  • There is a misconception that lean can’t be applied in an office environment. I’m about to challenge this thinking, the fact is that lean can be applied anywhere! Hope you enjoy my latest video!

If only other places were like that. One of my most recent jobs, every time I came up with an idea to streamline things, I was castigated for catering to lazy people. My director didn't want any lazy people on his team, so his approach was to make everything as difficult as possible.

Lean is hard work that makes work easy, if he has people using there head to make work easy, then they can do more work in the day for same effort that's more $$$ for the company.. it really is working smarter not harder.

Some good points, but some of that is just solving problems that didn't exist, and as an engineer who solves real problems every single day, I have no time for people who waste company time creating fictional problems to solve and look "pro-active".
There's a process to every decision I make and a part of that process is deciding whether change is going to cost more than the benefits, and it's not just cost, because every change has to go through a customer approval process.
Do we need to replace a production jig at £10'000 when we're literally producing the final 1000 parts of that product series in the next 3 weeks? or do we do a temporary repair, keep production running and insert a manual inspection station for 3 weeks? The cost a alone of taking down production for 1 hour is astronomical, it's 200 people at shift allowance wages, £14.80, say £15 x 200, £3000 an hour, 2x 8 hour shifts, £48000 a day for however long it takes to get the new jig supplied and it's usually a 2 week lead time, plus fines from our customers when their production lines have no parts.
BTW, filling up draw space with foam separators? utterly STUPID. I mean the time and money wasted created those??? JUST to waste storage space???? It absolutely defies all common sense and logic. I'm not trying to be mean, but if I caught someone cutting pen shaped holes in old packing foam, they'd be gone, you're not in the vegan isle of waitrose now Dorothy.
These people need to spend a few years working at shop floor level, doing real work, to gain a perspective on reality.
I worked 6 years in an office doing mostly data input with MSAcess, I could do the same job as 3 people in one day, because I knew all the shortcuts and I knew when pasting to the back end was going to yield greater efficiency, I was so much more productive that I was investigated on suspicion of outsourcing my job.
I once put 1.5 million entries (same line of text) into a database in just 15 minutes using VBS scripting, a job that would have taken 1 person 2 years to do manually. In fact I upset a lot of people that day, because I did something they didn't understand and it wiped the floor with every "solution" they'd ever dreamed up. People don't real efficiency measures, they like pseudo efficiency measures that look great on paper.
Anyway, as I said, some good points, "idiot labels" are always good for example, but some people aren't really geared towards things that don't simply involve following instructions. I bet the people working shop floor, doing the "bread and butter" work, don't get nice desks, air conditioning and creature comforts and most likely have to deal with inefficient rules and policies dreamed up by office staff, as is always the way.
