Alexa, to answer your question, this series was made by HTV (Harlech Television, a Welsh company based part in Wales and in Bristol, England) so, most of it was shot near Bristol in the Forest of Dean, the building used as Nottingham Castle was in fact Bramburgh Castle which is in Northumberland in the North East of England.

One of the things I like best about Robin of Sherwood is that, for all its fantastical sword and sorcery elements, it cleaves closer to historical reality than most versions of the story. The myth of “Good King Richard” is a case in point. Despite long being extolled as the epitome of medieval chivalry, to the point where the Victorians, absurdly, erected a statue of him outside Parliament, the real Richard was a Frenchman who perceived himself as such and had no interest in England beyond the money he could extract from it for his foreign wars. Indeed, in his entire ten years on the throne he only spent two very brief periods in England, and the money that had to be paid for his ransom pushed his subjects to the limit financially. The Richard we see here feels much closer to the real king - a warrior, and a great one, but not someone with any concern for the living conditions of his subjects.
Overall, a fine conclusion to the first series, and an excellent, charismatic portrayal of Richard by John Rhys Davies. The final scenes are a tad melodramatic for my tastes, but as it is the end of series it’s forgivable, and nice to see the outlaws reunited right at the end, ready for further exploits. I also like the fact that Robin proves here to be fallible - he may be Herne’s Son, but he is still just a human being who can have the wool pulled over his eyes. It’s good that the mystical power he is given does not turn him into a superhero.

Young, Ray Winstone and Johnathan Rhys Davies. Both of whom are now big Hollywood names.

Hi Alexa! The only version of Robin Hood to get anywhere near portraying the real King Richard! Far from being this good king, he was arguably one of the WORST Kings of England. He ruled for ten years and only spent eleven months in England itself. The high taxes that other versions blame Prince John and Sheriff of Nottingham for were actually imposed on Richard's orders.

The moment King Richard dissed Wales was the moment he lost me! I have lived for nearly 20 years in England - and love it! But Wales is spectacular and magical.

Well the actor is Welsh really, so am sure he said it with a pinch of salt...

John Rhys Davis was twenty years into his career here, making him 39 - 40 years old at the time. A lot of British shows have short seasons as British TV stations see just do not have to budget to risk on a 26 episode season. The only exceptions to this rule are soaps operas, as they are shown all year round ad are some of the most popular shows and cheap to film.

Many of the woodland scenes were filmed around the Bristol area (Highbury Hill Woods, Stokeleigh Woods and St Mary's Woods) and also around Bradford on Avon where the Tithe Barn doubles at Nottingham Castle in the first season. Looking forward to your review of Season 2 x

Your expression when the reveal came was priceless. I remember something Orson Welles said, it might have been about Micheal Mac Liammor, about theatrical companies having "king actors." They weren't necessarily the best actors, but they had a strong presence that suited them to particular roles. I think John Rhys-Davies fits that bill. Certainly at that time he just added "presence" to anything he appeared in. I had forgotten there were relatively few episodes of this show, although six episode runs seem to have become the norm for UK tv.

So glad that you have enjoyed the first series of this wonderful show Alexa there is so much more to come for you to enjoy. Location filming is always very expensive particularly on a show like this which is all location both interior and exterior at the time of its production (Mid 80s) it was one of the most expensive series ever made in the UK. John Rhys Davis become well known as the recurring character Sallah in the Indiana Jones Movies. I also hope you like Clannads amazing music tracks which compliment the series beautifully.

So enjoying your delight at this lovely series.
Ian Sharp directed the entire first season which set the look for the whole series.
Marion gets more outfits further on in the series. I have my favourite too.

One of my favourite episodes. Great casting, Robin's trust in a Norman King who is no more than that, the reactions of the rest of the merry men, and more Herne. Richard Carpenter really knew what he was doing. I was desperate for the next series when this was broadcast, thankfully the DVD boxsets let me watch it all whenever I want now. Can't recommend them highly enough for the huge amounts of extras and interviews with the entire cast. For a show like this, produced by one of ITV's less wealthy regions - HTV Wales - this was an average series length, but it was well received and got to tell the full story of Robin. Like Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes, this remains my favourite version of the characters.

They rescanned the original film footage and it looks amazing.

Just to briefly digress i have been recently watching some of your reactions to Space 1999 Series 1 & 2 and have really enjoyed them. I wish i had known at the time that you were watching and enjoying this wonderful show rather than finding out after the event as Space 1999 is my all time Favourite Television Series in all genres. My Knowledge of this show is encyclopedic in all aspects based on many viewings and research over many many years and meeting both Cast and Crew Members who worked on it. Had i known about your reaction channel at the time i would have adored sharing information on the show with you and answering any questions you would have had. I love both seasons of the show but have always preferred Series One.

King Richard always seems to be played as the hero (looking at you , Sean Connery!). But, in the Thatcherite era it was completely different. Enjoyable reaction as usual!

Thanks for watching this great series. The thought of another movie you would like is Tuck Everlasting which takes place in the forest for the most part. Please watch (if available) even by yourself if not for the channel. Thanks.
