  • How to Topcoat your Gunpla with BOSNY NO 191 FLAT CLEAR
    Well, it seems this is my very first tutorial on GunPla Topcoating. It was originally requested by my avid follower @mob 1 and it took too long for me to make this video.
    I guessed it's better late than never right?
    In this video, I'll only be focusing on Bosny No. 191 Flat Clear Topcoat. Spray Cans. I'm pretty sure there are many other topcoat brand out there but this is the only topcoat I've been using since I started my Gunpla hobbies.
    I hoped this will help anyone, beginners or experienced builders when it comes to topcoating.
    I'm pretty sure I have not covered everything when it comes to this kind topcoating so if you have some suggestions, please let me know through the comment section below

      Well as they say, better late than never right? 🤣. Since I made this video specifically by your request, why would I topcoat a merely plainly looking kit, it needed to be detailed first. • @HyperWeaponHobby
      @HyperWeaponHobby  Před rokem +1

      There were only few kits that I build in which I have used Bosny Clear (gloss). I really preferred Matte or flat as my topcoat finished. Indeed, the gloss can be sticky at times and really not meant to be played with. My advised is using an additional wax (like the one you used to shine a motorcycle or bike). I think i have used one before (can't remember the brand) but the topcoat should be totally cured and dried before you wipe it with that substance. The good news is it will remove the stickiness feel, the bad news, it will become more slippery. Either way I believed when you topcoat a kit in gloss finished, it should never be played anymore (it should be displayed in a shelf for eternity 😂).

I do this method even during the rainy days and the heat applied by the hairdryer prevents the coat from frosting even in a relative humid environment. It depend on the level of frosting, if it is a mild frost, you can topcoat it again with a flat topcoat but do it in the blazing and scorching heat of sunlight, preferably noon, and ensure that there is no humidity. However, if the frosting is severe, the only way to removed it is thru soaking it an a thinner and hoped that it will only removed the paint and not damaged the plastic

      Articulation test is necessary when you build a kit out of the box. If the joints and pegs are good enough (meaning not to tight and not to loose), I cover them with masking tape when spraying topcoat. However, if the pegs and joints are loose or if I wanted to tighten them a little bit, I expose them during spraying of topcoat (this is the case in the video), it will create additional layer to provide good friction. If the layer is too thick and became tight, I sand it for adjustment. This kind of adjustment is necessary to ensure your kit will retain a dynamic articulation and movability for a long time

      @@carlolee8791 Handling bootleg kits can be quite a task, requiring extra effort (although some Bandai kits may also share similar issues). Personally, when it comes to topcoating, I always take the time to categorize the kits by module: head, arms, torso, waist, legs, backpacks, and accessories. It's a bit time-consuming, but this approach allows me to topcoat each part accurately. Of course, there's another aspect to consider when working with bootleg kits: building them and test fitting their parts to determine which ones fit well and which ones need adjustments. It's a whole different story than just "topcoating altogether", but an essential step to ensure a successful build.

      @@carlolee8791 That is correct. It's always a good idea to test things on kits or items, such as a plastic spoon, that you won't regret damaging. It's unfortunate what happened to those Bandai kits you had as a kid. When I was at that age, I also used to think of these kits (plastic robots that you have to assemble) as toy robots and would play with them accordingly. It was later that I realized model kits are different from actual toys. There are Gundam action figures that you can play with as toys. Model kits, on the other hand, are like a form of art that you can appreciate more than a toy, as they reflect the effort you put into assembling and detailing them. The satisfaction you derive from completing a model kit can be greater than purchasing an average toy. But hey, that's just my perspective. If people consider model kits as toys and enjoy playing with them that way, then that's perfectly fine for them.

    • @HyperWeaponHobby
      @HyperWeaponHobby  Před rokem

      Well that seems to be an issue. You should always remove the nubmark before topcoating. Topcoating is the last step in Gunpla detailing. If it were me then in depends in the severity of the presence of the nubmark. If it is located somewhere hidden that cannot easily be seen then i'll just let it be. But let say its a dark colored plastic and the nubmark can easily be seen and it also causes a stress where the spot of the nubmarks has whitened. I'll definitely repaint it. If i applied topcoat already, i will sand it first with 800 to 1000 grit of sandpaper and apply primer and paint it with a base coat of my choosing. Removing topcoat in a kit will require a thinner. My topcoat is bosny brand so a laquer thinner is what i would used to remove the topcoat (lacquer thinner is cheap, even the one that you can buy in hardware will do SO LONG AS YOU HAVE USED BOSNY SPRAY CANS) or you can do progressive sanding like i said earlier. You might even want to yse finer grit up to 2000 to nor scratch the plastic. Hoped this helps, if only i can be ellaborated on much details of your issue, i could probably help more accurately

After that, I will put my kits on display for eternity since I don't play with them, hence, the adjustment i did will definitely make them more intact as they are displayed for years too come. Recently, i have tried to play with the oldest kit i have topcoated and believed it or not, no loose or tightness, the kit is still good. 2. Only apply topcoat dyring sunny days (not on humid days)
      3. Get some hair blower with enough heat, when you spray with topcoat, immediately use the hairblower to prevent the frosting. When the parts has been partially dried by the hairblower, most of the time, it wont frost anymore

I didnt used this method since I have a tons of experience in precision on the coating i needed to apply on a kit and never get any frosted result. But according to others, putting the spray can of topcoat specially flat/matte on hot water will disperse the concentration of paint inside the bottle, hence it will prevent the frosting, apply this together with the hairblower and its a good combination or so they say

      @@HyperWeaponHobby ah , may be i did wrong by apply too much in the first layer, and not put spray can in hot water , thanks a lot, i'll try again :)

      @BaoNguyen-fu3fg first layer topcoat should be apllied thin, and so for second layer while using hairblower at each interval. About the hot water, that will definitely help. Alright, let me know how it goes when you tried it again

    Can you do a tutorial on detailing your Gundam like how you did it in 7:00?

    • @HyperWeaponHobby

      It's just basic panel lining and highlighting using Gundam Real Touch Marker. I think i have a video on my channel with in depth Real Touch Marker Tutorial (my first time actually) but i see your point, i will maybe upload a detailing tutorial as well

    boss ask ko lang pag nag .. paint ka ng gloss or flat tas may sand marks pa hinde naba sya magiging noticable pag pinaint tas same procedure yun gagawin sa ginwa mo?

    • @HyperWeaponHobby
      @HyperWeaponHobby  Před rokem

      It depends sir kung gano kalalim ung mga scratches sa sandmarks, usually hanggang 1,200 grit ang pinaka huling ginagamit ko sa progressive sanding pag unpainted or bare plastic ung kit na itotopcoat ko. Kaya almost hindi na noticeable ung sandmark. Pag ipapaint ko nman ung kit, hanggang 800 grit lang na sanding okay na sakin dahil sa primer pa lang tanggal na kung anu mang visible na sandmark. Yes sir, kahit sa pagpapaint, same procedure din ang gamit ko dahil pinapanipis ng init ng hairblower ang bosny paint. Makapal kasi ang concentration ng paint ng bosny dahil industrial grade ito at hindi hobby grade.

      I did that before and its useless in humid temperature. Youre kit wull stull get frosted. Just make sure you always shake the can before spraying it, afterwards, blowdry it immediately

      Actually applying DRY AIR (with a bit amount of heat) will prevent your kit from frosting when you topcoat it and it works most of the time. Hairblower, is a good source of dry air when the weather is not favorable for topcoating

      Yeah it works great that’s what I do just make sure the it stays warm (don’t wait too long after warming) and shake can often when your painting

      The hair blower I used is not hot enough to melt the plastic of the kit so ome should be aware of that as well
