The Bizarre History of Professional Rat-Catchers

  • What do Queen Victoria, the Pied Piper, and a children’s book have in common? Rats, of course - more specifically, the art of catching them. The history of rat-catching is a lot more fascinating than you might expect, but it's probably just as gross. From sewers to disease to lucrative rat-fighting businesses, rat-catching is definitely the kind of dirty and disgusting job that deserves more recognition.

Rats make some of the best pets. The ones I had were female fancy rats and there was never a hint of aggressive behavior towards the family. They'd attack strangers who tried to put their fingers into the cage. Very intelligent, loyal and sociable. Rats are some of the best pets anyone could ever have! They're clean, quiet, very obedient if you take the time to train them.
In fact, they're so clean and smart, some cat rescues have been known to keep them in cages with kittens. Kittens are extremely messy, so the rats will make sure they stay clean. It's also very cute watching them play and cuddle together!

My brother and I were in shock I guess. There was blood, and pieces of rat all over the place. My furious mother told him to go buy a new dryer that instant, clean the mess up himself and take my brother and I when you go to SEARS. I got the Ghostbusters Firehouse that day.

Even things like washing hands is a relatively recent concept.

When I worked at a restaurant, one of my jobs was to catch rats. We were located between two other restaurants. So, when our population of rats would decline, rats from the neighboring places would move in. I must have caught and killed between 300 and 500 of the little monsters over a two year span.

There was a Hollywood movie made of the story of The Pied Piper of Hamelin, released in 1957 and starring Van Johnson, filmed in glorious Technicolor, so you don’t have to miss seeing a single rat. It was screened for us when I was in grade school. Ever hear an entire auditorium full of kids saying “Ewwww!” all at the same time? That was an experience.

We (South Africa) had a rat problem with Norwegian Rats about 8 years ago. Being an insomniac I was the first in my home of 5 people to want to go mad hearing them scuttling in the roof at night. I called in a Pest Control company who fumigated the roof area but it continued. I sent my eldest son, who was now also hearing them in the roof, up to place rat poison in loads of places. We had a very big home. Still it didn't stop. I eventually spoke to a large house maintenance and supply company's staff member who said they had been informed of a manifestation of the Norwegian Rats and they required a different type of poison to normal rat poison, which they appeared to relish. Once again I sent my son into the roof but this time without water. Usual rats eat the poison, get thirst, drink the water and they die from burned stomachs. It was a couple of days later when I was sitting on my patio when I spotted a massive 30cm rat coming out from under the roof trusses, clearly needing to drink water and my swimming pool was close by. I am no flipping hard hearted woman, but I grabbed one of my other son's cricket bats and bludgeoned it and another which followed soon after, to death. Not even my 23 year old, at the time, son would go near it. It was huge. I felt like I had killed an animal, not a rodent. To get rid of them I placed them in a burner. Now, if only the bats responsible for the spread of covid had been dealt with in the same manner who knows, we could have avoided this epidemic or.... maybe not..

Rats make some of the best pets. The ones I had were female fancy rats and there was never a hint of aggressive behavior towards the family. They'd attack strangers who tried to put their fingers into the cage. Very intelligent, loyal and sociable. I'd have a rat now for sure the only problem is the fact that they have such a short lifespan that broke my heart to see them pass away after 3-4 years.

According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way that a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyways. Because bees don't care what humans think is impossible.

In 2010 my family and I sat in the corner of the parking lot at Nissan Stadium in Nashville and watched obviously well fed Norway Rats raid a dumpster. They were huge and fearless. I walked to the Exxon station that the dumpster serve, and they acted as though I wasn't there. When I was a kid and my aunt lived in an old brownstone duplex, she use to hammer the tops of cans over their holes yet they would chew through them. In fact if rats can't gnaw on something their bottom teeth can curl into their heads.

@@OFilipito_Enjoy_The_Videos When I was a kid I had (at one time or another) hamsters and even a gerbil. One of the hamsters I had was so smart he could open the cage door on his own; and this was one of those cages that had a sliding latch door on the top of the cage. This ability of his forced me to have to put a padlock on the cage door, (especially because we also had a cat.) I never had a rat because my mom drew the line at rats (for whatever reason), but I have known people who had a rat or two, and I got along fine with them (the rats... and the people who cared for them).
