- Captain Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown - who holds the world record for flying the greatest number of different aircraft - delivered the University’s Mountbatten Lecture in February 2015.
During his talk, Captain Brown draws on his wealth of experience to discuss the UK’s current defence strategy and predict what might happen in the near future.
Recorded on Tuesday 24 February 2015 at the Playfair Library, Old College, the University of Edinburgh.
Very informative. Lucid and knowledgeable speaker at the age of 96. Extraordinary man, RIP.
RIP Sir. You were certainly one of a kind. A great Scot and a brilliant pilot.
Such a sharp and witty mind he had which will be sorely missed. Much thanks to you Sir RIP"Winkle"
This is a true speech from a very experienced man and should be taken seriously a great man Eric Melrose brown I respect him so much
Absolutely amazing, need someone like Eric to be PM, would make Britain a strong and powerful nation once again. We need these opinions on defence nowadays, we need to be the strongest military in Europe and 4th or 5th in the world.
You are the strongest military in Europe.
What a absolute legend Mr Eric Winkle Brown really was👏🏻👏🏻 RIP
I had the privilege of going to a talk by Captain Brown in 2014. I felt as if the real Baron Munchausen, not the comic version, had come to life, his stories were amazing. I was literally shaking my head in astonishment at what he had seen and done.
A brilliant and courageous guy...RIP..
Rule Britannia .Captain Eric Melrose Brown. Royal Navy ,Fleet Air Arm. Gentleman. RIP .
That such a man was never granted a knighthood is a telling indictment of the so-called establishment - a colossus by any measure. not that he needed it - the man warranted and received total respect. (the introduction of his extraordinary life did not mention his connection to Neil Armstrong and Yuri Gagarin ... for example). A truly inspirational human being.
Everyone who knows anything about flying knows about him. My teenage nephew plays flight simuator games and knows about him.
I wonder if he ever took a day off? A true hero.
Eric Melrose brown knows what he is saying
Next UK carrier.....HMS winkle brown...let's start naming after heroes not zeros
58:28 Maritime patrol aircraft will be twin-engined, i.e. P-8. Unfortunately the Nimrod MRA4 was cancelled.
One of the few.
What a Gent
RIP Winkle. We have lost a true hero. I do so hope we will get both our new carriers operational with aircraft. Thanks to our b......y politicians we have 2 aircraft carriers and no planes, only helicopters. It is almost the same as having new big guns and no ammo
With no nuclear force we are sitting ducks for those who have the bomb. With the bomb, others will think twice before attacking.
So - coming back to look at this again in 2021, with Britain no longer being a part of the European Union we have a somewhat altered situation. Clearly we need both to be continuing co-operation with the EU and also working up an independant capability with which to co-operate with other nations in the event that a serious situation develops in which the EU cannot agree upon action. This does unavoidably necessitate increased defence spending, so as a nation we must accept this.
There can be no doubt that we not only must retain a nuclear weapons capability, but that also the only secure way to deploy that capability is by submarine. Aircraft carriers are wonderful force projectors - but only when not in a conflict with another global power. In such a conflict, the first things you lose are your carriers. They are great big things that cannot hide from satellites and cannot escape from or survive nuclear ballistic missiles. Even if such weapons are not immediately used, they have already been repeatedly shown to be nothing but targets to submarines, no matter how impressively escorted.
what is her accent?
South/East Scottish
Susan Deacon is from Edinburgh and has a Scottish accent.
One thumbs down? I didn’t know that amoebas could use a keyboard 🤔🇬🇧
It's not a thumb down it's a thumb up done by a pilot doing a inverted fly by
It was the pilot of a Condor.
Wow he says economic sanctions against Russia can do a lot of damage and all 6 years ago. Plus he adds you don't go into war in half measures it's all or nothing . Thank goodness Russia never picked up on this
TO KEEP UP? think outside the box drones easily put carriers out of action wave top hight 5 drones end of carrier.
Had Captain Brown been English - you would have had to introduce him as 'Sir'.
What a travesty of respect for yet another of Scotland's National Treasures.
@Happy Bear Eric Brown was awarded CBE, OBE and MBE! which is extraordinary. However, I do think he should have been knighted.
How can he sit crossed legged ! With them balls of steel
