As a wine enthusiast my friends introduced me to whiskey world. I never liked the whiskies that I drank. I realized that they were all blended whiskies. And because i like oak aged wines my friend gave me Bowmore 15 and i liked it very much. Now i am trying to experience all the Islay whiskies and right now enjoying a Caol Ila 12 for the first time. In the nose it is totally a tire smell for me :) Of course the smoke is there but that tire smell is very dominant.

Love this whisky. I've been told that this 12yo is being discontinued by a big local liquor distributor/store (norman good fellows in South Africa). Is this true? They have even taken the liberty to sell 200ml variations at high prices 'because they can.' I have actually seen that this 12yo is not readily available in stores but found 2 bottles at stores lesser known for stocking single malts and snapped them up.

    'Caol Ila': Sound of Ila.
Sound: a body of water, which comes from the old Norse word, 'sund' (strait).

My Mother makes a homemade whiskey, we call "Areque" in east Africa. She smokes the barley grain with Olive branches mixed with the leaves of "Arriti" (Artemisia Afra), The oak Barrels are washed with the leaves of "Grawa" /Vernonia amygdalina/ and also smoked with some types of dried leaves. The Fermentation of the Beer is a complex process I can't explain here from which the Areque /Whisky/ is drawn out of. This is a thousand years traditional drink made at almost ever city there, It needs some international recognition. A really complex drink if you ask me. Anyone interested to know or help, contact me.

revisit. currently having a ball with an ardbeg 10, bowmore 12, caol ila 12, talisker 10, highland park 12 and a laphroaig select open (i know, prefer the quarter cask, but the select is enjoyable). i agree about the CI 12 having a medicinal note - note like a Laph 10 mind you - but def medicinal.

the nosing did not make me look forward, but on first sip, i'm blown away. definitely going to savour all the bottles and this especially. steady rain, cold outside. soooo gonna enjoy this dram. ;-)

The select is garbage imo. The best one is the 10 but CS or its too watered down at 40%. I love Islay's and Islands in general.

The Coal Ila 17 Unpeated is very good, with a slight hint of peat.

foodquig I wonder if the 15 had less cask influence or weaker casks? Haven’t tried the 15 yet.

@@TripleBerg If anything, the cask influence was stronger... There was a lot more going on in my glass with the 15.

Question - How on earth do you people do this swishing and slurping of whiskey around your mouth for ages? I've tried it and it immediately destroys my sense of taste and just burns. I've been enjoying good whiskey for many years now and still just don't get this. Surely you're going to taste it better by just taking a small sip and a little breath or two of air.. not holding it in your mouth and treating it like mouthwash until your tongue is destroyed? I find it bizarre. I see people reviewing cigars in similar ways sometimes, holding the smoke in their mouth for ages. It only takes a few seconds until all you're doing is sullying and numbing your taste buds.

Bought myself a bottle Caol Ila 12 and I'm very disappointed. It's like they added 40% water to the whisky. Almost no flavour and nothing to smell. :(
Anyone here with the same experience?
