In this week’s episode, we discuss how to add an ethereal glow for calming landscape photos. Perhaps one of the most popular trends in landscape photography over the years is to add an ethereal and painterly look to your photos using techniques such as the Orton Effect. There's multiple different reasons why photographers do this, but for me the reason is simply to reduce the cold and lifeless feeling that an overly sharp digital photo can have and replace it with a more soft and ethereal look..sort of like film. And not only are there multiple reasons to do this there's also multiple different ways to apply this look as well.
In this video, I review the various different ways I add an ethereal glow to my landscape photos. Now if you want to add the actual Orton Effect to your images then you'll have to use Photoshop for that, which I show in this video as well, but there are still plenty of creative ways to add a similar ethereal effect only using Lightroom. There aren't many photo editing techniques that I use on each and every one of my landscape photos, but applying a softening and painterly glow to my images is one of the most often used techniques for me.
So I hope the next time you sit down to edit one of your photos that you'll feel comfortable testing out some of the editing techniques in this video to create a more ethereal and calming landscape image.
If you enjoyed this video, please consider giving it a thumbs up and let me know what you think in the comments below - I guarantee I'll get back to ya.
Thanks for watching everyone!

Mark: You have an uncanny ability to keep creating videos with very relevant content. This was another great one. I look forward to your updates every week. Thank you!
awillem3 Thanks so much - I appreciate that!
The essence of good communication is... simplicity. I've seen videos take up to 45 mins to explain this technique. Outstanding , Mark.
Hi Mark, your channel has quickly become one of my favourite photography youtube channels. Thanks for all the great content, very much appreciated.
Thanks so much - that means a lot!
Your almost to 100k Mark you can do it. I've learned a lot from you. God bless.
Thanks Nicholas!! Really appreciate it!
Mark, I have been watching your videos for the past few months and I have to tell you that I have learned more from you about refining my Photoshop and Lightroom processing than any one else on the internet. Thank you for your easy to understand videos! Keep the great work!
Most thorough explanation of this technique I've seen yet, and the first one I've seen for applying it in Lightroom, which I appreciate because I that means I can finally apply it to photos I edit on my mobile devices. Thank you!
Mark, This was so helpful. I always wondered how others achieved that "painterly" look. You explanation was so straightforward, clear, and easy to understand. Thank you so much!
Real helpful info again mark. Thanks. Great video
Stewie Whittaker Really glad to hear it was helpful!
Thanks for this weeks video Mark. I enjoy the way you explain all the different ways of doing post processing.
Much appreciated Alan - thank you!
I love this effect a lot, but like always not too much 😅
I hate those photos where you feel there was like cream on the lens
Yes, it can certainly be overdone!
I like the simplicity of your technique, thanks for sharing!
Great to hear - glad it was helpful!
I always learn something interesting and useful from your videos. Thanks Mark!
Great to hear Paula! This is such a fun technique to play with - it works well on just about any photo.
Thank you for spending time sharing your knowledge - much appreciated !
Always happy to do it Jane and many thanks to you for watching!
Thanks for your video this week. I’ve seen a few videos about this effect and yours is by far the easiest to understand. I’ll definitely have a go with some of my old photos. Thanks again, Jack.
Thank you Jack! And many thanks to you for watching!
As a new photographer and new to lightroom, I find your videos very helpful and great to follow. Thank you.
Glad to hear it Steven - thank you!
Mark, your presentation style is extraordinary, among the very best videos I’ve viewed, but more importantly, your content is substantive and easily understood.
for what it’s worth, Luminar4 has a slider for the orton effect. One additional thing I learned is that I need a new monitor as the effects appeared very minor on my display.
Another helpful video. Never really knew the difference between texture and clarity. Thanks for all the information.
It's a subtle difference but nevertheless it's a difference:) Thanks for watching!
Love that shirt. I hear the animals are taking over in Yosemite. I can't wait to get back in. 😷🥂
Thanks David! I'm looking forward to getting back as well!
Same I have a planned trip for May 27, hopefully corona won’t interfere

Thanks so much Tonia! I hope the same for you as well!
Thank you for another informative tutorial 👍
Thank you, Mark! I’m learning PS as my lockdown skill development project. Learning how to create and when to apply the Orton effect is exactly one of the things I want to learn to take my post processing skills to the next level. So, thank you and I hope you are doing well too!
Thanks for this awesome video and knowledge!

Thanks so much - that's great to hear!
Thank you so much for this great video, Mark! I'm a Lightroom newbie and this is the clearest and most helpful example of just one of the effects that Lightroom offers. I look forward to viewing your other helpful videos.
Thanks so much Donna! Great to hear you enjoyed it!
Very informative video with great content. Thanks very much for sharing!! 🙂
Hi Mark. We are all well , here thanks for the well wishes. This is the first time I've seen Lightroom used to create an Orton-like effect, very useful, thank you. Thanks always for sharing and please stay safe.
I’m fairly new to your channel. Absolutely loving it. I’ve hit the subscription and notification bell.
David Edwards Thanks so much David! Really happy to hear this!

DID enjoy the video ... as always, simple to understand and to the point without fake drama.
Thank you Denise!
Very helpful, thanks Mark
You have such a great manner of teaching, it's no surprise your following has swelled to over 100k subscribers so quickly.
Fantastic video the dehaze trick is amazing tried it out on a few of my less impressive images and it totally transformed them, thanks.
Great to hear it was helpful!
love the Sony walkman!
Nice demo Mark! I like the soft dreamy effect. I use Luminar by Skylum which has two types of Orton filter that come with saturation and brightness sliders.
Thanks so much! I've never used Luminar, but have always heard great things about it!
A different way to apply the orton effect, very interesting, thank you ☀️
Marinallia Thanks so much for checking it out!
Great techniques!! Can't wait to apply this technique to my photos. Thank you for another great tutorial!!

Hahha! Thanks Patrick!
Man you’re about to hit 100k subs! Congrats in advance, well deserved.
Thanks so much Dan - I still can't believe it!
Thanks for the Lightroom explanation. I have only seen PS examples before. I'm working my way up to PS, but not there yet. Will be experimenting with this in LR now. Cheers. Stay safe! (BTW, we're all coming over to your house to celebrate when you hit 100K!)
That would be awesome!! See ya then Andy!
hi mark,
I love your setting and eye for the detail in what is in your scene as you set your video up. I am always aware of the lighting on your back wall.. love todays soft purple effect, and what you have to your left. Today you have the usb fob and an old yellow walkman. Love it! Great memories though how you have managed to keep a walkman around all these years..... What are your thought process going into the props around you during your video lessons? Thank you for wonderfully clear and well articulated topics. You are a joy to watch and love your 'quirky' and poised backgrounds. :)
Good Job Mark-- Love the way you explained how to do the effect -- will have to try it.
Thank you Michael!
How cool to see some else still has a Sony Walkman 😀
Wonderful video, I learned a new technique that I can use in my landscape photography!!!
Amazing tutorial! It reminds me of Albert Bierstadt sort of look.
Thank you for another informative video. How or where did you learn about post processing? Thank you again for sharing and stay safe.
Thanks Peter! It's all basically from a ton of trial and error, research and experimenting.
Mark Denney Thank you
Thanks for these tips Mark! I find landscape photography very interesting. :)
Glad to do it and thanks for checking out the video!
@@MarkDenneyPhoto You're welcome! By the way, are you a Christian and did you know Jesus died for you sins?

Thanks Jake! Still can't believe it!
Another great Video.
Margaret Thomas Thanks so much!
Really nice effect for some really nice photos!
Thank you David!
MARK ...thank's again for a fine tutorial. Finally understood the effect. By the way, I was not able to get the T-Shirt from Hippy Tree, they don't have my size; great Tee, will wait. Un abrazo de México.
Used to do something similar somewhat but by the "hard way" and changing the blend to either Soft Light or Overlay (and controlling the HSL too). Strangely I seldom use it to landscape shots but more to portraits!
Such awesome tricks ! Thank you...
Great video . Thank you. There is a Blast from the Past on your desk; Sony Walkman.
Thanks Patrick! The Sony Walkmans were the best!!
Hi Mark! Just revisited this video for probably the 3rd or 4th time. While I do enjoy the results you achieve with these effects, could you please explain the reasoning behind focus stacking and exposure blending? It seems to me that these Orton Effect techniques simply reintroduce the “imperfections” achieved by taking only one image. Why go to all of the work to achieve a “perfect” image by combining several together, if you then want to intentionally reduce the sharpness and clarity? Any help you could give to improve my understanding would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, and keep the videos coming!
Thanks for a brilliant tutorial.
Thank you Wendy!
In regarding the Orton effect, do it with smart objects instead, as they are not destructive, and you can come back and adjust levels (which I use) later.
Casper Pedersen Indeed👍
Thank you. Great tips in this video!
Thanks so much!
I love this effect. Great tutorial.
Thanks Amanda!
Thanks again for the video, you have helped so much. No more over editing or horrible compositions. Do you dabble in wildlife photography at all? I find there isn't too much information on it (CZcams anyway)
No I don't do much outside of landscape photography
"orton Effect" explained in a neat way. Great job Mark as usual.
Thanks so much!
Well done! TY!
Great, now I have something to test when I have a leave. I only work 60% for now because of the Covid. I have some photographs that be a contender for this.
Hope you enjoy using the technique!
That was very helpful, thank you for walking through that process. ok now this doesn't have anything to do with the content but I cant help wondering about that lens on the shelf behind you, it's there in like every video. What lens is it? It kind of looks like a Canon L, but I guess it could be something else. Is there any reason it has become a permanent fixture on your wall? I guess it could be like one of those Canon L series mugs...
Great idea
Thanks Martin!
Your editing style is very similar to Nigel Danson's. Like the look, must experiment with it. Thanks for the tips Mark.
you really need to try luminar , its so much faster procedure!!
Thank you 🌷
Hey Mark, another excellent video on how we can enhance our post-processing skills. And your explanations are so easy to follow. Thank you! BTW, I know that Luminar has a specific Orion tool. Have you tried that? If so, your thoughts? (Almost any- and everything is easier and so much user-friendly than PS). Once again, thank you for sharing this skill with us.
As always I enjoy your ability to explain things in a manner in which I can understand. In this instance I still find the concept of layering and brush tools still out of my reach in Lr and Ps. I think I would do better with one of your 1-2-1 sessions.
Awesome video
Love your videos Mark, but I wish you would shift from Lr/Ps when I don't have the subscription-model of these programs but just Lr 6.14 (stand - alone), to Gimp/Darktable or Rawtherapee :-).
Your are a great teacher, Mark! Thank you :) I'm just starting to learn Photoshop and I have a question: what do you do with the Background and the Orton versions? Do you save the Orton layer as an independent image or do you blend them?
Hi Mark, would you use the orton effect on wildlife photos. If so, subject or background? Or both?
Thanks
Damn your landscape photography is always 🔥
Hi, thank you very much for your help Mark. I was asking myself .. do you go for some small adjustments in lightroom first like tone curve, exposure or whatever and then hit ,,open in photoshop" to add the orton effect? Or do you open the raw image first in photoshop, add the orton effect and then open that one in lightroom to finish it off? Thanks a lot!!
great video!! i was wondering if there's any way to get this effect on videos?
Is that a Sony Walkman on your desK?
Indeed it is! It was my first portable music player
I wonder if that's the effect I see in some people's moss, or grassy mounds.
Rodbotic It’s quite possible.
I just take a fog machine with me 😂
Would you use it on water? Waterfall? Sand? A person in a landscape? :)
Id rather have better dynamic range than more pixels. My images are never going to be billboards. So megapixels are lost.
Video 550.004.675.456. 345.985.745. 345 on... Orton
The Bob Ross of photography! Your friendly voice and demeanor really connect your great advice with the viewer! Just found you and followed you on IG! I’m @starved_artist_vt. Thanks for all your great content!
Hahaha! Thanks Damien!
Mark Denney You are welcome!
I'm way to lazy for all that Mark, I just use the Orton effect in Luminar 4
easy way to do this - get a Nikon D700!
Hahahha!
The easiest and cheapest way to blur the picture, is to use the nikon D40)
Feather...flow...same diff. 🤣
Thanks for this video Mark. Learnt something new. Can u tell me what technique this guy uses on Instagram @simexposure. Can u check this profile and tell me please.
Thanks so much! I'll take a look.
Ps. Hey Mark. Tagged you on insta for the photos. It’s my latest post. It’s pretty cool. I overdid it a little just to highlight the effect. @sonymagician
I'll check it out!
Hey Mark! Love the videos, your editing tutorials are really enjoyable to watch. Keep them coming! Could you perhaps do a video on how to make a consistent feed on instagram?
