Danny Carey amazes me with the precision, and rhythms, with perfect placement and the perfect weight on each strike, from his wrists, arms, feet, legs, and muscle movements. The crazy thing, that I don't think the reactor realized: He wasn't just doing crazy fills and improvising a solo, and "having a little fun in that part right there."
He's playing the song as it's written. It's THAT complex. It sounds just like this on the album. Every hit it right on time.
He can get it perfect every time. Doesn't need 5 takes. Not only that, but it seems effortless to him.

I don't think he was implying the part was improv, but more that Danny (in regards to the part and its placement in the arrangement), was "having fun" with the motif,
because you really lock in on parts like that, and it's fun. That's what i took from it anyway.
That's the thing with messin with subdivisions, meter, timbre, motifs, polys etc...drummers that do this are awesome because they are not just "playing time".

I’d like to point just a few things out. The reason his hits match the lyrics so well, is their writing process. The music is written out and recorded to perfection before Maynard (the vocalist) comes into the studio to lay down lyrics that he builds as he listens to the music. And second the reason for Danny’s skill that seems rare in metal drummers is that he is a classically trained and educated jazz drummer. He’s taken the most sophisticated drumming techniques and applied them to a different genre of music. Love this reaction video definitely going to subscribe and watch more of your channel.

I am not a drummer- I play flute, but my dad was a professional musician live and studio. I grew up around live music and players of many instruments. The comlexity of Tool is so fascinating to me and Danny is the backbone of all those comlpex changing rhythms. I feel like the guitar and bass become the nerves protruding out of that backbone and Maynard Completes the coplex "feeling" of the songs. Textures and Rythms and Tones, oh my! When I first watched the video of Danny myself, I actually said outloud, "He is not playing drums, he is playing music". The different tones and rhythms become a musical instrument of their own. I had never heard this quote before so it was so COOL to hear that that is exactly what he wants to do and I "got it"!

Danny is very compositional and creates super intricate pieces, but he improvises a lot from night to night with both his fusion bands and with Tool in every song. Even in this live performance, there are plenty of deviations from the script. As the songs age, he tweaks things and creates even further space for improvisation. Tool is one of those rare bands where the lyrics are actually not written until after the instrumental part has been fully fleshed out and compiled. The way I see it, it gives the other band members the ability to use more of their thought processes and can get truly involved with their creation. Maynard has a way of putting words to a song to become a part of the song itself... Not just to sing a song, but his voice is in a way, just one of the instruments. If you listen to not just what he sings, but how he sings it, you'll get it. As far as their drummer Danny Carey? They could not have found a better person for it. It just seems to come naturally to him, and he loves his job. If you are new to listening to Tool, my advice is to just enjoy the journey. They aren't just songs... they are an experience.

I’ve heard someone say, “Maynard is what is needed to complete the music (of Tool).” I couldn’t agree with that statement more. It’s not only a testament to MJK, but a testament to Danny Carey, Adam Jones, and Justin Chancellor. Maynard is a brilliant lyricist and master of tones and only he could grace the sounds that Tool makes and add ANY kind of substance to it (whereas anyone else would subtract). Good stuff.

Not only does he NOT write that way, he composes so that his writings fill the overarching song to the brim with wonder and amazing strike combos and time signatures....but his comps NEVER..ever feel crowded or "crammed in" 💯 Great job reviewing this live version of one of Tools masterpieces. Like, huge.
Me and my friends play this and many other Tool songs for fun, so I'm not hating or disagreeing per se.
I just have to point out, that when he points out the "3 over 4" thing, the drums are not playing polyrhythms or anything complicated.
It follows the guitar and bass; 3,3,3,3,4=16, for the entire riff.
The 2nd to last time, Danny simply places quarter notes triplets over a measure.
He starts on the first beat of that measure and starts the next measure on the first beat.
I'm not saying it doesn't sound amazing.
I'm just saying it's done in music a LOT. And it's not really special, other than the fact Danny is doing it and he is awesome.

There are so many great drummers that have come and gone. John Bonham, Neil Peart, keith moon, lars, vinnie paul, etc, etc. But I'd put Dany Carey at the head of the line. Its just downright incredible. 60 years old and still wailing.

The number of bands that can perform to this level of perfection is an extremely small number. The technical complexity that Tool dishes out is on another planet, and I don’t think there’s another drummer in the world that could fit. Danny is just incredible and it’s awesome to be able to see him this close up!!! 🤘

The funny thing is they won't play wings 1 and 2 live any more because it's too complicated and they don't want to crush Maynard by fucking it up live when it's so emotional for him.
I feel pretty blessed that i saw them perform these back to back in 2007.

Carey's all about perfect timing, syncopation with either the vocalist or one of the guitars......or both. A mix of percussion and electronic drums as he did on the Lateralus tour in 2012 was mind-blowing. One of the best drummers in the rock world easily!

    @atelierbones Před 2 lety +13

I'm of the opinion that Danny's drumming is like a freshly waxed floor. Smooth and Clean. Like you can slide from one spot to another easily.
And it's Clear as Glass. Nothing muddy, dark, or Opaque about it.
The song may be Ominous, Brooding or Melancholy, but the drumming is always Bold and Bright.

I saw the point where you literally just got hypnotized by the playing. That's what TOOL does... Danny Carey can play aggressively but make it feel like he's resting your head on a soft pillow at the same time. The entire band is the result of combining some of the best musicians on the planet and making a band.

  • @laurapechonis9172

Polyrhythmic and the Fibonacci sequence are a huge part of Tool's sound, plus his INSANE times and measures that he is keeping with different hands, feet and overall timing in the performance are kind of in the "off beat" of the song. He is TRULY a Mathematical genius to keep all these different times, measures, and yet perfect for with the bass, guitar, and vocals. He is 100% the best drummer of my generation,up there with John Bonham, Neil pert, etc. No question he is a true genius. And I LOVE that he wears basketball jerseys to most shows, especially since I am from Boston, the Larry Bird #33 jersey with Carey on the back- his own personal MVP jersey! Genius.

I'm a bassist so I listen closely to Justin, I put him in the 10 GOAT.
Maynard is an angry poet who can sing, I like poetry.
Danny is a monster, his sense of time signatures often just leaves me behind. Top 10.
