Christian Finnegan's joke about Belgium is great. I was in Brussels about 15 years ago, traveling for business, and I went to a grocery store, DelHaize, to get something to eat to bring back to my hotel. The bags they gave out there had the phrase, "Live the way you like" in four different languages (Flemish, French, English, and Dutch, I think, but I don't really know the difference between Dutch and Flemish) printed on them. I loved that so much, because I only speak 3, and brought them back to my friends in New York to give out as souvenirs. If any European, ESPECIALLY from Belgium, gets on an American's case for only speaking one or two languages (most of us speak English and Castilian Spanish, maybe French if they live in Maine or Louisiana), I think it's completely appropriate to laugh at him or her for being from a teeny tiny country surrounded by other small countries with different languages. The history of the USA was dominated by the British. Yes, the Spaniards got in there and most of the western land mass used to be Mexico, the French got in and grabbed a bunch of stuff at the bottom and the tip northeast top, the Dutch punched a hole straight into New York, but the Brits won. It was a very large country to proceed to kill and rape their way across, and they did it, hence the majority of Americans have English as their primary language. Not hard to understand how that happened.
