Absolutely amazing, need someone like Eric to be PM, would make Britain a strong and powerful nation once again. We need these opinions on defence nowadays, we need to be the strongest military in Europe and 4th or 5th in the world.

I had the privilege of going to a talk by Captain Brown in 2014. I felt as if the real Baron Munchausen, not the comic version, had come to life, his stories were amazing. I was literally shaking my head in astonishment at what he had seen and done.

That such a man was never granted a knighthood is a telling indictment of the so-called establishment - a colossus by any measure. not that he needed it - the man warranted and received total respect. (the introduction of his extraordinary life did not mention his connection to Neil Armstrong and Yuri Gagarin ... for example). A truly inspirational human being.

RIP Winkle. We have lost a true hero. I do so hope we will get both our new carriers operational with aircraft. Thanks to our b......y politicians we have 2 aircraft carriers and no planes, only helicopters. It is almost the same as having new big guns and no ammo
With no nuclear force we are sitting ducks for those who have the bomb. With the bomb, others will think twice before attacking.

So - coming back to look at this again in 2021, with Britain no longer being a part of the European Union we have a somewhat altered situation. Clearly we need both to be continuing co-operation with the EU and also working up an independant capability with which to co-operate with other nations in the event that a serious situation develops in which the EU cannot agree upon action. This does unavoidably necessitate increased defence spending, so as a nation we must accept this.
There can be no doubt that we not only must retain a nuclear weapons capability, but that also the only secure way to deploy that capability is by submarine. Aircraft carriers are wonderful force projectors - but only when not in a conflict with another global power. In such a conflict, the first things you lose are your carriers. They are great big things that cannot hide from satellites and cannot escape from or survive nuclear ballistic missiles. Even if such weapons are not immediately used, they have already been repeatedly shown to be nothing but targets to submarines, no matter how impressively escorted.
