I notice the term “smorgasbord” on some of these 50s and 60s restaurants. This term preceded the use of “buffet” in the all you can eat restaurants option.

Hats off to all the owners that made a living catering to the public this way. And to all the staff that probably worked for minimum wage.

Reminds me of the road trips my parents took us on... we’d always stop at places like these-that was part of the fun! I love the older style signage and love seeing those cars!😃

Some pictures were taken from the early 70s, I could tell by the vehicles in the parking lots.

I have eaten at two of these restaurants, the Dutch Mill Farm @ 5:23 in Annapolis, Maryland, and the South of the Border restaurant @ 10:23 in Dillon, S.C.
I enjoyed seeing the classic cars as much or more as seeing the old restaurants.
One restaurant chain that I miss is Howard Johnson's, with their classic orange roof.

Great video, ha ha was looking to see if "The Clock" and/or "Pancho's" in El Paso Texas would pop up. Fond memories of eating with the family there when my Dad was stationed in Fort Bliss.

At 9:00 minutes the Keg and Platter, I used to work there as a prep cook, that was 1989. They demolished it a few years later to expand the freeway interchange. Great prim rib and a great salad bar.

I went to Idaho in the 70s to a KFC -ask for some extra crispy. They said we don’t have it yet!!🙀😏We had it in Ga. for three years!!
Tried to buy some baking potatoes 🥔
About the size of a tennis 🎾They said we ship out the big ones!! 🙄😮Ask for grits-didn’t have a clue!!😊😁Pizza Hut looks about the same!! South of the border does too! Some of the signs say: Eat and get gas!!

What we're seeing here are the more independent highway eateries you could easily find every few miles apart on any highway in America. Where did they all go?

I'm certain all of those places were repurposed as other businesses or flat out demolished. 🏚️
