- Legendary test pilot, Capt. Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown, highlights some of the record breaking 487 aircraft types he flew during World War II and his time at the RAE Farnborough, including the Gloster Gauntlet, the Grumman Wildcat & Hellcat, Miles M.52, General Aviation GAL.56 and the de Havilland DH 108 TG306. Brown also tells us the story of how he made the world’s first jet landing on an aircraft carrier, how he witnessed the first flight of a British jet aircraft and discusses his post-war mission to Germany, including his interview with Hermann Goering.
Capt Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown CBE, DSC, AFC, KCVSA, PhD Hon FRAeS, RN gave the RAeS FAA Yeovilton Branch Inaugural Brown Named Lecture on 29 July 2014. The audio version of the podcast was edited by Eur Ing Mike Stanberry FRAeS.
If only everyone could be as humble as this man. RIP Eric.
Could listen to him all day.what a man
95 years old, speaking coherently and still with a fairly sharp memory. 👍
I could listen all day to this amazing man tell the stories of his life in aviation. He was such a great speaker and seemed like such a down to earth gentleman.
What an incredible man to have put his life on the line continuously . We owe him so much - if ever anyone deserves a knighthood - he did !!!
What he found out about aircraft performance and safety saved hundreds of aircrew lives.
Unfortunately we're too busy giving them to dishonest politicians and spoiled pedo movie stars
An amazing man. A master aviator who was so modest and matter of fact about his huge list of achievements. A great presentation.
A absolutely great hero
Captain Brown continues to be one of the United Kingdom's national treasures. God rest the world's greatest naval aviator.
A great man, amazing accomplishments, a life lived to its full.
WHAT A LEGEND MY HERO.
This was an excellent presentation (though the camera operator didn't show all the slides...), with quite a few details not given in his other talks on CZcams. What a amazing life!
Such a shame more of the slides aren’t shown
Such a shame that the clowns responsible for documenting this are so incompetant. Give the Man a lapel mic, put the slides where he and us can see them, get the sound right and show this guy the RESPECT he rightly earned.
One of Britain's greatest men
I nave watched this video three times.
Excellent presentation by a very modest man. Disappointed that the cameraman could not pick up on the slides. Obviously not a aviation enthusiast.
What an opening sentence"as my good friend Neil Armstrong said"
If only it was true.
@@AviViljoenit was you bastard
Was he ever Knighted?
He was amazing. My hero. Good things come in small packages.
Bless the man.
Totally agree. Captivating talk, my hero
Winkle was, as always, wonderful! The camera man however didn't seem to grasp that photographs do little good if they are not seen!
When Winkle got into a plane, the odds were often against him. That is a testimony, to his great bravery and amazing skills.
Thank you.
Come in the back door eh? Cheeky old lad. lol. Thanks uploader.
This man is my hero rest in peace sir
What an amazing orator. One of the greatest pilots to ever live. I could listen to him speak everyday for the rest of my life. It's a true shame he's gone.
I would love to watch this again, this time with a decent cameraman and someone who knows how to synchronise properly. I first read a book about this man years ago. I wish I had been at this event. I would have thought that the RAS would be more competent than shown here.
I am so in awe of this man !
-Tragically, the sound is absolutely atrocious !
Much better when he moved away from the microphone.
-Did no one check the sound beforehand ???
Never can a man fly so many types of aircraft again.
What an amazing talk. What a travesty that the filming was so poor. What a disgrace that half the audience saw fit to interrupt and leave for a bus 10 mins before the end. It would be excellent if the RAeS would consider editing this presentation to show all of the slides that were being referenced throughout the talk.
It would be relatively easy to get the slides and insert them in post. That is the trouble with using professionals from the wrong profession to shoot video. Hire a cameraman and he'll get it right - the sound, the lighting, the editing.
Never has any man, risked his life so many times, on so many aircraft, for as such as long as he had, and survived and thrived on such adversity and challenge as Eric "Winkle" Brown. I'm only sorry he didn't get to fly the X-15.
Amazing
It’s intriguing he says Americans would never get to breaking sound barrier first even tho the North American xp-86 was the true first jet to break the sound barrier 13 days before chuck yager in his Bell aircraft and bell was the manufacturer that received the work of the UK. However even tho their was strong evidence supporting the claims of the Sabre it wasn’t officially observed on either October 1 or the 14th. The 14th happened 30 mins before yagers flight as well. With that being said I love that our countries can work together and this man is just purely amazing. He had 2407 carrier landings and flew 387 different aircraft that’s nuts
The escort carrier HMS Audacity, was orginially a german merchant ship called "Hannover".
Great lecture but the cameraman seemed rooted to Winkle and steadfastly ignored the pics he wanted everyone to see. RIP Captain, a legend and a man small in stature but mighty in the art of controlling aeroplanes!
Amazing listening to this great man of Aviation. So interesting RIP Eric winkle Brown. Is this his last talk?
He needs a movie made about him
He doesn't.
An amazing man, but this video could had been better if it had shown ALL the slides Captain Brown was referring to. Sloppy camera work from people who should had known better.
This man epitomises courage, patriotism and professionalism. If the average socialist achieves a tenth of what he accomplished, the UK would be a better place.
Should have had a Knighthood. ❤😢
How did they fail to give him a knighthood?
2 thumbs down?
No, its the man who is important, photos can be recovered, but so much information from this mans mouth can never be recovered .
Those ill-mannered people leaving to catch the bus five minutes before the end, couldn’t the driver wait…😡
So Eric is the original source for 'hit the brakes he'll fly right by' and his generation saying, 'kick the tyres and light the fires' top gun is all plagiarism. Thank you for your service. Very interesting. And f u tom cruise.
The fact that this man never received a knighthood is a disgrace.
This Guy is a Hero: They give Knighthoods to idiots now
