      because Asians are realistic. Only 1 in 5000 succeed in Art and Culture types of work. Well granted, success in finance is difficult too... but if you have the brains for it (which most normal migrant capable Asians are), it is a matter of will rather than capability. Anyway going to pursue "dreams" are for the "rich". I guess when his dad got to America the dad was rich enough situationally to let their son go on a "problematic" arts and culture type of work. Only in places where poverty is prevalent it is clear for kids to strive hard in education like even in India ratio of men and women in STEM are almost proportional since goal is to earn rather than pursue "dreams". After you are rich enough to go to 1st world country you get to have the privilege for your kids to "fail" in art.

      @naddakeeps9964 Před 2 lety +11

      It's not pride it's ego. It's bullshit that a father's form of "pride" is to downplay and demean his son's accomplishments. And I feel it shows on Jimmy's face that it still effects him, even if he has accepted it.

    • @LorienzoDeGarcia
      @LorienzoDeGarcia Před rokem +24

      I won't lie, got a bit pissed reading this comment. Where was his dad then before he "made it"? Only put-downs, even when he's on CBS, and even when his father accepted that he "made it", he downplayed his son's struggle by saying "You did it, I must be able to, because it must've been EASY.", then proceeds to ride off his son's connections and existing reputation. And since older Asians are whole less-than-likely to be in the acting sphere because of the you must be 1. Doctor 2. Lawyer 3. Engineer or 4. Disgrace to family thing, there are probably shortage of older Chinese actors with a decent amount of confidence in Hollywood with a genuine authentic accent and that's an advantage to casting. Then becomes entitled and thinks suddenly he somehow can have theatre gigs with 500 people.
      All's well ends well, but his father wasn't a good supporter of his own son, but the first to be "proud" and capitalize on his son's success. You all laugh, but there's more pain in this than meets the eye. Even if Jimmy denies it, this is the reality of how a lot of Asian kids are treated by their parents.

It is not uncommon at all for one person to put in years of effort and hard work to become successful and once they do they can very easily catapult people around them right up to the top with them. A LOT of careers in the world, and acting especially, is like 30% skill and 70% just knowing the right people. Being close to someone already successful is 10x more likely to land you a successful job of your own rather than being someone extremely talented with no connections.

    He was imitating his own Dad on stage. Chill, witty, confident, high emotional IQ, charming. Dad was smart enough to see it. Came and claimed his piece of the pie.
    His Dad did went toe to toe with Malkovich and made the scene look flawless.
    Hopefully we get to see more of his Dad.

    Dad comes along and just kills at acting and comedy
    Everything going great at the start then the jealousy grows into full on murderous hate
    And ends with a heartwarming reconciliation where they both say they just wanted each to be proud of each other
