    This is my DIY version of a pulk sled. I will use this for snowshoeing and ice fishing trips.
    Total cost of this build for me was $ 75.00 and It took about 1.5 hours. UPDATE Jan. 2016: Check out this video • Make your own Pulk for another version of attaching poles to the sled. Not my idea or video but it is really good.

    I love two things in life when it comes to DIY projects, cheap and easy. Your ideas here for the building of the Polk sled are perfect! Anyone of virtually any age can do this and it works perfectly! Great job and thank you for sharing this video!

  • @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival

    I like that sled. It looks like it will stand up to some hard use. I like your "tool" belt also. My belt work okay but that looks like it would work great. My first Gen pulk sled had too sloppy of connections and so I redid it to eliminate every bit of slop possible and it works MUCH better now with the second generation. It is the second one that I video'd

      +Far North Bushcraft And Survival Thanks for watching. I think if we built one with my belt and your pole connections it would be an awesome sled. I think I will have to fix up my pole connections like yours......Take care, Bluefin.

    Thanks and this is exactly what I was looking for. I am a little confused what the purpose of all the connectors are used for and if I was to guess they may be to add some way to secure the load but not sure. Thanks for making the video.

    • @mustang774
      @mustang774  Před rokem

      I'm glad this may have helped you. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment and ask a question. Sorry for the late reply. Yes the carabiners along the edges are to secure the load. If you have bags you can clip them to these or run a rope across the sled several times through these carabiners. Some people use a thick bungee cord through them also. Basically they are for securing the load whatever method you may want to use....Take care, Bluefin.

    some good ideas but I noticed you didn't "clean" (round off) the holes or the ends of PVC tubes (or did you?????). I was wondering if your rope frayed after prolonged use........cheers.

    • @mustang774
      @mustang774  Před 8 lety

      +ZEROmg Very observant. You are correct, I did not "clean" or (round off) the holes or the ends of the PVC tubes. They are really not that sharp and with as many loops as I have, there is not much pressure on each individual hole or rope going through it. If it was a concern, I guess you could use a rubber grommet or try to make the holes smoother. I have only used this a few times. Most of last winter I was away for work. I will tighten the ropes going through the PVC as Dan Lacroix had suggested in earlier comments. I am quite happy how this build turned out. It will suit my needs for snowshoeing trips and the occasional ice fishing trip. Thanks for taking the time to watch, comment and ask questions about the build. We can learn much more with such comments and questions....Take care. Bluefin.

    Hey Finnie, did you figure out a waterproof cover to put over the top of this 45 pelican?. just in case it starts to rain or if you are got lost or caught or lost overnight and rain started to fall?... just wondering of your ideas. ty for post

    • @mustang774
      @mustang774  Před 9 lety

      battlehrfred I don't have a waterproof cover for the sled yet. I do have a waterproof bag that I can use the next time I take it out. I also have a small tarp I could wrap the gear in. I always take a shelter so I can get out of the weather or stay overnight in an emergency. It fits in my pack or the cargo pocket of my pants. I'm always prepared to stay overnight.

    • @mustang774
      @mustang774  Před 4 lety

      Sorry for the very late reply. I missed this comment. I'm not sure what length would work for you with skis. I would suggest buying two of the 10 foot long pipes and then trim down through trial and error with your skis.......Take care, Bluefin.

    Nice. I'm working on one using plywood and vinyl flooring. Most DIY pulk designs have the pvc in an X configuration...it seems simpler to just run them parallel. Left pvc to left hip, right pvc to right hip. Any thoughts?

    • @mustang774
      @mustang774  Před 9 lety

      Hi, your design sounds interesting. Most of the DIY pulks I have seen online have crossed poles. I'm really not sure why. The next time we get snow I will try pulling it without the poles crossed to see if there is a difference. I just followed most designs out there and used crossed poles. If anyone knows why the poles are usually crossed, I would love to know why. Thanks.

    • @jpturcotte
      @jpturcotte Před 6 lety +2

      mustang774 The poles are crossed because it's easier to steer the sled that way.

    • @sporto100
      @sporto100 Před 6 lety

      Cross the poles and the sled tracks better particularly when skiiing at faster speeds. According to other pulkers .

  • @mountainbushcraftersallian8654

    what kind of weight do you pull and how far? I'm doing winter pulk and I"ll need a lot of gear so, I just wanted to get an idea....

    • @mustang774
      @mustang774  Před 8 lety

      I have not used this as often as I would have liked to. I probably only had 20 pounds in it. So far I have only used it on short day trips. It will pull much more weight than you could put on your back. There are quite a few people that use pulks and have posted videos about several days worth of gear in them. Maybe you could ask them. I have a few links here .They may be of more help. • @DanLacroix
    @DanLacroix Před 10 lety +1

    nice! Quick tips: make the ropes in the tubes as tight as you can. You won't notice how every millimeter of loose rope is bad until you go down a hill with it. Also, adding some fins at the back will prevent the pulk from going sideways when you walk on uneven terrain. Haven't done this myself, maybe next year.
    Built my pulk after watching ***** , he "advertised" fiberglass poles on www skipulk com, they look nice!

    • @mustang774
      @mustang774  Před 10 lety

      Hey Dan, thanks for the tips. I will tighten the ropes some more. On the test run I noticed there was a lot of play in the rope. I think I will add a skeg or fin to the sled for next winter. I looked at those skipulk com poles, very nice but expensive. Check out gcstorm1's channel to see his pulk poles. He commented a few posts above.....Take care, Bluefin.

    what do you think about the 5' poles as compared to 6' poles?

    • @mustang774
      @mustang774  Před 9 lety

      I was skeptical about a 5' pole at first but I could not get a 12' or two 6' poles, so I bought a 10' pole and cut it in half. It works just fine for me even with snowshoes. I don't think it would make much difference if they were 1' longer. Thanks for watching.

    • @bonna250
      @bonna250 Před 9 lety

      do you know anyone who is using 5' poles with skiing? with 5' angled, and 3' from the ground, that gives you 4' of distance between your feet and the pulk.
      thanks

    • @mustang774
      @mustang774  Před 9 lety

      Bonna Wieler You are welcome.

    • @mustang774
      @mustang774  Před 9 lety

      Bonna Wieler I don't know anyone in my area that uses a pulk. I have only seen them online in videos. The conduit pipe I used comes in 10 foot sections. You can always start with that size and trim them down a little at a time and then just adjust the ropes and knots.
