My name is Scott and Seven years ago I made the decision to live out of my 2015 Ram ProMaster City minivan. I did so because life became too expensive. I looked into getting more roommates and also looked at picking up another job or two, but those weren’t enticing options. The most appealing option was to stop paying rent and try vanlife.
So I set about deciding what I would need to be comfortable living out of a vehicle. In this video, we will look at the design and key items that I added to this little van. This is a very simple self built campervan. Nothing is difficult or complicated with the build-out. The last seven years have been about simplicity in minimalism. And the last seven years have been the most comfortable years of my life.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.
Please follow along as I document my journey.

I was age 60 when I realised my upcoming retirement looked to be one of poverty. So I ordered a 24' X 8' tiny house trailer and built a 2 level house on it. It has 2 upper bedrooms with 5'4' headroom (I'm less than that, so very comfortable), a living room, kitchenette, bathroom with a small bath and shower. There's a separate composting toilet too. I've been retired over 3 years and live on a farm, doing odd jobs in lieu of rent, power and WiFi. I keep an eye on the place when the owners are away too. I got rid of my car over 2 years ago and own 2 motorcycles, one large and the other small, for errands. I'm very happy and much better off than spending most of my pension on rent and other bills.

You either do this to travel and explore or save money.
    1. Find 2/3 places to sleep ASAP.
    2. Create a routine(shower, work, laundry, libraries,parks/lakes/beaches etc), place to buy coffee and food.
    This establishes normalcy.
    3. Treat yourself to a motel/hotel/airBNB 1-2 times a month to take a break.
    4. Pack necessities and essentials ONLY in the vehicle.
I moved into my SUV last year and it’s amazing. Saved over 40k in a year.
    I work 60-80hr weeks.
10/month at Panera for free coffee at all Panera breads.
    Planet Fitness - 20/month.
I have 3 rest areas/truck stops I can rotate throughout the week/month that are 20 miles from both jobs.
Small storage unit(optional) but I keep my bikes etc in here.
Looking to go another 2-5 years, turn in my SUV and get a van(small one). I’m 28 and don’t want to slow down, haven’t had an issue dating either although, relationships don’t last long- they do enjoy taking adventures with me lol..

Once you go minimalist, you start to realize that you really don't need about 80% all the junk you are and have acquired throughout your lifetime. I think this is what gives it such as liberating feeling knowing, you don't have tons of junk cluttering up your mind. You can use that surplus brain power to enjoy life which what we were meant to do. You are forced to focus on the needs of today not about yesterday or tomorrow, just like it says in the Scriptures.

Ive thought a lot about doing this and decided I would not want a huge vehicle either. They are harder to drive in the wind and mountains, harder to park, and more expensive to drive and buy as you mentioned.
I have a large dog though so would have to go up one from the size you are in.
Yes, who needs sticks and bricks home when you live in California anyway. It is the best weather there.
Many do this life because they want to travel a lot and whats the point of owning or renting if you are never there anyway.
You are a big hit here with the public and your numbers seem to be rising fast so you have the IT factor needed. Reminds me of Steve Wallis on youtube who people just love to watch. He is over a million already. You and he both have such a calming effect on people. 👏

I've ordered a fully off grid Mercedes Sprinter 519 extra long wheel base diesel 3.0 ltr V6 with 150 litres water, toilet and separate shower. It has everything. Solar panels, inverter, lithium batteries. The works. I have a 4 mtr trailer which I keep my trade goods I sell to retailer's. Income on the road.

4 years for me nor including 11 before that in a semi truck. My enclosed cargo trailer conversion isn't big enough for a permanent bed so I have a folding setup. I am very comfortable and it constantly improves. I did massive upgrades this year. My truck is a 2002 Chevy Avalanche and it is quite reliable despite having over 240,000 miles. It just keeps going. Rent and mortgages are a losing game for a single person. There is just no future in it unless you have a huge income. Now I couldn't care less. I have social security and some savings and I want for nothing.

It’s better than not having a life, which is what is required anymore. If anywhere across this country a person wants a house and transpiration they can expect to work at the very least 60 hours a week at one job plus have a side gig too. At the very least.
To have a life you have to jam it into a week a year, maybe two weeks a year if you last that long in a primary job.
Anymore and actually for quite some time, employers contract workers so they don’t have to treat them well or offer benefits.

The problem with me, is that I love books ( and I have a kindle but I just like having bookshelves full of them ). Everything else I could get rid of. My home gym: easy: sell it and join a gym. Don't need an office, if I have a simple laptop.
Like you, I'm from L.A. I moved to Boise, idaho for cheaper rent.. and then I decided I wanted a house, instead of the continual arguments with apartment neighbors over noise, so on my 5-figure income, I moved south to twin falls to be able to get a house.
But instead of getting a house to avoid apartment neighbor issues, I could've frikken done what you did! I'm only 58 ( next month ) so I think there's time to do this someday.

Here in Canada, we are in a housing crises now, thanks to inflation, greedy landlords and real estate speculators who turn affordable housing into expensive Airbnb. If you can afford to buy a van and live in it you are one of the lucky ones; otherwise you can end up on the hard and dangerous streets in homeless encampments. It is becoming a national disgrace.

I think the cost depends on the conveniences, but conveniences make it much more enjoyable. I would say with higher costs now it is equivalent or just slighpy lesd than renting a room with roommates. With wheels though you can be traveling whereas with a room your traveling will be limited, as it would be an additional cost.

Glad that you've found your niche.
Glad you have found ways to optimize use of every nook and cranny
Glad you have all the essentials for survival eg shelter from the elements, place to Cook, refrigeration, wash, temperature control (of sorts).
Take care of carbon monoxide poisoning from gas heater and stove
Take care of condensation produced from heater and stove. Condensation results in black fungus.
Also, on rainy days cooking indoors is not an option but a necessity, however not only do you run into the problems mentioned above, but the odour from food lingers and is absorbed by fabric ( shhets, curtains etc) especially when frying.
Also judging from other vanlifer videos, they have to contend with mice or insect infestation.
Hope the job situation picks up. so that you can continue to afford expenses like petrol, insurance and food.

I was parroting the term “cheap & easy” because it is used so often. Vanlife has been the most comfortable and easy way to live for me personally. But there can be struggles and stress, those things don’t magically disappear even though we are lead to believe that from some individuals.
I share an awful lot about myself but it’s unlikely that I will share too many details about the financial aspects. Although a lot of information can be gleaned by watching my vlogs.

Paid for it on cash so no bills that I have to worry about. I feel so free and no stress as I live my everyday life. Only bill I have is my phone bill, insurance and gym membership where I go to work out and shower everyday. My monthly spending expenses is usually around $2500, mostly for gas since I do like to travel alot when I'm not at work. My average yearly savings from living in my van is usually around $60,000 a year. I feel alot more free and no stress living in my van than living in an apartment or house

End 2018 I sold my condo and got a Ram Promaster Cargo Van (High Top) that I fixed up as a RV. My goal was to travel to all of the lower 48 states within five years and I checked that box Dec 2023. After I spent the previous winters in south AZ I decided two years ago to leave the van in TX in storage and live in Mexico in Airbnb's for a couple of months. I'm doing the same this year. Will start traveling (in the US) again around May 2024. What I've found is that the Airbnb thing here in Mexico works out cheaper than van travelling. I blame it mostly on my lack of self discipline when I walk into a good store in the US with all that nice food that I just got to have and of course gas . Also having more living space and a hot shower in an Airbnb is very appealing. As a result am I starting to rethink how much longer I want to do the van thing. Ideally I would like to have both. Its nice to have the option though.
