would actually be pretty easy. It's not clear what the heck these puzzles are measuring. I get better at them the more I do, but my IQ isn't likely getting higher.

    Exhaustive and entertaining, as always!
Don't know how to thank you enough! You gave my video a significant boost in the last 24 hours, that means a lot about your audience!
I'm still saddy about that pattern of mine, i was pretty attached to it just because i "figured it out" at first try, and B gave me a full score too! It looked so natural in my head, like if all 24 squares were tricking me outta finding that.
It would have been fun to hear honorable mentions like "victory royale on norway's national independence day coincidence" hahaha but i guess we'll keep in our happy memories.
    Keep it up! You're great!

Yeah, Im like 95% sure that B gave me a full score as well?? Which made me even more confused about the puzzle, I went through the test multiple times both of picking B and not picking B but everytime i picked B I got a higher score.
I was thinking about mentioning that "victory royale on norway's national independence day coincidence" and a bunch of other things like my reddit post etc but I didnt want to make the video too long + I wanted to keep the main focus on just the puzzle solving and not so much all the history :P
Glad you enjoyed it tho :)

Holy shit, what a saga! Indeed, if you do vertical addition only, and neglect to think that it should work the same horizontally as well, you'll get the indended correct solution. But if you try the same addition horizontally, it'll produce a different result, throwing off your train of thought, leading you to start overthinking this thing and wasting time on it. So it's a matter of luck if you solve it quickly, that luck would be choosing to do the vertical addition first.

Idk if this is just a coincidence, but you can just take the middle from the top ones and put it as the sides on the lower ones. Then you keep white in the middle for all of them. So for example looking at the first vertical row top picture , there is white in the middle, therefore there are two white edges on the lowest one in that same row.

This is a Wechsler scale if you pay attention ro percentiles... That means that your IQ is over 172+ on Cattel scale, aka. the scale that assumed that Einstein's IQ was 160. Don't stress about it, the test is according to many people unable to even calculate the whole logic inteligence, because of the complexity of human brain. Scoring significant result means that you are good at matrices and is sometimes correlated to math in some aspects of it. Also your sleep, nutrition, stress and environmental conditions also affect your performance. At the test I was able to attain 144 on Cattel scale despite the lack of sleep and really hot 35C inside the classroom, where the test was taken. After that I assumed that in perfect conditions I would attain 150 without problems, but at the mensa online practice tests of Norway and Finland I managed to get 138 (162 Cattel). IQ tests can also be practiced and if practiced, they often show higher results by 20 points.

@@quarepercutisproximum9582 I never actually got around to book the test cause I realised that I didn't care and probably wouldn't want to know. The truth is IQ is somewhat important, but knowing your IQ could lead to limitations and life changing decisions. I don't want my IQ to choose my future, I just want to work with the thing I'm most interested in. Plus I have a lot of self confidence when it comes to my grades and "smartness". I suggest that you also avoid the test entirely, even the online, cause it might lead to confidence issues in the future and you might end up blaming everything on your IQ.

    my solution:
black + black = white and grey + grey and white + white = white
    grey + white = grey
grey + black = grey ( we dont need this)
so just from left to right or from top to bottom:
    white + grey = grey
    white + white is white

  • @e1lg537

I remember solving it tho... For me I looked at it this way. The first row has 3 of all 3 types W S and B, the second row has 5 of S and 2 each of B and W, the third row already has 4 W so that means that the final answer should have 5 W in total 2 S and 2 B but the answers didn't have any option that would allow this to happen since this would require 2 B and 1 W types. So from the options that contain 1 W squares I chose the one which would follow at least some pattern which would be (b) as this would mean that the no. of B types decreases by one in each row maintaining the count of W types.

Using logic you can tell it has symmetrical which means it's either D,A or F. It cannot be A because if it is A then there would be no pattern. So it's either D or F.

  • @CHRISREDFIELD1234598
    @CHRISREDFIELD1234598 Před 5 měsíci

To be honest, it was easily solvable even with 2 Blacks having dual outcomes.
The trick was to only look at combinations of Stripes and Whites and ignore Black squares. This makes sense as most of the time the test designers can throw in random items in questions Only to distract you from finding the real pattern.
So if you had only looked at Whites & Stripes, it would have been evident that correct answer can only be D.

    • @PuzzlesAndSolutions
      @PuzzlesAndSolutions  Před 3 lety +2

I went through this sequence in the Mensa New Zealand video. I found two ways to think about this sequence:
-If you are familiar with trigonometry; The n-th number in this sequence equals sin(n*90 degrees).
      f(1)=sin(90 degrees)=1
      f(2)=sin(180 degrees)=0
      f(3)=sin(270 degrees)=-1
      f(4)=sin(360 degrees)=0
      f(5)=sin(450 degrees)=1
-If we look at the change between the 3 first numbers we see that it's "minus 1" two times in a row so we can make the assumption that any change repeat 2 times. Going from the third to the forth numbers we have "plus 1" and if we repeat "plus 1" another time, we get that the answer=0+1=1.

@@hjkhjl67t I normally don't care much about the easier puzzles either and I have thought about making videos with only hard puzzles from tests.
The only problem with making videos about "hard puzzles" is knowing if a puzzle is objectively hard or not. For example there might be some puzzle on an IQ test that a lot of people could use help with BUT I personally found that specific puzzle easy and therefore I never made a video about it.
or the opposite scenario where I found a puzzle really hard but the majority of people find it easy and I waste my time explaining something that is obvious to most...

People answer the questions, then their capabilities are measured against the answers they gave, if giving a particular answer can be proven beyond reasonable doubt to be a predictor for someone's learning ability, then it is included in a question. The correct answer is simply what the most capable people give. I.e., The logic came after the question, it's just the result of trial and error, empirical evidence, it's important not to conflate causation and effect.

I got the autism + adhd pattern recognition thing going on and wasn't able to get this during the test (still mensa level tho), but pausing the video and looking at it again, I figured it out in 5 minutes. My method is probably bs and I probably just got lucky looking it over this second time. But the middle cube in the top row shows up as the left and right cubes of the second row if you shift it to the right and take the former right section and put it on the left. Then the middle cubes in the top row also make up the outside cubes in the bottom row, but without having to shift it to the right as done in the second row. So since D was the only one that had a diagonal striped cube on the right and left side, since the top right section has a diagonal striped cube in the middle, I guessed that one.

IMHO this puzzle holds the water pretty well, how about that ?:
    1. screen out (hide) blacks
    2. now you can see only 2 simple rules: a) stripes * stripes = white b) white * stripes = stripes
so, you've got just one possible answer: "D".
my only doubt is that it seems to be too simple taking into account relatively high number of this puzzle and scale of discussion around it.
