Big News - Land Uplift Confirmed in Iceland's Largest Caldera

- InSar data has confirmed 4cm land uplift in the Torfajökull Caldera and it is of course big news that the largest caldera in Iceland seems to be getting ready for the first eruption since the year 1477. I have therefore changed my travel plans for the rest of the summer, in need more footage from this region in addition to all the other video tasks i have in order to make the most from my upcoming updates about this region.
As always, channel supporters have numerous options to support my work that includes considerable travel cost.

Love the footage, and updates, Gylfi, and all the best with your new road tour, and good weather.
Thanks, the first tour video is now online :)
yep, standing by to stand by here !
Just got back from the supermarket and have stocked up on treats / munchies etc.
One should always be ready for a show here in Iceland :)
Thank you for the update. Never a dull moment in Iceland, but I sure hope there will not be an eruption like the one that caused the large caldera. Have a good trip 👍
I find it very difficult to try to understand what is going on there because it is so complicated system, but i will do my best to have a great trip, and thanks 👍
@@JustIcelandicdoes it s2em like essentially this will depend on how long it takes to erupt. An eruption soon is lightly or non explosive as not much pressure had built up. But for every couple months more and more gas builds. Unless fumerol3s allow sufficient venting hut that usually doesn't happen
It looks as if the mountain behind Landmannalaugar has been eroded by what I imagine was a huge flood. If that is what happened, it's scary to think that the "main tourist spot" in that area could again be swept clean. Thanks for this and all the other excellent videos you've made. They're beautiful and thought-provoking. Your narration sets the complex landscape in historical and geological contexts. Thanks!
Thanks a ton, hope to bring back lots of footage from the there :)

Thank a ton :) the summer light tends to be too soft for my taste so i'm hoping to be able to play around a bit, spent way more time than i planned in front of the computer this summer, but then, we just got an eruption 😊
I simply cannot wait to come back to Iceland someday. It's not even about the eruptions! I just love it.

Was at the eruption sight on 30 July, what an experience. I picked up a hitchhiker about a week later in the west fjords - he said he had been there also. His description of the sounds told me for certain that he had been there.

New one online now and welcome back :)
If there is rhyolite involved around or at Torfajökull, there's a big chance that a possible eruption will be rather explosive.
Yes so i hear, this is fabulous region and i would like to check out Hrafntinnusker as well, there is no way to be guessing where it could erupt now, so the task for me is to cover as much area as i possibly can with the drone.
@@JustIcelandic Have a safe trip! :-)
Yeah that can't be good. I don't want to be that doom and gloom guy, but eruptions involving rhyolite magma are rather explosive, unless the gas escapes before the eruption starts, then it produces some rather thick lava flows. But that doesn't always happen.
@JustIcelandic My ears pricked up at the word "rhyolite"... thats not a tourist eruption... nope it is not.

It is always amusing, when some good scientists are discussing their own speciality and get fiery and are like warriors for a high truth.
I'm sure they have plenty to talk about now :)
Thanks for sharing Gylfi. I've been to Fjallabak, Landmannalaugar 5 times now and also hiked the Laugavegur on one of those visits. Weather has been 50/50 blue skies and moody and probably difficult to predict days in advance. It is an amazing region which I enjoy visiting most of all of Iceland. I found I don't care too much what weather it is there although sunset and sunrise photography and droning require no fog... A couple of weeks ago I wanted to climb Blahnukur mountain for sunset / sunrise (only 4h apart) but it was too cloudy and spent the evening in the geothermal pool instead
It's obvious that you truly know how to get the most from my country :) and i respect that....welcome back anytime :)
@@JustIcelandic Thanks, Yes, I've been travelling to Iceland 5 times now since 2017 but I guess locals like yourself know also good spots that aren't tourist infested yet. My trip including the volcano visit was certainly not my last.

Gylfi,
just a quick tip, whatever way you approach the Landmannalaugar region, try and avoid the North part of the F208 use the F225 instead. The road is horrific, too much transport from tourist coaches has badly rutted this road and it is a hour of hell. Don't ask me how I know.
I love the graphics from CNES/Airbus, Maxar. I tried to find out how much it cost to use but was unsucessful.
But it's a great feature of your videos. And money well spent. Thanks.
Thanks for the tip, will skip the 208 this time, the 225 is better for sightseeing and close to Hekla, I need that detour... but I have a tip for you, the Google feature is free but you need to apply for Google Earth Studio and the rest is easy :) and greetings from Iceland :)
@@JustIcelandic From Google Earth Studio (GES) FAQ: "Can I use Earth Studio for commercial applications?"

Safe travels! Looking forward to your updates once you return. Thanks so much for this very enjoyable video - as always amazing scenery!
Thanks so much!
A hotspot can be large enough to supply magma to a wide area. If you look at the 3D modeling of the plumbing underneath Yellowstone, you see magma chambers are a complex mess. No reason it would be any different under Iceland.
You can almost guarantee that there’s a magma chamber feeding the caldera, not a direct mantle plume, because of the rhyolitic composition. Rhyolite is a high-silica magma, and you get those by sitting underground long enough to differentiate as iron and manganese rich crystals form and settle out. Or by starting with partial melting of a sub ducted slab, which you don’t get at a diverging boundary of course.
This i why i didn't learn geology :) ISO and Shutter Speed is way easier :) and thank you very much for your input :)
@@JustIcelandic Gylfi, I think you have picked up a lot of practical geology since you started covering the volcanoes. 👍🌋 But yeah, it can get into a crazy amount of information sometimes…
And then you might get magma mixing after differentiation, with a new volatile content, and watch out.
As usual, beautiful photography!
Thank you so much 😀
Thank you for the video! I hope you have a safe trip around your country, and I wish you the best of luck in obtaining footage useful for your channel.

What I like about Iceland is the adventure side of hikes and off road trip.
I agree :)
And waterfalls.
Thanks! good video and be careful on your trip! So your exhaust system was exhausted lol pretty funny! I had a good laugh from that. I hope if it doesn't erupt it won't ruin those beautifully colored hills around that area if it does. Those are gorgeous! I know in south America they have some hills very similar all streaks of different colored minerals like that from old volcanos. I think in Peru? ok, have fun! I will look forward to your next video when you return form your trip. I hope the weather cooperates and you get some good drone footage of that area.

Good evening Gylfi,
Are all the volcanic systems on Iceland waking up one after another?
Hotspots don’t move as far as I know but the plate above it does.
We’ll be eager waiting for your footage but stay safe.
Greetings from the Netherlands.
I have to say that Torfajökull looks way more like a "hot spot" to me than the ice filled caldera Bárðarbunga :) but it's right that there are so many systems showing activity now, way more than usual i have to say.
Peace!

@@JustIcelandic ☮️!
fascinating place you live in sir, have you ever done any prospecting, with so much volcanism there are I am sure some juicy mineral specimens to be found.
Thankyou for sharing
I would love to do gold prospecting :) gold has been confirmed in Icelandic sold but I'm sure there are less than 20 metal detectors in the country :)
@@JustIcelandic thats the beauty of prospecting geologically rather than with a detector, you can often find it by association with other minerals and in very easily alluvial deposits.
I reckon you could find some of the right quartz types and do a crush then pan it out to find it
Any uplifting or increased thermal activities should carry more importance where tectonic plates are pulling apart,as opposed to subduction.
I'm wondering if volcanic eruptions follow a pattern (geological time) , moving along the fault line,or just randomly? Does a major eruption remove pressure for a while, or is it followed by more activity?👍🌏
If you want to know more about the mechanics, search for the term 'magmatic intrusion'. There is always new pressure from tectonic movement but you'll find less of the localized 'hot spot' activity you find in Hawaii and Yellowstone and places like that because of the complex intersection of plates and plate movements. Much of the country is a hot spot. It's a big area of much activity with a preference for activity along fault lines.
Thank you :)
I have to admit that i'm way better with ISO and shutter speed and there are others that can do this answer way better than me :)
Volcanic eruption can follow a pattern, when you have a long term, stable system fueling it. We might see something with the recent Fagradalsfjall eruption sequence.
But unfortunately our earth is very dynamic, even on short time scales. That's why you can never say an eruption is "overdue". This gets especially more complicated for explosive eruption where the magma has to go through differentiation first such as Torfajökull.
Have a great adventure, I hope you get the weather and light you need. I think there could be some truth in Torfajökull being on or near the centre of the Icelandic system, I had previously always wondered how Katla could be so powerful, when it appeared almost isolated from where main centre was supposed to have been. There is so much more to discover.
I was filming in the Torfajokull caldera, Laki and Eldgjá and more places this week....Big show soon
@@JustIcelandic That's a lot of work, you'll need a holiday when you get home.
Thanks.

Nice. But I'll seriously start to worry for you when the ice melts suddenly like on the lake of ""askjval"" or something like that.

This is far away from inhabited areas, and its not a coincidence :)
HiyaWant to ask what your comment meant? I smell a Conspiracy?@@JustIcelandic
Is it possible that the chain of islands that continue on to the southwest, and is in line with the complex are related? Perhaps a continuation of the zone off coast?
islands have been coming and going there, the ocean takes them often back and i dont expect Iceland to grow in that direction :)
I'd love to live in Iceland - life here is far too noisy and warm
Welcome, it's not hot here for sure :)

Welcome👍
The main Iceland hot spot, rising caldera, rhyolitic, could be like Krakatoa. Or a cute lava pool for the tourists from neighbouring magma channel.
I have new video online now from the caldera
Any volcanic area that can produce a large eruption, or one that can produce a explosive eruption that threatens nearby towns or cities, or a much larger area like what happened in 2010 should be monitored closely.
Also, since hotspots can be large, in terms of volume and area, it's possible that the Icelandic hotspot could be under both volcanic areas, with them being on the edges, possibly. Or with the Bardabunga being on the center of the hotspot and the other near the edge.
Always welcome :)
I wonder what the uplift threshold is for them to be seriously worried?
Have fun on your trip!
The uplift threshold hasn't been mentioned at all but i know that scientists have asked for money to place more equipment up there so they seem very serious about this
Exciting💯

While an eruption now may not follow the “years between eruptions “ pattern. At this time our earth is experiencing a reduced magnetic shield as well as shifting magnetic poles. I haven’t heard scientists calculate in this once in 6 or 12,000 year events. Love your videos. My evening routine in 2021/22/23 was to watch the Iceland and Hawaii volcanoes after dinner. Loved watching the summer night sky in Iceland!
That's an interesting connection. I have read about both of those things. I seems like the shifting poles, in particular, could possibly have some kind of impact on volcanic activity. I suspect that is something that geologists don't have enough information to even speculate on.
Thank you :) this is all very complicated up there but when i come back with some footage, i might try to get an expert so explain my findings :)
Wow an automatic system against the rise of the sea level.
Exactly :)
Thank you again. Love your drone footage and videos, but don't risk your safety. I can't imagine what it would be like living in volcanic hotspot such as Iceland...both exciting and scary at the same time 😊
